New release: Recon 1 in S35VN & SATIN finished

It's going to be my primary daily user so I'll be using it for everything that calls for a knife. On weekdays I work in the IT industry so it will see light use, but on weekends I spend all my time renovating investment houses so it will see plenty of use. As for the shock factor in public, I live in Australia so pretty much any knife spotted in public would be followed by fainting women, S.W.A.T teams descending on me from above and TV news crews at the scene. I think a Recon would scare the daylights out of anyone in my nanny state. Swiss army knife would be the only thing you can get away with here.
I'm sure the women also faint because of how handsome you are haha. But in all seriousness, these bigger knives are (IMO) not meant for office carry, but then again, I don't work in an office so I wouldn't know. I have taken it against logs in my backyard and just chopped right through them. (I need to work on my technique, but that's besides the point).

Hopefully if Cold Steel sees alot of buzz about this they will bring uncoated to their main line up.

Get on those Cold Steel boards and start creating buzz. "Oh I'll buy three of the s35vn Recons, too bad they don't come in XHP or I'd buy 12"
more people are intimidated by a mean black blade than a satin one, at least i think. I've yet to have anyone freak out over me using a knife in public though. I generally carry a 4max so it kind of dwarfs a recon. I have beat the hell out of recon's with out causing any blade play or any other issues. Particularly hammering it down between baseboards and the wall and using it to pry them loose. Along with regular use around the ranch.
I had heard just the opposite. Many years sgo, a knife enthusiast friend told me of some police report that claimed that assailants were more intimidated by a satin finished blade pulled in self defense than by a black blade. For some reason, I think that a black blade used in public doesn t get as much attention as a a silver blade. But I also have never had a problem using my pocket knife in public. Probably has more to do with the user than the knife.

I don't know, I definitely think it's more of the size of the blade than the blade color, because I can and have pulled out my mini recon in plain sight and no one even gave me a dirty look. But the full-sized one did get a dissatisfied murmur from around me. In my opinion, these are knives are knives, and people will see them as sharp and dangerous, it's part of the territory and to me, part of the allure of it.

I ordered a spearpoint Recon from B of C last night. $137 US shipped. It's a lot more than I've paid for XHP Recons but had to have one.
I ordered the drop point Recon 1 satin and should have it by tomorrow. I also was hesitant in paying more for S35VN over XHP, but since I am in Canada and this one is an exclusive, I figured what the hell. It will be my first CS knife as well.

It will be my main folder for fairly hard use in the woods, so the satin just might stay purdier a little bit longer. ;)

You won't regret that decision. I have 4 of the satin versions now, 2 spear point and 2 clip point, they are fantastic.

Do you have a preference of the blade type?

I picked clip point for no reason other than I have more than a few spear shaped blades....

The dead honest truth is I can't seem to decide which I like better. Some days I think spear and then I pick up the clip point and I think yep, this one. All I know for sure is that I'll never part with either. I've just decided to enjoy having 2 that I can swap between, that way I never get bored :)

I feel the same way.
I ve always liked the spear point Recon1 and felt comfortable using it for outdoor work. Then I got the clip point and I really like it. Sometimes having a somewhat fine point is useful.
Still can t make up my mind about getting the s35v version or waiting for the satin xhp blade of the furture.

Good info. Thx.

If I like the drop satin s35v as much as I expect to, my second will be the standard spear point coated. About $25 cheaper than the satin and XHP is no downgrade from s35v.

My Recon 1 arrived today. Perfect knife for what I intend to use it for (companion to my ESEE 6 fixed blade in the woods).

It is a beast but not as heavy as I expected.

It is very well made and the G-10 is the grippiest I have ever used. It is also stupid sharp. I cut my finger (tiny cut) and didn’t even notice (the blood everywhere gave it away).

Very happy with this one. It won’t be my last CS.

PICTURES! Congrats mate, glad you like it. Amazing what a small cosmetic refresh can do on an already proven classic from CS. And for the millionth time CS, i'll say it again...make this a staple in your lineup along with satin lawmans and AK47's and you'll bring a whole batch of new customers. Enjoy!

Great knife. Already thinking about a spearpoint XHP.;)

I’ll post a pic later. Having problems with file size all of the sudden. Weird.

I remember when you started the thread in General asking for advice on a knife. I'm glad to hear you like the Recon 1. I've owned several and have loved them all. In my opinion, it's one of Cold Steel's best offerings.

Yup. Some good advice from this community helped me buy a great pair of knives for the woods. The Recon 1 and the ESEE 6. Both are tanks and should outlast me!

I honestly never looked at CS before as I wasn’t a fan of a few of their videos I saw. Glad I tried the Recon 1.

The Recon 1 is a great knife and I am already deciding on which fully serrated CS I should buy. I have narrowed it down to a Recon 1 in XHP, a 4” Voyager in BD1 (I like this steel on my Manix 2 and it is an inexpensive knife) or a Code 4 in XHP. Decisions, decisions.... ;)

It's funny you should say this. I've been thinking the same thing. I love serrated knives, but I've never tried a serrated Cold Steel. That needs to change.

The Voyager is a great knife, especially if you know you like BD1. It offers a lot of bang for the buck. I'm very happy with mine.

Also, so you're aware, Lansky makes an inexpensive sharpener specifically designed to fit Cold Steel's serration pattern. I haven't tried it, but it gets good reviews.

Thanks for the Lansky tip! I will definately grab one as I ordered a Recon 1 Spear point with full serrations tonight.

With your help and others on here on BF, I quickly discounted the Code 4 (not a fan of aluminum scales) and the Voyager (a few have said it isnt the most ergonomic or most gentle on pockets) and bought another Recon 1. I just love the form factor.

I have a ton of knives including Spyderco, Fox, Benchmade, Kershaw/ZT and I haven’t put the Recon down since I got it a few days ago.

kind of unfortunate and I know it voids warranty. I am a produce manager and french cutting vegetables constantly with my s35vn recon. I must know my knife is clean. upon first disassembly I found rust in the pivot hole (coarsely machined) of the knife even though I kept my knife oiled constantly.. Put it all back together and disassembled 2 weeks later to find more rust.
