New Buck Mesa, wow!

That's a good looking knife. I may have to get one. But I still think of the ones you mentioned that the Gerber Strongarm is the better value of the three due to it's much more customizable sheath. It also comes in plain edge and they sell them at close to the same price range at Walmart.

I will still end up getting the strongarm, but I really like the look and feel of these new Buck fixed blades. I have the Reaper as well and love it, and will probably pick up an Intrepid. You can actually remove the belt loop from the sheath and rig up a horizontal carry with some paracord with the Mesa. Carried it today and I love the feel of the Micarta handles, and really dig the slightly recurved blade. For $45 you cant go wrong.

It fits my nice leather 104 sheath perfectly, but I don't see one on the Buck website yet. It probably fits the 622 Endeavor heavy duty nylon sheath too, which is available on the Buck website. Just some other options.

You know I'm not a fan of the recurve either, and passed on most of Bucks new knives for this reason. I swap the Mesa in Walmart and the very slight recurve didn't bother me, so I picked one up, and really enjoy it. But I did experience the razor Sharpe blade first hand. I cut my thumb top off playing with the Mesa and a fero rod. They're Sharp ...

I just picked one up at my local Wally. As mentioned $44 and change plus tax. It appears rather minimal to me, the sheath especially. It outa be a dandy "truck" knife or one to carry everyday in the woods. The sucker is sharp right out of the box, shaved hair off my arm with it.

The tension adjustment of the sheath could be a problem if you loosen it up to make for an easier drawing of the knife the nut, screw and spacer could loosen to the point of falling out. I personally find the tension a little stiff when tightened to the point of not working its way loose.

Buck seems to have set aside the beauty they were famous for in the past in favor of a good, solid, usable knife. I like it

Just for perspective of relative size.

From top to bottom; 620 Reaper, 632 Mesa, Stock 104 Compadre Camp knife, and a modded 104 Camp knife.

The more I look at that Mesa, the more I want one. :p Problem is, my Walmart around here will probably never get one. With Meijer coming to town, maybe they will start improving their selection.

Bear, good to see you. I would take the factory 104 over the modified 104. Some prefer Levis others Wrangler. DM

They should make that modded 104 above a production knife!!!!!!!

Thanks guys for the input and comments on my modded 104. The modded 104 does very well at its intended purpose, which is to used as a woodcraft knife. Some like my mods, some don't, no worries.

Interestingly enough I was planning on modding my Reaper to something along the lines of the new Mesa knife. But now that the Mesa knife is out I will pass on modding the Reaper.

As far as the Mesa is concerned, I'll list my likes and dislikes.

Likes:
1/8" think spine
comfortable micarta handle
good balance
light weight

Dislikes:
prefer more of a rounded drop point
don't care for the slight recurve to the blade
don't care for the over extended finger guard
not sure what they were thinking with the bizarre shaped pommel

Overall I think Buck has a winner with the Mesa.

As I play with mine I see the extended finger guard is what lock to hold it firmly in the sheath grabs hold of.

Thanks, I kinda like the classic design of the 104, but if I bought one that red color would have to go! :)

Yes, there is room here. I can see that. But it serves as a protective coating and loss prevention. For my tastes I would take the top down, removing the thumb ramp. Leave the belly and point like a trailing point, more straight. A Loveless style drop point drops down too much and you lose belly. No divot at the choil. Take the hollow grind higher creating a full hollow grind. (Probably not what they were shooting for. And I prefer a stainless. The 104 has some good features that could make it work. DM

I'm super excited to see this knife! I'm glad Buck finally made a plain edge endeavor, it's a great design. Thanks Buck, I'll be getting one!

Darn! Seems like every time I visit this forum, it ends up costing me money. :D
I definitely NEED to add this one to the collection!;)

My local store got one in today, it's for their display, so they wouldn't sell it to me, but they did let me handle it. Gonna make an awesome field knife, very light and the handles are well done.

I'll be checking for when they get them in.

I kind of like this sheath. If you want, you can remove the belt loop all together. And you can disengage the sheath from the knife with a push of your thumb. Might be a good grab and go knife for protection.

Thanks for causing me to look for that feature. I thought I disliked the sheath because of the hard tug to disengage. As a matter of fact I dug out an old cheap nylon one I had laying around and was using it.

Just wait until you guys see the update to the Reaper...

I hope it looks something like this
