New here--At 75 do I still need to carry a knife?

Hope posting in a 2-month-old thread isn’t considered necroposting … and if it is, I’ll probably forget before I’m done here anyway.

64 years old here, no idea where all those years went, but most days I feel every minute of it. Suffer from chronic CRS (all you other old farts will know exactly what that is, unless you’ve forgotten that, too). Some days I still feel like a kid, like when I’m here looking at all these beautiful pieces that you guys use and collect. I’ve carried a SAK with me regularly for as much if the last 40 years that I can remember, not because Ive needed to as a mostly career desk jockey, but just in case, like any other career desk jockey who carries a trusty SAK. That is, right up until this godforsaken plague hit, which has had me working from home since March ‘02 and most likely until I’m ready to call it quits for good. Not that that’s a bad thing - not dealing with RI traffic daily has done wonders for my blood pressure, but I digest. SAK’s are all I’ve had since my cub scouts days in the 60’s, save for an Estwing fixed blade I received as a gift a lot of years ago that has sat far more than it was ever used.

For whatever reason, I recently decided I wanted a decent quality EDC (which I didn’t even know it was called an EDC until I started looking for what I wanted). So I started researching brands, styles, blade materials, and of course prices. The search gradually narrowed down to some kind of assisted open, 3-ish inch blade, and a good steel that would hold an edge better than my lSAK but not be too difficult to sharpen. I finally settled on a Kershaw Blur S30V, based on its unassuming looks and all positive reviews, and placed my order earlier this week. A little more than I was looking to spend on my first me knife, but totally worth it. Shortly after ordering, I found this forum, and then yesterday my newest obsession arrived, and now I’m hooked. I’ll have this knife with me everywhere around the house, and also a lighter, cheaper, more legaler-to-carry Oso Sweet when I’m out and about (3” limit in RI - don’t want to chance soiling my squeaky clean record at this point in my life). The old SAK will probably still stay with me, just because I won’t always need that big honking recurve, but in a matter of a few days I’ve gone from an old fart with a couple of SAK’s in the drawer to one of you knife guys. Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.

Always have a SAK on you (Tinker is best). Have carried an Oso-Sweet for several years - great knife.

I’m still a kid to some of you but at 57 I carry more knife now then I ever have. From 10-50 I carried a Buck Stockman -303 or 301- everyday. I caught a bug at 50 and the edc knife has gone from twitch 2 to a CQC7 to a mini sere to a long series of Sebenza. I carried a Mnandi for a couple of years thinking I was back to my senses but now an Umnumzaan. If I continue at this rate I’ll be sporting a K18 by the time 75!

Once again I’m bitten by Enabling Central. You got me perusing the sellers for OTF’s with a 3” or less blade.
Don't know if you saw, but these are my 2" OTFs. First two by Microtech and the third (on the right) is an H&K Hogue. All are great but the mini-Troodon in the middle is really snappy. Okay, I can't find the photo but here it is on my Instagram. I hope this is legal. https://www.instagram.com/p/Cd828Y-pGWo/

72 yrs old here and I now prefer OTF autos. And I now own more knives than ever.
This is what you’ve done. Order was just placed (it’s an Atomic Defender Mini). Why? Because it looks really nice, it gets good reviews, I’m a sucker for a recurve and maybe a little not too bright, and I don’t want to spend the kind of time in the doghouse that the cost of a good one would have earned me. When the wife demands to know what I need another knife for when I just bought a nice one a few days ago, I’ll have no choice but to tell her I was assimilated. She won’t understand, so then I’ll give her the whole resistance is futile speech as I point to the gazillion containers of yarn she’s collected. Difference there being she actually makes stuff with her obsession, while I just cut stuff up with mine. She still won’t get it, so I’ll just go into my dementia routine and she’ll eventually walk away muttering something under her breath.

Unfortunately it won’t let me see them cos I don’t have an instagram account. :(

I can't see the IG link either, for the same reason.

Danny, I hear you on the yarn (and quilt square fabric) :)

Please let us know how you like it, even if you have to sneak it into the house.

Hello fellow BF members, a retired engineer and architect here.

I have carried various folding knives during my working years (Schrade, Smith & Wesson, and Buck).

Now we live in a retirement community and my wife and I have a kitchen and garage replete with cutting implements.

So I’m asking myself “Do I still need to carry a knife?”

Well the answer for me is “Yes, I do, one that is light weight, light-duty, and easy to operate aged-handed”.

So I recently acquired two new Spyderco knives: a Dragonfly 2 and a Para 3 (both LW) that meet my requirements nicely.

However, even though my “requirements are met”, I’m about ready to click the order button on a Manix 2 LW.

Maybe a Native 5 also…

And our Focus ST really needs a Spyderco Rescue Assist (Orange) for his console box…

And then there’s the Mazda, feeling left out…

Oh, and we do live by a big lake, might need some Salt versions too…
I, at 80, still carry one during all waking hours but feel much less need to acquire new ones and, typically, have more daily need to use a pocket flashlight.
