New Ratweiler pic thread.

I got the .25" version and I think Swamprat has changed their process. Mine came with thin and very even primary bevel. In the past, I've gotten knives from Busse and kins where it gets substantially thicker from belly to tip. There's no need for me to send this knife out for a Re-grind.

You may be right! I was all set to contact Josh at "Razor Edge Knives" for my Chophouse thick-cut, expecting it to be >0.050 behind the edge, but it measures in <0.040 which isn't too bad for a heavy-duty chopper, and the grind is high enough that the primary remains pretty thin. All I need to do is blend-down the edge-shoulders a little.

I just got my black G10/tanker gray Ratweiler in the mail. This knife is one in the best looking knives I've ever seen. Great fit and finish, razor sharp and at 1/4 thick still able to cut well. The ergonomics feel odd to me though. I find the front finger groove is a touch to large. Maybe after really using it I may feel different.

Gratuitous RatWeiler pics!!! :D My 1/4" Combat Grade Bruised Tanker RW arrived today! Here she is with her high-class sister.

Besides the obvious thickness difference, there are a few other slight differences between the two. The G10 on the LE is a little bit darker shade of blue, and there appears to only be 2 layers of blue for every layer of black, vs the CG where there are 3 layers of blue for every layer of black, and the blue is a bit brighter. The rope-cut grooves in the LE are significantly wider and deeper, thus further apart with fewer of them.

Finally, the rivet tubes are a LOT different! The tubes on the new CG are different than any Bussekin I've seen to date. The counter-sinks are not anywhere near as deep into the G10, so much so that the edges of the flared tubes actually sit a bit higher than the G10 in spots. I'm not sure how I feel about this yet; it could be better than the sharp edges in the G10 created with the tubes counter-sunk so far. My choice, if I had one to make, would be for the flared tube edges to be just below the surface of the G10, just like the one in the middle of the handle on the non-logo side of the CG, seen in a close-up here:

The reverse side of the same rivet, where it sits a bit proud of the G10 surface:

I will echo the observation that "knife chop" had; this CG is the thinnest behind the edge of any 1/4" or greater Bussekin I've ever seen. This is FANTASTIC!!! I tried to capture that in a pic:

From the edge of the choil to about 1/3 of the way around the belly, mine measures a mere 0.033" behind the sharpened edge!!!  It increases from 0.033" thick at 1/3 around the belly to 0.052" at the tip. Kudos to David, who sharpened this knife!!!

Here are a couple individual pics of each of my new RatWeilers.

LE #77

CG

Some quick stats on the two. Interestingly, the CG is 1/8" longer (measured) in the blade.

LE #77:
0.160" thick
7 5/8" Blade
13 1/4" OAL
478.1g (16.86 oz)

1/4" CG:
7 3/4" Blade
13 3/8" OAL
0.261" thick
629.7g (22.21 oz)

The 1/4" CG feels just perfect in-hand! If the original RW had felt this good to me, I would have never sold mine. :( The thicker scales combined with the extra contouring vs. the flatter original makes ALL the difference for me! I didn't care for the finger groove in the handle before, but it fits me nicely on the newer model. Some Rats are going to be really sorry if they missed out on this offer... :(

Exactly the reason I was thinking of having the new scales fit to my mastiff :) Those are some awesome blades my friend. I don't know about the high flaring though, looks like that might be a potential hot spot. Still, what a knife!

Spyder great pics; thanks for the nice close look at the G-10 scales.
Interestingly, the micarta handles on my new CG Ratweiler are recessed more like your LE, you can see it on the bottom here:

Great pics man, thanks!
Interesting about those rivets,

And man, what a great edge they put on that! That should be the gold standard for all Busse kin..

I noticed that on the rivets also. some are flushed with the surface of the micarta and some not so much and I really like that.

Have we had a muddy & tan yet?

Best looking one have seen yet.👍 Does it seem like some tan micarta just turns out better looking than others? Some of the newer blades that have tan mic have looked like more of a "salmon" color than tan which kinda turned me off from ordering anything with it. An ASH1 I had rescently the tan mic looked like friggin leather which was awesome. If you get a chance would like to see more pics, if you can get some hand oils on it would be great too, wanna see how dark gets. Kinda bummed haven't ordered anything with it now. Might change some orders.

This is what I'm referring looking "salmon" and have seen many like it.

Here's a pic of the logo side. It's actually a little dark. The first picture is much more true to life as far as color/tint.

Thanks. You seem to have plenty of KIN, have you had any that the tan mic did not look to tan-ish? Wondering if its just the photos that poeple take that make them look off. Seems like black micarta varies blade to blade too. My BGASH the scales almost look grey instead of the usual green/black that black mic usually looks like.

All of my tan has been good. I tried to get some more pictures for you and noticed that a lot of them came out looking that 'salmon' color you were describing. These scales definitely do not look pinkish, but in the indoor lighting it was trying to come across that way. I've got one decent one uploading, I'll post it if photobucket cooperates.

Great looking muddy!!

Thanks bud, I'm going to get a few days out with it this week, I feel like a little kid :)

Wow does that ever look good... I am definitely worried that the skinnies won't have that nice high grind. Guess I'll find out on Wednesday! ;)

I haven't got my skinny in yet, but did look at my LE side by side with this quarter-incher. There's not a huge difference, although the LE is not ground as high, for sure. I really like this blade, chiral. I usually go with the skinnies, but this thing in 1/4" has the wow factor. I expect it to be a very good chopper for its size, and I don't know how to describe it, but you know the feeling you get when you pick up a blade and it just feels 'right.' This blade has that. If you don't fall in love with the 3/16, move it and grab a 1/4 bud. I was on the fence, but am now so glad I went for it.
