well i dont see any direct claims that the knife is his design. it is a bit dishonest though, especially when the kit is so cheap

Maybe he is buying kits - but the file work, engraving, fitting, polish, and name etch aren't coming from the kit maker.

Lots of knifemakers buy parts out. Not that many machine their own screws, or harvest their own pearl or mammoth. It's all commodities. You can contract a blade to your specs and never even touch it until after it's shipped from the heat treater. Some big name makers do exactly that. No one complains.

Considering the labor and materials, they seem a fair value. He's just a bit more obvious to a knowledgeable knife enthusiast - I bet his customers are quite happy.

But he was featured in Coltelli magazine :o

To his credit, the workmanship looks pretty good on the scales he's fitted, but the fact that so many of them use AUS 8 certainly raises a suspicion that he's buying kits. Who uses AUS8 for custom knives if they have their own heat treating furnace? Most knife maker suppliers don't even carry AUS8 bar stock.

I didn't see a kit for the subhilt fighter on the Knifekits site.

I am sorry. But thats just wrong in my book! Many makers buy certain material of a knife true. But they do not buy a knife kit put it all together and resell it. That is not how you make a name for yourself as an honourable man and a cutler.

i thought i saw info on his site saying everything he made was with his own equipment. maybe i was wrong...

Thank you very much for that link!!
For some time I was wondering if those inexpensive 440c blades that one can find on ebay are usefull, and can make a good knife.

R.Webber shows that they are nice blades to make a good knife.
I'm ordering subhilt and edc fighter blade from ebay right now.

So, on the AO knife you are paying ~$96 for filework. The signature dagger folder is also a kit, but I gotta say, his filework, engraving and scale fitting look pretty damned awesome. I'm not sure I'd pay $110 for 440a in a knife though. Interesting.

You want to disscuss something why dont you stand up and ask the man.... you found my web site. www.rweberknives.com

wow man, good job. Yeah you didn't outright say that you made everything, but calling yourself a custom maker is a joke. When people hear "custom knives" they are going to think a knife that is made by that person, so your website is misleading.

And your comment about the top custom amkers just cashing checks and approving shipping, I suggest you check yourself, the makers who post on this site are by and far top notch guys, who actually make thier knives. There are some here who are Master Smiths, Journeyman Smiths, and working toward both of those. There are others who are simply extremely gifted at what they do.

And I really hope your claims about your service are real, too many loud mouths are all talk

I smell a skunk, years of smelling, you can't always see a skunk but you can smell one.

The youtube video is down.

It looks like another "knife maker" who doesn't even grind his own blades. I call that a "knife assembler" not a "knife maker."

I bought a knife once, took the slabs off, and wrapped the handle with paracord. I guess that makes me a custom knife maker according to some.

Everyone has opinions, ive used blanks,i grind blades aswell,i lable them custom or i lable them handmade,a person has to put forth effort either way to make the knife complete, from, handles to filework, blade jeweling, ect, that takes alot of skill,it is done by that maker <or person> it is custom, regardless, they did that to the knife or object they did it too, just for "example" puposes only, take into consideration, david & brian yellowhorse, painted pony, brian whilhoyt, all of those names are listed custom knife makers, who made them famous? Case xx,buck knives, ect,i think it all comes down to the way it is worded.
Custom knife - customized in diffrent ways,by diffrent people
handmade knife - sole authership,owner creator,maker,customizer
in my eyes a person buys what he or she likes, and if they wanted a true handmade knife first priority they would do is ask before they buy it,this is just my thoughts on this situation, like i said before everyone has there own opinions, this is just mine.

There are, in my humble opinion, two things a knife maker needs to do, to be 'ethical'.
Be up front in your advertising, about your material, methods, and the extent to which you 'make' the knives you sell.
Second, answer any questions by customers honestly.

Other than that, how an individual 'makes' his knives is his own business.
