New Survival Knife From TOPS !

I saw this guy on an episode of Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmer. It was a "survival special", He gave the host Andrew Zimmer some wilderness pointers before sending him out on his own. Shelter building, food, water and fire making. Zimmer was unable to get a fire started with a flint so Hawke took over to show him how its done. I swear to you it took the "expert" 59 min to get a fire started in a controlled environment. Some expert?

Maybe Joezilla can chime in on this but starting a fire in the jungle isn't all that easy due to how damp and humid it is. I kind of appreciated that they showed how difficult a task firestarting can actually be even for the so called experts.

I've got to think with Tops history of making knives on the fringe and making numerous survival knives, Hawke probably had some help with all the extras. He may have started with a recurve, in the one show I saw him in, he touted the benefits of a recurve blade, and maybe the tanto point. Beyond that it's Tops marketing machine. Good for him if he can supplement his income with it. Not my cup o' tea, though.

Y'all need to stop hatin'. That's a "hard use" knife right there.
Double guard, double edge, no belly, short sabre grind, straight handle, finger groove, squared butt, exposed tang for your pinky to ride on, pointy extension to greet your palm...what's not to like?

From the resume that Hawke has, you could probably make a survival knife/tool out of a tuna can..... might be as effective as this knife to boot. I could imagine this as a 2020 design where it was for zombie attacks, post holocost where you might pry doors and saw through who knows what....kind of an urban survival sword saw beast. I bet if you asked mr. Hawke candidly, you would take a mora or a tramontina over this tool 10 times out of 10.

Their designs, as a rule, just turn me off. I have used a couple but they are far down my list when it comes to design.

I think that is the absolute perfect survival knife in just one environment: The mall (especially if overun by zombies)

First, this one isn't for me. I would probably hurt myself on the "backup blade", or I would end up chopping my baton up instead of the wood I'm trying to split. That said, I agree with those who stated that there really isn't any need to bash the guy or the knife. It is marketed to those with less bushcraft knowledge as the ultimate tool. Most industry items are marketed this way now. They are all the "best car ever" "only washer/dryer you'll ever need" "most accurate watch". It is really up to the consumer to decide what fits his needs and budget and be discerning. If this is the place to smash knives up and tear the designer/manufacturers to bits, perhaps it would be prudent to open a thread of that title where people can post and vent about what they think is a malignant "blade" (or did someone just do that ). Sounds negative to me. Now, I am going to go make a spoon :D

@ daddy:

Hello.

I am certainly in no position to be a Mod (like Joe, Esav, et al), so I apologize to everybody in advance if I appear to be acting so, but in all honesty, let's try not let the discussion slip into a totally different path with a very inflammatory and dirty outcome.

Its about the knife, the design and its inherent outdoors/wilderness potential---if any---to perform as advertised.

It is certainly not my goal to derail this thread any further, or let have it turn into a total flame fest. However there has been a few posts about his service to our country (I have nothing but praise for those that server our country) among other things about him not knife related.

Maybe that should be talked about in another thread if someone so desired.

As for the knife. To each their own, I am no survival expert off any kind. As others have mentioned it is a bit mallninja-ish in appearance, but some whiskey people others are tequila people.
