There isn't any paint on it, just some clear coat that comes off when you work on it. Like I said, it needs some metal removed to give it some real bite. Here's a good article. http://oldjimbo.com/survival/vaughangrind.html
Harbor freight el cheapo angle grinders are the bomb. I've got five of them with different wheels and grits. Saves time..lol.
