Saltwater will put a nice green corrosion on most brass in pretty short order. Most stainless steel will corrode eventually as well.
If you're going to the beach or fishing in the salt, pick up a Spyderco H1 blade. That stuff is freakin' amazing around saltwater.

might i suggest:

CRKT "MUK", entry in the "elliptical knife" category, $11.50 shipped, grab several. wish they made them with orange, red, or toxic handles, but good enough.

check out youtube for Vielle himself beheading trout with ease with these things.
