New trad forum rule?

That's my thing. I just ignore things that bother me on a forum. As long as they are essentially inconsequential. I probably should not have even commented. In the past year I have probably spent less than 5 hours viewing this forum. Though I do support it, and I did always find it to be a great place to be. Relaxed and mind your manners. Keep it to traditional knives of course :)

Is serial picture-quoting a subforum-wide issue, or is it in the nature of the thread OP cited in his op? If you don't like a thread, you can avoid it and leave it to those who do like it (I sometimes avoid that thread myself, because nobody ever says "great picture of a great knife" when I post a bad picture of an ordinary knife).

No offense intended to anyone.

What indian head are you referring to? I am short on time and don't see it on this page   :foot: :D

I have read all the replies in this thread and will now offer my opinion, for what it's worth (yes, that is one of my pet peeves, people that read the original post only and just hit reply, probably stating or asking the same thing as 10 other posters previous to them, but that is fodder for a different thread).

I think the pictures shown on these threads are the lifeblood of knife commerce, for when people share pics of their knives, be it old or new, it allows others to be exposed to knives they might not otherwise know exist. People will literally run right out and buy a knife based on seeing a picture of it in this forum. In fact, some of the older obscure patterns have led to SFO's and custom knife orders through makers.

I don't see anything wrong with quoting a pic here and there. Specifically, when I have read through 100 pages of a picture thread, and someone comments on a knife, I don't necessarily want to have to go back through a bunch of pages to figure out what knife they are talking about. On the flip side, if someone quotes a post with 10 pictures in the post, that is a little too much to have to scroll through, IMO. And some people DO have internet issues and difficulty loading pages with tons of pics on them.

I see good points on both sides of the discussion, however until the rules change one way or the other, common sense and decency should probably win out for now.

Forum rules are one thing, but you are suggesting that we break the rules of the Internet itself. This type of behavior can not be tolerated. :p

Well, I am a rebel like that...

I'm not sure where the balance is between good bonding among friends and discussions that end up being a cliquish form of exclusion new comers. I rather doubt that the real issue here is untrimmed attributions but rather, the recurring problem of "chattiness" and "me too" posts.

.

I think pinnah nailed it here. I'm not in favor of any rule changes, but some self-restraint might minimize the exclusive trend the thread in question has developed recently. I used to visit there almost every day. Not so much, lately. The cheerleading component isn't particularly entertaining to outsiders.

I think the OP has a valid suggestion. I suspect that is why it ended up as a request in the Traditional Forum Guidelines. I hope everyone that posts takes the time to read them.

Unless we are told otherwise by the powers that be this will remain a request, so please don't beat it to death and keep the discussion civil.

I spend a lot of time on this forum and not always sitting in front of a PC. I use Tap-a-talk on a smartphone. I think the number of images does affect the load time and it can be slow. I've got high speed internet at home and unless the site is slow (which it is sometimes) the number of images don't seem to have an affect on load time.

For the most part I delete the IMG code from my responses, unless I'm making a point about something specific on the knife or the post I'm commenting on isn't easily found scrolling back a few posts.

It's a request folks. You're not going to find me PMing or warning anyone about it. I will say I've already seen a comment in one of the other threads about using too much bandwidth already. Don't continue.

I've seen a lot of moderation on lists and forums. Some good. Some horrible.

What you see here folks is an example of excellent moderation.

Can we please stop quoting pictures of the same knife over and over on the same page.

*50% of the "what traditional knife are you totin' today" thread is people re quoting one picture of a "charlow" saying "nice knife" "i like your knife" "cool set up"

"Bumping" pictures to the next page is OK - but generally this is reserved for good photography, not just to say, "Cool stuff bro"

You can quote the individual without having to repost the same picture 5 + times on the same page.

If you want to comment to someone, just delete the IMG code between the
's and have at it.

Most other forums I frequent, this is a rule.

It helps to cut the clutter, and it generally makes more sense.

Well what say you traditional knife forumites

yea or nay ?

*minor exaggeration

I re-read your post and I agree mostly with what you are saying, however, I am in dissent with it becoming a rule and here is why:

I think you posting this or just kindly asking, without embarrassing any one person, will have it's effects and you will see less of what bothers you. :)

I would expect while many are in agreement with the excessive use of quoting pictures, there are probably many thinking arrggh ! :o :D

I sometimes wish that a few of the members would at least put a little more thought into their replies and think about dropping the pictures from a multi photo post or just picking one of their favorite pictures from that post and carry it forward. If a person always just hits reply and quotes the entire post, then I would say a friendly reminder from a moderator would be OK.

BUT - it is the comments and the occasional picture quote that makes that thread a very popular one and I wish for nothing to change that.

I think it would be a very boring place around here without all of the thoughtful comments and occasional image quoting.

ALSO - sometimes if you are posting a picture and the page turns on the next post, your post will not be seen nearly as much. I often will quote a really nice knife or picture that was on the previous page just to get that members picture a fair look, if you will.

We all have plenty of rules to follow every day at work or when driving or imposed by our government and this is a place where many of us come to relax.

Be careful what you wish for!

Many members here pay to be a member, spend a great deal of cash on their knives, and spend a great deal of time on their pictures, and are generous with their knowledge and skills, many offering up advice instantly, when asked.

I look at it as a privilege to get to see those collections and the pictures they have obviously went to great lengths to capture of their cherished knife.

I would expect any across the board rule change to have unexpected and undesirable side effects - simply - if people cannot relax and enjoy it - or constantly feel pressure from others, that they may not be posting as some others wish them to, they will just quit posting.

I think Frank and Gary do a wonderful job here and yes - there must be rules - but - there are enough, in my opinion - and they do a fine job of balancing and the rules are enforced fairly.

Respectfully,
Primble

I feel the same Primble. Were it not for this forum, and pictures of everyone's knives, I may not be the knife nut I am today. I love seeing pics of knives. The extra clutter from quotes really doesn't bother me. I have, on occasion quoted someone's pics for similar reasons as you.

I only have a few words, OK Barlow, Bad Pic, not worth bumping :D This is kind of a fun thread, BUT
where are the knives??? :D:D

Best regards

Robin

Yeah this one was a one off. A worthwhile discussion though. If it doesn't die on it's own, I'll close it sooner or later. If I have to see Clint Eastwood again it'll likely be sooner. Nice knife! ;)

Just trying for a little levity. I tend to stay out of this kind of thread, although some good points have been made on both sides.

Best regards

I learned the rule long ago on most forums that you don't quote pics, just the text. On some forums it is an actual rule. Many forums' software automatically removes the image links from quotes.

The only time I normally quote a pic would be to ask a specific question about the knife in it, and if the original post containing the pic had scrolled several pages back.
