Wow, great kits everyone!
This is my home survival kit which I sometimes take on long car trips. I usually stow my RC-3 in the hidden pocket right above the Maratac Emblem.

I plan to buy some 550 Paracord, but the cord pictured below is 220lb test cord from my local outdoors store. I couldn't figure out a way to store it, so I wrapped it around the radio box.

Finally found my RC-3 and strapped it to the Pygmy Falcon II I picked up for hunting and hiking last week. It's something of a survival kit, going to take a couple pictures and post them here over Thanksgiving.

OK, here is my entry. I use this one for dayhiking and when space is limited. Its mostly been carried in a cargo pocket on my pants or thrown in a daypack with a jacket, water and snacks.

This kit was put together the other day when I recieved this bag in a trade with no idea of what I was going to do with it.

This part of the kit is easy, its an Adventure Medical PSK.

This is a heavy duty bag with some meds(tylenol, advil, sudafed, pepto), water tablets, gauze, bandaids, alcohol pads, lighter, tweezers and MSR towel.

Thanks, its not nearly extensive as most but I meant for this to be small enough to fit in a cargo pocket. I carry a nalgene bottle everywhere and I tend to carry snacks as well (thats why I left them out).

It is interesting to see everyone's definition of a survival kit. This is the survival kit I carry in my truck during the winter, it is for the most part a "get home bag", where we do have ice storms or monster snows and I have been stranded away from home before. The RC-4 is of course the most important part :)

I built the kit out according to rule of 3's (fire/shelter, water, food and everything else). A Camelbak HAWG Max Gear Hydration pack carries everything in the back of the Xterra. This is the military version of the commercial HAWG. It has 1100 cu. in. and a 3 liter hydration bladder. I have attached my knife (RAT RC-4) and multi-tool (leatherman surge) to the one side and my trauma first aid kit (FAK) to the other side.

Fire:

You need redundancy for starting a fire... I have had great luck with using the Delta butane lighter when camping. It has a cover which prevents the thumb release from getting pressed and it is also waterproof. The clear butane window on the side lets you see how much fluid you have left. I also am a big fan of Swedish fire steel. Nothing to break, they are my backup. I keep some Vaseline cotton balls in a waterproof match case as a fire starter, you can also squirt some hand sanitizer or use an antibacterial wipe as well.

* fire starter - cotton balls coated with Vaseline in waterproof match case
* Windmill windproof Delta lighter (waterproof closure also)
* Swedish firesteel
* Pelican 1040 case (waterproof)
* 24 hour reusable emergency candle (puts off a fair amount of heat in an enclosed space)

Water

I use a 0.75 liter Camelbak bottle coupled with a 3L hydration bladder in my Camelbak to carry water. I have a Katadyn Hiker Pro (have used for 2 years without problems) if I need to filter more water. I also carry Micropur (for 10L of water) and potable aqua just to use in any are where septic systems might contaminate the water with viruses. I can also boil water with my campstove below if need be.

3025651904_7863bd2940.jpg

Shelter

The foil emergency blankets and bivy shelters are too flimsy to be of use in my opinion in the winter. I use a sportsman space blanket that I found at Cabelas years ago. It is olive drab on one side and heat reflective foil on the other and is like a medium thickness tarp in weight (4.5 x 7 '). I carry 100' of paracord, tent stakes and 2 bungee cords to put up the space blanket as a bivy tent. Not pictured is a wool blanket also used as well as a sleeping bag that is in the back of the truck. A polypro hat, extra gloves, change of socks are also in the bag. In the truck is a rain jacket that fits over my winter coat and a shemagh serves as a scarf. $10 quarters (for vending if possible) and $20 in singles is also in the bag.

Food/Hygiene

Since you can technically go 3 weeks without food I have minimal food for my GHB. If I am traveling in the cold, I want food for energy so I carry 6 cliff bars, 6 packets of hot chocolate and 1 mountain house meal. Separate bags for hand hygiene and camp wipes.

3025654752_2ef00377db.jpg

I also carry a MSR wisperlite international that has served me well for 5 years. Burns any kind of fuel, but I carry white gas.

3025658078_54c289ddec.jpg

Tools

I have 2 flashlights (with extra batteries), multitool (surge) with additional bits and a fixed blade knife (RAT Cutlery RC-4). Not pictured is my suunto m2 compass in addition to my compass watch. Also is a snatch strap for getting me or others out of snow and a gerber folding shovel for same. Both of which I have used in the past year.

