Thanks Moose for the pics.
It would be nice have a side by side compare with f1, review I mean.

I'd guess it depends on the wider edge angle due to the thicker blade.I have the Mora Bushcraft Black, but find the Mora Compagnon ,the Compagnon Heavy Duty, and the Bushcraft Triflex going smoother through wood.Slicing easier.
Even after some sharpening the difference was very noticable.
Is this due to the black coating?

But the Mora Compagnon Heavy Duty has the same thickness as the Mora Bushcraft Black, and that one just glides through the wood without effort.I'd guess it depends on the wider edge angle due to the thicker blade.

the black coating on the one I handled was pretty slick - I'm surprised to hear that even the Companion HD cuts better.
OTOH, I like the handles on the HD & Robust more than the black.
Yes but the grind on the HD is somewhat broader than the one on Bushie Black: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_A-yh9nUftY/UJhRQl08ipI/AAAAAAAADZ0/KDh_mQMddHc/s1600/IMG_0792.JPGBut the Mora Compagnon Heavy Duty has the same thickness as the Mora Bushcraft Black, and that one just glides through the wood without effort.

I found the picture on the web (not mineI just measured my HD and the Bushcraft Black.
They have both a 7mm wide bevel.
There I see no difference.
Nice comparison picture by the way.
The Mora Bushcraft Black does look very nice.
But as with many things, only when working with it will show how it performs.
The HD and the 2,5mm thick Compagnon do wonderful.
The Hultafors GK and the HVK also performed better than the Bushcraft Black.
This is all my experience (don't know about others).
Even after sharpening, the Bushcraft Black didn't perform any better than the edge right out of the box
Friction is less on coated blades?I found the picture on the web (not mine). I don't own any of those two knives - unfortunately. However it looks like the HD has a wider grind but if you get it to 7 mm in both cases than I don't understand why the BB displayes a greater friction than the HD
. I can't see the coating having that kind of impact. On the contrary, they say the friction is lesser on most coated blades. The plot deapens
.

Performance is a relative thing, but the Hultafors GK doesn't have the geometry to outcut a Black!
The HVK will roll before it can outcut the Black.
Checking the Robust and the Black side by side, they have the same geometry but not the same microedge or smooth finish.
The polished Robust has a much finer finish and after stropping, both knives have a microedge of similiar type.
That means the cutting performance now, are closer to the same for both knives.
The Robust has lesser resistance through wood due to finer surface finish.

I guess it depends on what you are actually cutting and what kind of coating there is. I owned a Fälllkniven Whale (coated blade): http://www.knifeworks.com/fallknivenwhitewhalechefknife7blade.aspxFriction is less on coated blades?
I thought it was the other way around..No coating makes the blade slide easier through material.Especially when there is a rough coating which can be seen on Tops Knives and the Beckers Bk15-16-17 for example..
I have been looking closely myself also.
And what I also noticed is that the bevel on the Black feels like it is almost hollow, making the the corner/angle where the bevel starts more acute, sharp.
This in contrary to the HD,that has a much more rounded angle where the bevel starts.
The surface is much smoother on the HD, like you say. That is very clear.
So the solution to make the Black perform as well? Polishing the blade of the Black?
Yes,not all coatings are equal .That is trueI guess it depends on what you are actually cutting and what kind of coating there is. I owned a Fälllkniven Whale (coated blade): http://www.knifeworks.com/fallknivenwhitewhalechefknife7blade.aspx
The blade sliced through different materials like if there weren't there. Much more effectively than my Fällkniven PP12.

I have the feeling the problem is not the edge with the Black. In reply to noviomagus
No,I'm not surprised about Your statement about the GK, I simply think it's impossible for the thick GK bevel to cut better than the thinner bevel of the Black.
It has to be that Your Black arrived with a nonrefined factoryedge that was very coarse.
Sharpen and hone the edge of the Black should cure this initial problems of Yours.
I did this to mine and I will probably put the black on the beltsander and convex it.
My Hultafors GK has spent a lot of time on the beltsander and it is now a much better cutter than with the original edge.
If I would use the GK on concrete or other rough materials in the construction buisness, I would have kept the original bevel.
For use on wood I found the GK original geometry useless.
The HVK and GK are made in China and this is why they can be so cheap.
They are good for the money, no question about that, but a Swedish made Mora is the No.1 working knife for me and no China made can ever change that!

I think it's here where 'the problem' might be.Yes I agree with this observation,it's in line with what I can see too.
There are small variations in grindheight of the bevel too, as You rightfully stated, but too small to explain the difficulties You have had with the Black.

I think it's here where 'the problem' might be.
Im gonna give the sharpening another try.
Maybe reprofile that sharp corner/angle bevel, if regular sharpening doesn't help.
More of a convex edge would fix it for sure.
Yes, I think the same!
Convex will definitely increase cutting performance.
I will do the same, but not yet as I'm quite pleased with the performance of the Robust and will evaluate that model before it's time for the Black.
