NEW spyderholes BM's

The new Lum design is quite striking I think. I'll assume that the agreement BM/Spyderco had with the Vex equally works with these models, but I sure wish BM was required to credit Spyderco publically. Plus, am I the only one who thinks the redesigned Pika and Mini-Pika look a lot more similar to the Delica and Endura now? Eh, whatever...I really want that Lum.

I agree with the Spyderco look with some of the Benchmades. The new Dejavoo looks strikingly similar to some Spydies models. It is also a nice looking knife designed by Lum.

the Pika II series looks so much like the Endura/Delica it's not even funny, i'm not happy with benchmade right now.....

Yep, and the name is a little too close to the truth.

Those new Pikas are a little to close to an Endura for me.

Dejavoo-is a liner lock-wish they used a better lock like axis or even a ti frame-great looking knife though

well, heck, they have a 3D style textured FRN, steel liners, and a *hole in the blade*, can't get much closer to being an Endura/Delica, all it needs is the 'Bug on the blade and VG-10 steel and you'd be hard pressed to tell them apart.....

I really do wonder if the "agreement" is that Spyderco is building the SpyderHole equipped benchmades *for* benchmade, if this is the case, why doesn't benchmade simply admit it, it may actually smooth over some of the animosity Spyderfans are feeling towards Les Di Asis and Company

Benchmade; the Micro$oft of knives

I said this on the Spyderco forum, but i'll put it here too. The companies have an agreement, therefore it won't stop me from buying Benchmades. But the new Grips look like D'allaras, the Pikas look like Enduras and the Deja looks, well, like I've seen it before.... I like Benchmade, but I've got a strong sense of loyalty to Spyderco due to it's great forum, my respect for Sal and my belief in their knives. I don't mind Benchmade using the hole, but I look at those new knives and I don't think Benchmade, I think Spyderco. And I have a greater sense of brand loyalty to Spyderco, so if I like the new round hole pika, I'd get an Endura etc.... Just seems weird to me that Benchmade, which i associate with great quality and the Axis lock, seems to be moving to round hole opening and linerlocks. I feel Spyderco makes better round hole and linerlocks, so why not stick to what you do best?

I like their Lum, but my favourite of their new knives has to be the new HK14205. 3.4 inch G10 Axis lock... It looks the best, and not surprisingly, it looks the most "Benchmade" to me. That's the one I'll be keeping an eye on...

It means spyderco is the most innovatieve brand.
They lead the way and benchmade is only copying them.
It's a great compliment towards Spyderco.:p

Spyderco should focus on itself and continue the great job they're doing

Love the Dejavu for the same reason I love the Caly, it definitely "pay homage" to the Caly (wish some credit were given). But the liner lock makes it a complete no-go for me. Nor does S30V sweeten the pot, given how many S30V blades chip readily at low angles. I'm planning to stick with the Caly 3 VG-10, and move to ZDP-189 when it comes out.

The new Grips definately look a lot more like the the D'Allara drop point (I just ordered a D'Allara DP today, before I even knew the grips had been redesigned like that) with the round hole opener and hollow grind (at least I think they were saber/flat before). The D'Allara, with it's wire clip, and greatly contoured handle has much better ergos for my tastes than the older Grips I handled (the contours on the D'Allara and Native 3D just fit my hand much better), plus I prefer VG-10 to 154CM so the pendulum was swinging in the Spyderco's favor. I also liked the hollow grind which makes it easier to reprofile, but now the Grip is on equal footing in that regard. The locks are both extremely smooth and strong, so that seems like a wash (BB lock seemed smoother to me, the Axis easier to operate one handed), but the D'Allara was cheaper and my steel preference sealed the deal for me. The grips are smaller in the pocket, though, but I sacrafice pocket comfort for using comfort any day of the week.

As for Benchmade's using the Spyderhole so prevelantly now, I guess imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I just hope Sal & co. are getting a deal they consider fair, as the Spyderhole, at least in my mind, is the signature design feature of a Spyderco folder. I much prefer the Spyderhole to a thumbstud.

I like that Lum design a lot, but my irritation at BM steadily grows. I really wish I were in the inner circle of things so that I could hear what this "agreement" really is, and how Sal really feels about it.

the new Grips look like D'allaras

I'm pretty sure I bought a sheepfoot 550 Griptillian about 2 years before I saw the new DP D'Allara available. My view is the DP D'Allara looks strikingly like a Grip except with the round hole. But carry on, you're not the only one with that opinion.

The new Grips definately look a lot more like the the D'Allara drop point

When the D'Allara Drop Point came out I immediately thought that it looked like a 550 Grip copy with a round hole and Axis lock "homage".

The Grip came first.

Edit.. just posted that before reading jimbo@stn23's post. I'm not the only one then..

Nobody is suggesting that the New grip stole the design, only that it now looks like a Spyderco, the D'Allara, specifically. That's the whole point of the hole being trademarked, because it gives the appearance of a Spyderco.

I really do not understand all this discontent ! Sal and Les are intelligent and know what they are doing! I am sure all this are beneficial to both of them!!:D

I'm aware that many people thought the D'Allara DP looked a lot like the Grips when it came out. I just posted my impression that the Grip and D'Allara look a lot more alike now with both having a round hole and hollow grinds (assuming I was right about the previous versions of the Grip being saber/flat). I also pointed out that I feel the round hole, at least to me, is the most recognizable symbol of a Spyderco folder, and I hope that Sal & co. are happy with the agreement. I'm no expert in trademark or copyright issues so I will refrain from expanding on that last comment, and I think it was beat to death a few times already.

I think that all of these comments about how Sal might not really be “content” with the deal he voluntarily made with Benchmade concerning the use of the hole are incredibly condescending, offensive, and insulting to Sal. I mean, the man founded, owns, and runs one of the premiere knife companies in the world. You don’t think he knows a thing or two about the knife business?? I am confident he is capable of negotiating with Benchmade concerning the simple use of his trademark. It happens THOUSANDS of times each day in the business and manufacturing world. The man is not some start up custom maker working out of his garage who Benchmade “conned” out of some new knife innovation. Jeez, how about a little credit. He owns the hole, he allowed Benchmade to use it, and he is being paid what he thinks it is worth. Believe me, he is being compensated a lot more than you think, just as his lawyers ensured he would be. Oh, and the reason Benchmade does not mention that the hole is a Spyderco trademark in their ads is because the very detailed (dozens of pages, at least) trademark contract the two companies entered into does not require it.

Are you somebody who actually knows something, or are you somebody that thinks he does? Unless you are the former, then you don't really know any of that, do you? I'll keep my skepticism on the situation, thanks. You can't tell me that skepticism is disrespectful when no info about anything has been given.