This is my American Express kit- Don't leave home without it!

Contains:

1 Izula prototype
3 tinderquick tabs
3 butterfly sutures
1 iodine pad
2 fish hooks with leader- these are in the little cardboard square wrapped in duct tape.
1 foot duct tape- repairs, fire starting, wound closure, etc
1 small zip lock bag- water carrying, food gathering, etc
2 square feet aluminum foil- to make a pot for boiling water
1 magnesium fire starter
2 split rings- for snares, etc
5 feet 550 paracord- shelter building, fishing, snares, 101 uses
2 saftey pins- repairs, etc
$80 in cash (4 20's)- backsheesh, etc. Not pictured

My girlfriend gave me some good ideas for this kit, she is a beginning outdoors person.

I wanted to make a kit as small as possible, yet still have the essentials.

I have a good one in the works...after the holiday season I'll have a lot more of the gear I need for it. Items shown in { } are things I need to acquire.

The things I currently carry daily for both urban and woods survival (more of a "get me home" bag in case of accidents or getting lost, or what have you) are as follows:

Sharpening/deburring:
-one each of coarse/fine/extra fine DMT credit cards
-drag-through carbide sharpener for rapid profiling
-a half each of a medium and fine Sharpmaker stone in the tube that one of them came in
-A garden file

Hydration/cooking:
-{Guyot waterbottle and Glacier cup} coming. It's a standard nalgene right now.
-Cold Steel K4 necker (sheath is a plus)
-Small 6"x4" epicurean cutting board
-{aquamira filter}

First Aid:
-Roll Gauze
-Ace Bandage
-Band-aids in plastic protecter/dispenser
-Medical tape
-Ibuprofen
-{Mylar blanket} grabbing one from work in the next few days
-Chap-stick
-Thick-knit beanie cap

Fire-Starting:
-Two LMF ferrocerium rods (one with green handle for play/experimentation, one with red handle in mint condition for emergencies)
-Film canister of PJCBs
-{stainless CountyComm peanut lighter} coming in time for the holidays
-Standard Zippo

Knives:
-RC-3 on backpack strap. Spare sheath for belt/iwb carry
-Opinel No.8 au carbon (doubles as fire striker/food prep)
-Boker Wharcom
-Buck X-tract (soon to be replaced by {Victorinox Spirit}
-Benchmade 530/Case swayback (EDCs, so technically in my pockets at all times)
-Cold Steel Barong machete (in car at all times. I take a Condor billhook when packing heavy. Both are considered as possibles)
-Cold Steel Bushman/Pocket Bushman (on my hip whenever I'm in the woods or backyard)

Tools:
-{Trailblazer take-down saw} again, xmass brings one of these.
-Gerber/Fiskars Axe, full size (possible)
-Jiggler key set (Locked out? No problem!)
-Foliage green paracord
-Black paracord
-{Orange paracord}
-{CountyComm pocket hacksaw} coming
-{CountyComm folding razor} coming
-{CountyComm versadriver} coming
-{CountyComm widgy prybar} coming
-{P38 can opener} coming
-Mil-tac pen with fisher adapter
-{write-in-the-rain pad}
-Brunton compass
-Bushnell LED light with strobe and s.o.s. modes
-needle set with outdoor heavy-duty thread
-Benchmade Blue Box torx kit
-Benchmade Houdini on keychain (belt cutter, glass breaker, whistle, light)

...and I think that's it for now?
All of this is carried in a pimped-out Maxpedition Malaga Gearlsinger with waterbottle holder (bottle, cup, first-aid, fire), sheath pouch (for the opinel), medium rolly-polly bag (extra carrying ability) and Small Tac-tile pouch attached. The main and sub pockets hold all of the other stuff splendidly. All of the sharpening gear, for instance, fits in the top outermost pouch, and I can fit my sharpmaker in there if needed. I also carry a separate padded food bag inside the main compartment with some food bars and stuff. About half the time anyone needs something fixed up I have the tools to accomplish it in some manner or another. I'll post pics of the complete kit after the holiday season once my last gear comes in, but will put up pics of my current kit later today. I was easy to shop for this year. :D

Bear in mind this does not include much of the very important kit that will be in this before the months end, and there is plenty of room to accommodate it all and then some. Also, I didn't take pics of a few odds and ends but I figured I wouldn't overdo it. Obviously the first-aid needs a little bulking up, but I actually have to replace a lot of missing items since they got used up! Thoughts?

I'm impressed with the participation. We'll try to get the voting going soon.
