New CPM Steel: Magnamax?

I see Bradford Knives is offering a model in a new steel from Larrin that they are calling MagnaTuff (it looks, however, to be higher wear resistance rather than toughness).

Sorry if this has been discussed before, but I did a search and couldn’t find anything on it.

Larrin, could you tell us a bit more about this steel’s properties? Really glad to see you bringing more steels to the table, as Magnacut has quickly become one of my favorites.

Just saw this video, tho his testing methods are bit dubious with handheld equipment
I watched this the other day. The hardness testing is iffy, but he was spot on about a lot of other things. That burr was horrendous. I don't get how that made it out the door.

Maybe I don't fully understand hardness testing, but curious what he was doing that seems "iffy"? I've watched loads of his videos, and he continues to add things to the hardness testing portion, to try and remove doubt, so I'm just curious why this information shouldn't be trusted?

Leeb impact testing is not measuring the same thing as Rockwell hardness.

Got it, didn't realize there was a large difference. I guess one piece that is in his videos, is consistency, even if it's not "official" hardness testing, this new one is softer than the other blade he showed in the video, so the claim of it being harder, does seem to be false.

I find his rant against Larrin and Crucible bit unwarranted since they are not overseeing Bradford production, but if Bradford did lowball their HT significantly it should be clarified even if this is a prototype

I have no interest in watching his video(s), but your comment seems apropos to me. Unfortunately, those who do not know better, nor understand the processes involved, may be swayed by misinformation. Folks should be careful whom they take their information from.

Unfortunately there are already people in the comments blame Dr Larrin and CPM for the problem, even invoke the whole Survive! Drama

Some of the commenters on that (and other videos) are proof that there are some customers you do not want.

The video maker tried to throw Dr. Thomas under the bus by stating he had no interest in this knife. Of course not, since the knife steel is NOT ready for production, the heat treat was worked up by someone other than Dr. Thomas, and the knife is made by Bradford. Why would the Dr. wade into that morass? Not his monkeys, not his circus.

Blues comment says it:

As they say, "you can't fix stupid", but the ignorant always have the opportunity to learn. However, that's up to them. It's easier to just join a crowd rather than put in the effort and think for oneself.

Which is why I asked the question, seems folks are trying to shame me for asking a question..

I wouldn't know anything about that. (I've not followed all the comments in the thread.)

But it's never a bad thing, in my opinion, to seek answers to legitimately asked questions which are not veiled attempts to undermine someone or something.

(If Larrin Larrin didn't ask questions, he'd not have attained the knowledge he has. If DeadboxHero DeadboxHero didn't ask questions, he'd never have attained the respect and following he's earned as a maker. And so it goes for all of those who have moved the needle in this avocation of ours.)
