New Survival Knife From TOPS !

my problem with designs like this is as other said , it does none of its functions listed particularly well. and you might even get the guy that truely thinks that is all he will need to survive in the outdoors.

fire bow divot? sounds dangerous...

The scales are designed to burst into flame with the slightest amount of friction.

The full - length tang is inlayed with Magnesium to augment the fire - building process.

Guaranteed to give the survivalist a life - saving fire in sub - zero conditions.

Not my thing.

This knife looks like a Movie prop.

HAWKE'S HELLION SURVIVOR 2020

No surprise, the entertainment industry is what he and his wife do. TV is their thing. They have a home not far from my last house. The military connections demonstrate nothing good about this knife. What they do demonstrate is that a person well trained can make pretty much any old POS work if need be.

Thinking of floaters - Perhaps this could be a candidate for a boat cadre. It won't function properly as a knife but it will float.

Another knife that tries to do much, and ends up not doing any one thing good. Except maybe weighing you down.

I like Mike Hawke too... Thought hed have a more simple approach to a survival knife.

I agree 100% I have enjoyed his shows on tv and he comes off and is very skilled. But that knife is........ well, not for me.

the length of the blade lets you rest the top on your knee, sandwiched under your forearm, for a steady spindle position actually. - there are other methods of making it work too.

vec

Hi Vec, I am trying to picture this and can not. I lock my wrist against my shin, which will make my hand lower than my knee. I don't see how I could rest the length of blade ontop of my knee in that position and maintain a locked position as well as keep my center of gravity over the drill.

I have used the RC-5's bow drill divot with sucess, however it is not as easy as a smaller hand socket due to the balance. This larger knife would be even harder. Maybe if they put the divot closer to the top of the handle, but even then...
Can you draw a diagram or take a pic of what your stance is for using that divot, I'm just not getting it.

Best regards,

Tony

i saw hawke on a discovery show in the jungle and if im not mistaken he had some mall ninja looking chopper, the info was good but choice of tool left me wondering....

darkwaters>>

It was a cheap machete he picked up at a flea market right before going into the jungle for that show.
It was also on the movie "Dirty Sanchez", with the tip missing and a handle scale gone (I think the handle scale was gone).

I suppose it begs the question, would that mariner knife be legal to carry in the UK ;)

I am not really tooo thrilled about the overall design, looks tacti-cool thou :D

Seriously, Myke Hawke did a pretty decent show on the "I shouldn't be alive" series on ummmm Discovery Channel (??) on the Amazon. He seemed to know his stuff.

About the new design... a saw spine like the one pictured... a pure PITA to try and clean/clear if used to saw any sticky wood (like pine). My Kershaw Model 1005 had a saw spine, and it chewed thru anything, but soft sticky woods gummed up the cross cut edges on the saw spine and in the field it was impossible to clean out and sharpen after using it. The new TOPS blade is going to have the same issues based on the picture/design.

I think this is a perfect example of how knowing how to use a knife does not mean you know how to design a knife.

I respect the man, but I'll stick with my RATs/Moras/Condors. Ironically, one of my favorite small survival fixed blades is by TOPS--the Joe Flowers(Joezilla)-designed Shango. Great little knife by someone who both knows their stuff AND how to design a knife. He also did the Condor Rodan which is another favorite of mine, especially for the money.

I'm sorry but am I the only one who sees the joke? Say Myke Hawke really fast. LOL. I'm just a weird one I know.

He was on an episode of Bizarre Foods. He seemed like a pretty cool guy to me. He needs to tone down the intensity a little though.

Interest thing is that if you watch this fella on his youtube videos or television, all his work is done with plain jane utility knives. I remember an episode of Andrew Zimmern's Bizarre Foods where he was the survival "coach" , almost everything was handled with a standard 12" machete.

Go figure.......:).

Pit--I know you said this looks like something you'd draw up...but I like your designs a LOT better! Your stuff may be different, but it's functional-different. Your designs will do their job naturally without requiring additional thought on the part of the user. This TOPS piece is alien-different. It's so far off the wall that the user is going to have to sit and think for a while before figuring out how to do even basic woods tasks with it--besides chopping and poking of course. :p

it does look kind of cool, in it's own way :D

An in hand shot:

The saw does look very aggressive :

that knife is a sloppy mess. I dont mean to be critical but WTF? Why would anyone buy that knife? Survival knife???? Not even close. As some of you have said on her already, the humble leatherman would be prefered before that ..that..thing..

You know, it is important to trust your gear, or even have the right gear for that matter..but you'd be suprised where some wilderness/bushcraft education and simple mora knife would get you.

Just look at that thing..maybe it will be the cats a$$..i dont know..sure looks like a paperweight to me.

Yep, a China-made POS. I almost fell-off my chair when I saw him use it because I see lots of them here exactly like it.

From what I read, he said he just picked it up in SE Asia (maybe even here). He said later that it was actually a bit heavy and fatiguing to use in fact.

Looks cool and almost bought one though.
