New trad forum rule?

First, thanks to Gary and Frank (and before them, to Gus and Elliott, and to those before them, if there was anyone) for making this place what it is. I've been a member here for a couple years or more, and this is the first "metanalytical" thread I can remember of, and it's raised a whole caleidoscope of opinions without turning into a fight. I think this is the most important thing here.
Now, I will offer my opinion as well.
I think it would be very hard to really improve that thread (or any other thread) here. I'm quite sure it's by far the longest thread on BF (3,5 million views and almost 50k replies). Anything can be improved in this world...but it's unfair to defy facts.
Replying to a post with ten pictures quoting all of them could be avoided.
Quoting one pic so that anyone knows what knife you're talking about is fair enough for me (that's what I've always done at least).
But in the end it's just my opinion. Honestly, I don't see a huge issue, but there's nothing wrong in discussing anything and expressing opinions :)

Reading this thread has made me think through my actions (which is scary in itself!).

Mostly all I'm trying to do when I quote someone's post is give a little recognition, not necessarily re-post their image. For me the reason behind re-posting their image is because it helps that person quickly recognise and pick up your praise. Whereas (and I'm guilty of this) you can sometimes miss the fact that someone has expressed a liking for your post if they haven't attached your image. I'm not talking about scratching around for praise but I feel a little bit bad if someone has taken the time to say something nice about my post and I've missed the opportunity to say thanks:)

I guess what would help is if, as well as posting a comment you could tick a little rep box on that persons post for example. then that person would see those rep's on their account when they next logged in and respond if they wished.

Just thoughts....

This thread was a good read for me, a timely subject, and friendly reminder is what I choose to take from it all.

Sam, I am a member on another forum where the "like" box is in play. At first I really didn't take to this function, but after a short while, it became apparent what a great tool it can be to keep track of any responses to posts you may wish to return the favor on. by clicking a like to the post you choose to compliment or discuss, that poster gets a little notification that activity may have occurred that they wish to respond to. The flip side is, someone can just like a post, without comment or further addition to the discussion at hand, yet let the poster have some affirmation for a positive contribution.

There is another forum that I go to often. One can like or thank a poster for their post. It displays your name as thanking them. You can acknowledge the contribution(s) of a poster without adding another post. Even with this forum tool, you still see people quoting and acknowledging the poster with new posts. But I'm sure that it cuts down on the number of posted reply s .
Just a thought.

I know nothing about forum software, but it would be cool if a quoted picture posted at a smaller, say 50% size. Partly to save bandwidth, and partly to make things less confusing when scrolling through a post. I can sympathize with those who have bandwidth issues, but I also like to see which knife is being commented on, and I'm usually too lazy to go scrolling backwards to see.

I read this in the guidelines when I first started frequenting this subforum and thought it made perfect sense. That's not to say I've never quoted an image; just try to limit it to those occasions when truly needed for context.
