New Umnumzaan Pivot

This is what I thought when I saw the pictures, it looks like they updated one of the pictures and used the old picture for the other side. I would CRK would make a knife with a different pivot on either side.
I second that.
Clearly the pictures are not a good representation of the knife.
You can see clearly that the picture with the old pivot also shows the old jimping.
On the other hand the picture with new style pivot shows the new jimping "sebenza like".
I say put a little faith in Chris reeve's work...:D

I think a regular pivot on both sides - like the one in the picture, rather than the big one with the holes would be classier looking. Less clutttered & more CRK'ish - but that's just me?

I'm with you on that one. The sebenza 25 pivot on the Umnum looks better.... but as you said both sides of course. This one side different than the other stuff looks pretty bad.

Right on! I say lose the Lionsteel looking pivot completely and replace it with that nice, beefy, clean looking new Sebenza 25 pivot & screws! :D

There's a few thing in life you just don't mess with:
-Chuck Norris
-Superman
-Big Bad Leroy Brown
-The Almighty Zaan

I just don't get what will be the difference now in owning the umnum vs the 25?

The only real differences now with the two will just be the blades and the scales, correct? That was the appeal of the zaan to me in that it was a whole other design/knife than the sebby. You couldn't argue that the zaan wasn't TOTALLY different. Now there's hardly no differences between the two.

Why not just do a bunch of sprint runs on blades and keep one handle/scale profile? Why actually put the effort into another knife that is very similar.

Maybe someone can enlighten me:o

Different grinds too--the near-flat or whatever they're calling it on the 25 and the hollow of the Zaan

But yeah, they're pretty close now.

I always looked at CRK folders as exercises in lock design, first and foremost. The Sebenza uses the framelock and a traditional stop pin, the Umnumzaan uses thumb studs to eliminate the extra "standoff", the Mnandi uses a liner lock, and the Ti-Lock uses its own crazy system. That's the biggest selling point, from my bystanding eyes.

However, I am with you 100% that the Umnumzaan should remain entirely different, just like every other folder CRK makes should maintain its defining features. I don't care for the homogenized approach we're seeing right now, but at least the quality will still be there.

Hopefully.

the Mnandi uses a liner lock...
Actually the Mnandi is a frame lock with a stop pin. The inlay "bridging" over the lock bar gives the impression that it is a liner lock.

I have come close to purchasing an Umnumzaan a few times but something else has always become available. With regards to the pivot, I prefer the look of the old pivot.

Glass break? I know the blade thickness was different but I have not looked in a while. I also know the 25 I have seen go for 2500 since there are only 25 of them being called prototypes. That's a hefty price tag!!!!

We have just lived through a little bit of evolution, the ceramic ball is superior to the Ti/blade tang interface we saw previously. The shape, size and materials are really all you have to play with out side of the lock type. I don't see that as a negative, they have a good design that works and now their running with. What's the probelm ?

Right you are. I guess the nail nick makes it different enough. The opening gesture is unique on each CRK, right? I suppose that's also something to consider in the face of all this.

No doubt that the ceramic ball/ lockbar is superior...that never was a problem(to me)...the problem seems to be that the zaan is losing its identity. I guess you can compare the way people seem to "favor" the regular sebenza over the 21...lots of people yearn for what made the regular great(all IMO of course):D

I agree absolutely. When I read the thread about CRK changing the jimping on the Umnumzaan, I scrambled for weeks to get an example with the original style. Ended up buying two, one with the stamped overtravel stop and one with no stop. Both are otherwise very recent, with the flared lock and S35VN. Will be looking for a fully original model in the future.

Just glad I acted when I did.

Of course, that's part of the beauty of this hobby -- always something to look forward to and BACK to! And I have no doubt the newer Umnum iterations will grow on me.

Well, after reading this I quick ordered a 'Zaan from a vendor that had an original pictured. I got a new one however, and now I'm between a rock & hardplace. I can tell you now, that the pivot is the same on both sides. I wanted the old style though. But this will no doubt work. The jimping is another thing, it is a little more aggressive than the Sebby, but not like the old style. I think I'll give this a tryout, I do like the feel of it, and damn, the lock up is absolute perfection. I got used to the 21, and ended up liking it, this one will most likely be the same:

I am going to guess (but can anyone confirm or correct?) that the pivot diameter itself is the same, but the flange is smaller. If that's true, it's just appearances...if you can say "just"... :(

I can only agree with that, but progress is progress and that is always good to see. :)

What dealer did you buy the umnum from?
I just got one today and hope it has the new style.
I like the clean look..:)
Thanks!!
