Alright people. Since this seems to be the biggest mystery of the year, let's go ahead and answer this question one more time. (Yes, one more time, because believe it or not we have answered it several times already.)
The old man (Tradewater) is from Barlow. One night, Guyon stated the whole "For Sparta!" thing, and the old man changed it and said "For Barlow!" After that point, that was it. It was a catchy line, and goofy as heck because Barlow Kentucky is, well, really, really tiny. The population doubled when the old man moved there.
Then, one day in chat, Maethor asked what Barlow was. The old man (Tradewater) stated it was "A warrior city. Like Sparta."
And that is it. That is the entire story behind the mystery. And believe it or not, this has been covered, in depth, several times, to several people, and explained about as thoroughly as possible. If you missed it, sorry, but that is the nature of the beast. People are going to miss stuff on the internet. We have a group of people that post quite regularly, so threads are constantly in flux around here. If it gets lost in the shuffle, again, sorry, but I can't help that. If people didn't post so often in here, it wouldn't be as great as it is. We keep saying the For Barlow! thing because it is fun and goofy and not as played out as the For Sparta! thing, so if it seems like high school antics, maybe it is, but it is all in good fun, and if you decided to check your sense of whimsy and humor at the door, well, I suggest you go back and get it.
As far as not bringing chat stuff here, well, there are a huge number of some of the most successful threads that got their start in chat. There are a huge number of giveaways that happened because they were suggested in chat. There was far too much good content that started there that made it's way over here. So if you are really intent on us keeping the chat stuff out of here, sorry, it isn't going to happen. We have too much fun and far too many good ideas to simply ignore them here.
soooooooo whats this barlow thing again? and why is no one in chat? ive got some venting to do
Hi guys,
I was just stopping by to snark and say sorry I haven't been on much.
For barlow n stuff!
anything exciting been happening? I gotta pay attention more jeez the internet moves fast.
Ka Bar got a new subforum, the BK5 won an award, clich made some awesome rosewood handles, moose passed out from heat exhaustion, some old guy threatened Moose at the spirit of steel show, murph won a sweet patch in my contest, clich's contest will be over on friday, there is a contest for a BK77: post hiking with a becker pics - ends monday, it was Ethan's birthday, and we aren't allowed to speak of Barlow anymore, kinda like Tortuga the pirate city... or Atlantis.
Those are the highlights, i missed alot, but those are what caught my eye.
Damn. Nice recap.
Moose
That was awesome. Makes us sound so productive!

I wanted to clarify a few things, because I now realize that might not have been understood as to what I meant.
When I said high school antics I wasn't talking about the act of posting "For Barlow!". Instead I meant that having inside jokes to alienate others was a high school antic. The Barlow thing was all in good fun.
The "what happens in chat should stay in chat" was directed at inside jokes and not any content or ideas that come.
I imagine new people would be turned off of this subforum if inside jokes continue to flow. That is really against the point of this subforum or any subforum. Also I think things that distance us from the rest of BFC will get us the wrong kind of attention.(like ESEE)
I never took offense to any of the things that I posted on, and I also did not mean to offend. However, I wanted to post my thoughts on the matter since it was brought up and I felt like I had a point.
slapper
I agree with ya slap, the whole cliche thing doesn't do well with me.
