New Buck Mesa, wow!

Found 2 local and 11 - 100 miles away.
Picking mine up tomorrow. I don't mind picking some up but 100 miles away would add like 10 bucks or something plus shipping. I'm not sure what retail price is on them.

I believe mine was about $45.

What's the enthusiasm with this knife? Is it the plain edge?

Anyone actually had one out for an extended workout yet?

Thanks

For anyone who has tinked with it — Are the scales removable? The images show what looks like a Torx screw holding the scales on.

got one. thanks to the generousity of st8yd. pleasure meeting you Sir and thank you for helping me.

its gonna be a good user for me, but i have noticed last couple bucks ive gotten...... sharpening folks keep knocking the point off.

got a black reaper recently same issue. easy fix though. hope there isnt a trend going on of buck points knocked off during sharpening.

The Walmart in Cape Girardeau, Mo got two in along with some other new knives. My son bought one and I'm really impressed. I'll get one as well eventually. I hope Buck sells a lot of them ( I think they will)

Hey Redhat, for me the enthusiasm about the Mesa for me is that it's basically a Sentry or an Endeavor with a plain edge, nice micarta scales and a very cool sheath. Bee, the scales are removable. I haven't really had mine long enough to give it a real workout, but you know what to expect with a Buck.

Anytime JB, glad to help. Ya I noticed the point knocked back a little on mine as well but also it appears worse than it is I think do in part to the spine being beveled as it is and it not being a clip point. But like you said easy fix.

I used mine this weekend to skin a Buck I shot on Sat. morn. and it did fine. For that chore I do prefer my bucklite max guthook or my 113, along with a boning knife.

^never did ask ya.....how many points?

so ive played with it today. the sheath is interesting. has a screw system for retention and its ambi by switching the belt loop and screwing it in on either side. pretty good idear. the loop itself is harder plastic. might loosen up but i found it too narrow to fit my standard and thicker than a Walmart type belt.....gun belt...had to force it on. so will scrape up a nicer leather finish. also being narrow made it carry weird with the handle end jamming into my side a bit. sitting worked okay as i have a 1.5" and the loop is setup for 1.75", maybe bigger...didnt measure it...just guessing. so it can turn. i prefer the nylon style sheath or leather to this one for carry and comfort.

knife wise thinking its got some sort of titanium like coating on it? anyone know for sure? might be the finish but sure looks like a coating of some kind. mine has flush and well fitting micarta scales. all in all a good knife for the money. an inch or inch and a half longer blade and flat ground and leather sheath and it would be perfect.

The handle scales on my Mesa were loose and after fighting with them for a couple of days, trying not to mess up the screws, I finally got out a 90' Torx T10 driver and got the screws out, took some pictures, then put them back in, and secured my scales. Here are some pictures for your pleasure...

Also, I purchased a Buck 104 Compadre sheath from an auction site that had a broken rivet on the belt loop. After replacing the rivet with a snap button, I like the option to easily remove the knife and I feel like it's plenty secure for my needs.

All in all, I really like this knife. The leather sheath fits like a glove and adds the one thing the knife really was missing with the plastic sheath.

Is this model just aviable at Walmart? I went on the buck site and only saw the endeavor. I would prefer this the Mesa over the endeavor. I don't like the serrated feature in the endeavor

It is a Wal-Mart exclusive. I bought one as soon as I saw it and love it so far. I am not completely sold on the sheath but at least it is ambidexrous. I am VERY happy with the knife though and plan on buying at least one more as a back-up.

This knife interests me as it's clear the scales are removable. I might get one of them just to experiment with different materials (wood, mainly) for scales.

So I haven't logged into blade forums for at least a month but this morning I did and what did I see but this thread about a knife I had never heard about. I hurried myself down to the local Wal Mart and sure enough they had two so $49.00 later I owned one. It does seem like a nice knife but maybe I was happier not knowing. :)

Hopefully this will be a very successful knife for Buck and they will expand the line. I would love to see a version of the Mesa with a blade about 7 inches long.

So, looking at Winky's photos the handles on the Mesa aren't glued, only held in place by screws. And it looks like one could easily create a lanyard hole from one of the 2 holes in the tang. The 632 is a U.S. made model. DM

If you want to see what it looks like with Rosewood scales I will try to post a pic. The scales are interchangeable with the Buck 620 Reaper that Wal-Mart sells with Rosewood scales. (I believe the Rosewood handled Reaper is also Wal-Mart exclusive) It looked pretty classy and made the Reaper more "Tactical" looking. I may buy another Mesa just to permanently swap the scales.

Nice pic southpaw. I think I like this way better. emw479 mentioned a new Reaper with gray/nonblack blade coming. Wonder what the scales will be...
