New mass drop knife

Probably a very stupid question, but as a newbie to knives, I really only want to put money into users. Yard work, boxes, mountain biking needs, camping, etc. I've never had a knife like this, (looks amazing for the price) but is it a user that can hold up to what my PM2 or Manix 2 LW can do, or more of a pretty, not hard use one?

Just my $0.02....
PROVIDED the knives make good on their promise, I think they should be sturdy enough for real use, including everything you describe. From the "in hand" pic, the Crux won't fill your hand like a Manix or PM 2, however. Incidentally, the in-hand pic is what pusshed me into taking the plunge this morning. It's just the right size for me.

Given the blade thickness and profile, I'm not expecting it to be quite as good a slicer either--unless it's wearing a hollow grind. Oooh that'll be sexy if so; I love me some hollow grind!

WE knives are good user knives, you should have no issues. as for how good it will do at specific tasks, thats up to the blade profile/geometry and what your cutting. im sure it will be fine and stand up well.

I would get it, but it is SO much like the archbishop, and I got an Archbishop. I did get the Falcon ordered though! The Falcon reminds me of a small Fortis, which is my favorite EDC folder. Love the Fortis!!

The Falcon appealed me for a few reasons so I got in on that drop:
  • It has a unique look
  • I don't have anything from WE or FF
  • I've been drawn to small knives lately. Loving my CRK small Inkosi.
I almost got in on the Crux today but ultimately decided against it. It's just a bit boring to me and I've already got others that are too similar (ZT 0808/0900, others).

Ultimately the size and especially the blade shape pushed me into the Crux. I got in on the Falcon out of curiosity and excitement, in spite of the fact it may prove too small for my tastes. I think if I could have chosen between the two at the start, the Crux would have been my pick.

Which leads me to some of the things I find most intriguing about all of this:

First, the turn around between the Falcon and Crux was only a few weeks. Was that the original marketing plan, or was the Falcon launch so successful they decided to push the Crux forward to ride the wave?

Will the timing backfire? I know the short turn around made the choice more difficult for me--especially given knife 1 delivery is still 5 months away.

The Crux has 350 buyers right now, essentially at the end of day 1. Does anyone know how the Falcon did after it's first day?

So based on what everyone sees and knows about how these are produced etc, if I have the option of one for now...PM2, Manix 2, or this? Really only want to grab one of them for now, and intend to use which ever it is daily.

The Crux is selling at a slower pace than the Falcon with only 410 in nearly two days.

However, let's see how many they sell once the drop ends in 13 days.

Perhaps the December 2015 delivery is off-putting to some people.

Given that the Crux isn't expected until December, I say one of the others. If you need a knife, you need a knife :).

Perhaps. Or maybe the drops are a little too close to each other? I recall more marketing hype with the Falcon too. Youtubers with prototypes, etc. Maybe the novelty of concept pushed up sales last month too?

They are very different knives. Different blades different pivots. Also as said you won't get this till later in the year and you can buy a spyderco today. Do you like bearings or washers? Do you like titanium frame locks or g10 with steel liners (pm2 compression lock or manix2 ball lock).

So I'm moving soon..... before I buy this, does anyone know if mass drop will allow a change of address mid order? If I move sept-October and these are delivered in December then I would like to be able to still receive it and not have it lost in transit somewhere.

I just went to my Falcon order and here's how. I'm navigating through my smartphone (just in case it's different on another platform):

  • Go to your Account > Transactions
  • Next to the order you'll see CONTACT SUPPORT right under DOWNLOAD RECEIPT
  • Reason & Order# are filled in automatically
  • Under "Issue with my order" choose "Ship to a different address"
  • Fill in the new shipping address

Just made the purchase

In spite of myself, I joined the drop. It appears to be too great a price for a utilitarian blade to pass up.

Now...the waiting is the hardest part...

I wonder what type of pricing pressure these knives are going to place on the market. Perhaps nothing from an outcome standpoint, but there will be demands from enthusiasts no doubt.

What I love most about these project is the number of new knife buyers that they are attracting. There will be people who have never owned a decent knife, will buy one, then be hooked on quality cutlery. Exciting times in the industry for sure.

Well, I am one of those who are new to knives and was lured in with the Massdrop Falcon & Crux drops. Now I am a paid Gold sponsor here and have since purchased a ZT 0450CF and Benchmade 940-1701. I am now eyeing the Olamic Wayfarer 247 and the CK Sebenza 21. The slope is getting very slippery! :)

Fantastic! Welcome to the sickness!!

Amazing the difference in number sold vs Falcon - I wonder if it is buyer fatigue, size, style or what?

My guess (and it's just a guess) is that they tried to piggyback the Crux on the success of the Falcon...and that it was too soon. I suspect most of the folks that follow Massdrop for blades were seduced by novelty of concept (FFKW, WE, etc.) that surrounded the first release and therefore bought in readily. With the novelty of concept gone and the base saturated, the second knife did not recieve the same level of attention. The Falcon also had several "reviews" seeded on YouTube. I only saw one for the Crux.

The other factor is the unknown of having no product history. What level of QC will be in place once mass production is in full swing? We all expect it to be up to WE brand standards. Probably a reasonable gamble for the hard-core blade community at $125. A second knife ups the gamble to $250 which is nearing Slysz Bowie territory. Given that perspective, is it worth the uncertainty?

After joining the first drop, buying into the Crux was difficult for me. I did so with reservation. The design appeal of the second knife was just too much for me. Provided it meets quality expectations, it should be a near perfect fit for my "style" of EDC. I wish the Crux had dropped first--I probably would've stayed clear of the Falcon.

I won't be joining the next drop unless I am blown away by the first two... AFTER they're delivered. I do remain curious of how/when the next release will be handled, as well as any repeat drops of the first two. Watching this whole concept play out is fascinating to me.

ETA: Looks like I said most of this before, but less-well organized. Sorry for the redundancy, folks.
