Well, we rented a new shop space. I'm very excited about it. It will get the business out of my basement, and allow me to legitimize the business. Here in the basement, I couldn't get a business license because I'm not 'domestic' in nature. So, no insurance either. Plus, my homeowners agent tells me I am in 'gross negligence' and no claim would be paid if my home burns down. We've rented 1200 sq feet of light industrial space. It has a storefront, a small office area with a bathroom, and a 18 x 36' warehouse with a bay door. Bonus! It has a mez space that has been walled off and is airconditioned! Woot! I'm going to post pics as we go. What I have first is a couple of pics of the warehouse part and a real blurry pic of the office.

This pic is in from the bay door. The floor is already epoxied. Neato. You can see the mez space up top from here. That top space is 22' x 18'. There is a 9' wide balcony for storage of handle materials. The lighting is a problem. And there is only electric on one wall right so far.

This is looking out from the door that leads into the office. This bay door is HUGE. My basement has a regular door, but nowhere near as much natural light.

The compressor is going to go under these stairs.

This pic was taken just inside the front door. The office is straight ahead, and the bathroom is on the right.

We're lucky in that we're on the end unit, and there is a nice side yard. The landlord says we can punch holes through this area if we wanted to build a shed and put the compressor and dust collection outside. Thats sweet, plus Boudreaux has a nice place to lay in the sun. I get to bring my dog to work nowadays. I always loved being able to do that.

Now, on to the DUMB. Dan had a ball laughing at me for this. I went and bought the black pipe to make the compressor drops around the shop, and screwed all that pipe together with the male connection on the nipples. Nobody said anything until I was all done and it was time to test the system. Of course, the compressor just blew all the air out through the hole in the connector. Duh. Seven drops. I made the same mistake 7 times. Boy did the guys have a laugh at my expense yesterday. So this afternoon I gotta go buy the female, and replace the connectors. LOL. Dylan tried to help me out. He suggested small female female hose would fix the problem. LOL. No. Gotta do it right. DAMN I'm dumb.

Total Score! Congrats on the new digs. What an awesome way to start out the new year. Can't wait to watch the WIP.

I'm calling the security company this morning. Thanks!

Congratulations! That looks awesome!

This part sounded a little scary - what was the cause for "gross negligence" - should others here be worried?

Looking good!! It's always a good feeling when you can go totally legit and get your insurance straight.
Congratulations!!!!

I suspect the gross negligence was operating a business without a business license and insurance, which would require safety inspectors and certain code checks. If you only make knives as a hobby and don't sell more than a certain amount a year, insurance will cover as long as you arent violating electrical codes or running a propane tank/forge in your basement. But even that can vary state by state / province by province.

Looks like a solid spot. The air thing happens. If you aren't making mistakes, you are not doing anything to push yourself beyond your current comfort zone.

Good for you.

Awesome Andy!! That space is gonna be so good for you. Have fun setting it all up buddy!!

Awesome, Andy! I'm very excited for you. Imagine the satisfaction you feel as you get that first blade completed in the new shop for which you've worked so hard. Of course, please keep us updated with photos as you get set up. I love watching a shop come together.

TF basically spelled it out. I wasn't going to be able to get a business license, so the business was technically illigitimate. Sugar Hill only gives business licenses in your home for domestic businesses. Any tool not required in a normal home (all of mine) disqualify the business. Should have gotten into curtains, or cakes or something. Additionally, specific things we use were considered grossly negligent by my homeowners coverage. Forge, oven, grinders, lots of stuff we commonly use.

So, had there been a fire while the business was here, no coverage. That is scary.

Very nice. You need an old Steelcase desk to take up some of that space? :)

If you were closer, I'd take you up on that.

Andy, that's great. Putting myself in your shoes right now, I get this super stoked and creative gleeful feeling when looking at that nice clean bay and thinking about rigging it up perfect for a knife shop. I'll be watching the WIP and living vicariously building a new shop.

Congratulations on your ongoing success.

Tryp, I'll take that steelcase desk! Just saying, I'll probably be over the mountains soon anyway...

+1  I can see and hear the pompom wielding high kicking cheer leaders now, "Give me an F, Give me an I, Give me a D . . . ."

Make sure you don't do the same thing with the electrical polarity! And remember, hot goes on the left, cold on the right! :D

hahahaha curtains and cakes... Seriously though, I am a little jealous as well. Good luck, and make sure you have a floor plan for everything. Although that will probably change as you bring stuff in hehe.

I am assuming you got black steel pipe, right? Because black plastic (abs) is not pressure rated.
