New run of 54s

I ordered a Desert Ironwood, and I'm trying to promise myself I'm going to use it.... But maybe if I got an acrylic, I would be more likely to use that one....

I'm having a bit of a time figuring out which offerings were available in a single blade and where to get them. It's too late now but I should have paid more attention when these were listed.

Paid for my cougars claw today so I'll have that in hand early next week.

The way the DLT Appaloosa turned out is unexpected, but perfect for me. I'm usually the guy buying the black camel bone that is mostly white with just a touch of black. So, I'm pretty excited about these. The snakewood looks like it's going to be luck of the draw if you get stripes, spots, or not much of either. The burlap turned out pretty good too. I need to start getting some invoices for 54's before I end up ordering something else. Will be interesting to see how the blood red jig bone turns out. Judging from the three below, chances are it's going to be nice too.

Now where oh where is the blood red DLT? I would love to see a picture while I wait for my pre-order to be filled.

@Eric@DLT

Any updates regarding your SFO's.

..the others are taking forever to post up on DLT's site. GEC images are normally a couple weeks behind grrr. Its getting really hard to hold out because so many of the 54's that are available now are really nice.

My two in desert ironwood came today, but no pics yet. Supposed to be sunny tomorrow, so I'll take plenty pics then. The grain on both of mine is terrific: one straighter grained with more contrast, and the other dark burl. Interesting that these new run #54s have the clip up front with the spear behind with pile side pull, while the original run in '08 had the spear in front so both pulls could be mark side. Here's my original BJ in burnt grizzly cut bone, to show the difference.

Would you fools recommend getting a Desert Ironwood, or the Beaver Tail? I'm looking to get one, as well as the DLT SFO.

Desert ironwood is one of the premier knife handle materials in the world, and GEC has only used it so far on very limited test runs of single digits. This may be one of your only chances to get something in this material.

Is Brazilian Cherry wood or bone?

I really like the 54's that have been released so far. I am always tempted to buy most of the different variations in handle material. But I am going to hold on this until the Maher & Grosh jigged bone comes out and make a decision at that point. The price bothers me, but I am going to consider my choice carefully. No resale for me if I go overboard and buy more than I can reasonably justify. It's money poured down a hole for the most part.

I absolutely love the look of the Maher and Grosh knives. They really know how to make the best of a design. Far far nicer than most of the stuff we see, IMHO. But....... they are pricey. Very pricey. If I needed a safe queen to totally blow me away, I'd be all over the ebony Maher and Grosh. They even got there's in Northfield trim and a moose pattern instead of a Tidioute jack, which is a big bonus.

But for a user, it's Beaver Tail all the way. The jigged wood has an amazing grip, but still looks pretty darned good. Great shield. The blade etch is irrelevant, is it will soon disappear as patina forms. The jack pattern means that you probably won't use the same finger nail to open both blades, so one nail doesn't get overly stressed from repeated use. And probably half the price of the Maher and Grosh.

Got pics of my two ironwood 2-bladers today. I've wanted some decent ironwood for a looooong time, so these are very prized! The two sides of both knives are nicely matched, which I really like as well. Like I said earlier, two very different types of grain, and both beautiful. The only thing that compares with good ironwood to my eye is really good curly koa. Maybe we'll see a run of that material some day. Thank you, Dale, for this terrific SFO!

Those look spectacular. Beautiful knives! Love the grain pattern and the shield just sets the whole package off.

I usually can justify only getting 1 per run, so I settled on the DLT SFO, in the blood red jigged bone and oak shield. I love, love, love the red soup bone covers I've seen and though I know these are quite different, it gets me a knife I can experience a good red color in at least.

These are all very nice. I'm resisting the urge to get one before they're all gone.

What's the story behind the Beaver Tail theme? I remember it from earlier runs but I never got the low down. Does it have any particular meaning?
