New ZT0550 Thread !!!

Here's what I did, and it went back together fine.

Take the screws out of the handle (scale side only).

Open the blade.

Remove pivot screw.

Slide G10 off.

Slide liner off.

Lift blade from pivot.

Then just reverse it for assembly, piece of cake. I did put the handle screws in before the pivot screw though. Just snuged them up real well (handle screws) then put the pivot screw in loosely, closed the blade then tightened until it was centered, and had the desired tension.

There you go then.

My problem was that I didn't open the blade after I took the other screws off.

Thanks.

A couple comparisons to a 0350...

And, sadly, the only reasons I will have to be sending it back...

And more importantly...

I can fix the liner myself, but the marks on the thumbstud go all the way around and are very noticeable.
Sucks because I suspect they will have to replace the knife and this one has a scary sharp edge is perfectly centered and locks up like a vault.
Hopefully the one I get back is the same.

The only pictures I have with me comparing it to my 0302 are these on-end shots...

It is an excellent design.

Well, well, look what showed up.

First off, I’m calling 100% bullshit on your statement of “I had somehow missed this knife”.

A F**king blind man could NOT have “missed” ANY OF THE NUMEROUS THREADS on this knife that have received record amounts of views, posts AND been at the top of the boards since July! You are a habitual lurker and/or poster on these boards nearly every day. And, just so there’s no misinterpretation, I’m calling you a LIAR (go ahead and hit the “report post” like you LOVE to do.) And why is that important? Simply because you are FEIGNING INTEREST in this knife so that you can stir up shit and get on your moral high horse to “teach”. Pure and simple. What really gets me is how you flaunt that hypocritical signature which makes this offense so much more egregious. Since our last encounter I have found out that you have a well known track history/M.O. of “coming to the rescue” (in your mind) when threads are not going well or you feel some kind of self-righteous indignation has been committed. Apparently I had you pegged from our previous encounter and during my very short time spent here I have received numerous emails about you and none of them were flattering. Apparently you have quite a number of people here that flat out hate you (their words) but choose not to say so publicly. From our last exchange you should know that I have no such qualms and speak plainly what’s on my mind!

Now we’re getting to your passive aggressive ways that you use to stir up shit while attempting to keep your hands clean so that you can appear to have a high ground and skirt moderation. There’s no doubt in my, or ANYONE ELSE'S mind that you were/are talking about ME. This is flat out BAITING and NAME CALLING on your part and anyone else to whom this applied would only feel compelled to respond. Once again, this is apparently your modus operandi and I’m your huckleberry.

Thomas had replied last night, after I had logged off I might add, and I was satisfied and appreciated his comments when I read them today. The thread was winding down and getting back on track but once again you feel the need to add comments like this...

Once again, you are not fooling anybody with that nonsense. You are just trying to make a point and EVERYONE KNOWS IT. Seeing as how you have effectively called out “Bearcut” in the posts above you have succeed in your BAITING. Being a “Christian” and taking such tactics is reprehensible. Nice “witness” you’ve got going there “teacher”. This is a perfect example of what PUTS PEOPLE OFF to Christianity and you are hereby rebuked!
Off your 'meds' again DD??

It would be hard to express to you how little I care what you think or have to say.... about anything.

You flatter yourself to think anything I had to say was aimed at you. Since "last time", I no longer read anything you post.. because it is worthless tripe.

And yeah, I hate to see someone kicked or piled on... when they are down or having a tough time. What I said in my post was my .02.. and if you don't like it... tough luck for you. ;)

I don't frequent this subforum, I found out about this knife yesterday on the ESEE Forum. This will be my first ZT... so don't consider me a "Fanboy" either. ;)

You are not the only one who has received emails after our last exchange DD. :) You may not be loved & revered as much as you seem to think either....

And yeah, I was trying to make a point.. good observation. A point that mistakes happen, and that many of the comments seemed over the top and that TW or anyone for that matter.....did not deserve the grief.

I also picked up a knife... before I found out today there were plenty left. So I can get a spare now also. :)

You come across as a sad human being DD..... ;)

This is directed,point-blank,no excuses at the following members:

Scott Neelan,xtonesterx,JTR357,Jroden5446,spiralarchitect,PG5768,mqqn,knifenut1013,atony, and perhaps a few I've missed...and you know who you are!

Please do me a favor & post a few pix that are entirely too dark,a few that are blurred from hand tremors,a few that are out of focus, maybe one or two that are over-exposed...or part of the subject cut off. ;)

Otherwise,I may never be able to post any of my pathetic photographic efforts here,as they all share at least two of the above-listed criteria...often more!

~Gnarly :D

Here's a couple of really pathetic scan jobs. Happy now? :p ;)

Although I don't expect any issues on the two I have coming (I'm on the KC list), did the blade centering come right back or did you have to do the "handlescrews/pivot screws" adjustment methord to obtain the centering again?

I'm not concerned about disassembly as I've done this a hundred times but I have found that some knives went back to center automatically while others needed a little extra care. The easy ones typically are Ti slabs on both sides in my experience. When a liner is involved is where I've had to work them a little bit.

And my only other source of angst is wondering when KC will have their shipment and mine will be on the way although I'm NOT looking forward to the $400+ bill when they ship! :)

Are you saying the centering is adjustable by simply adjusting the pivot on this knife? I have several like that.

Thanks for any replies :)

I got mine today. Paid Sunday night, shipped Monday, and arrived Wednesday traveling from Oregon to Florida. Not bad at all.

Mine is nearly perfect. Centered blade, G10 lines up with the liner perfectly, thumb studs hit the handle evenly all the way across, and the blade grind is centered and symmetrical (at least to my eye).

The only problem is the liner which is a little rough although it appears the edges along all the cuts are smooth. Some fine grit sandpaper and a trip into my brass tumbler for reloading should leave it perfect. A light layer of grease between the liner and G10 should keep any surface rust away even down here in humid Florida along the Gulf coast salt air. I might take some CLP and a blow dryer and see if a protective layer can be put on it although I don't think it is meant for that.

I still have 2 on order although I imagine they are probably delayed now and I might have to get another because my dad saw it and wants one. The gun bug has him much more than knives but he has one heck of a knife collection for someone who doesn't visit the forums as he lets me know when he likes one of mine and there are Birthdays, fathers day, Christmas, and weekdays. I have ZERO complaints which from the way this thread sounds (much of it coming from people who don't even have the knife in hand yet ) is very surprising as I was starting to think sunlight and a breeze would make it crumble apart in my hands.

Good job everyone, it's now time to find out how Elmax holds an edge. Anyone know how the edge holding compares to other alloys? And what hardness this is supposed to be at?

:thumbup::thumbup:

This is a very cool, well-built heavy-duty knife, no doubt. I love the overall design, especially the pointy point on a heavy blade. The handle gives the hand an excellent grip, and I'm assuming the steel is top knotch, although I haven't see it tested yet. But I wonder about a couple of the design features:

1) Why is there no relief cut into the scales to make releasing the lock easier? The Gayle Bradley is this way, too, and it makes one-handed operation difficult to impossible, depending on circumstances. I don't see the advantage.

2) Why is 410 steel used for the liners. 410 has roughly the corrosion resistance of D2, and it seems a more corrosion-resistant steel would be better for hard to clean places.

3) The titanium lock bar is massive, but the cutout is thin and the lock bar seems to angle in quite a ways to lock up the blade. It looks like angle focuses the lock resistance on that cut out, with the pressure vector coming at it from an angle, decreasing its strength.

Hi guys -

I am a little late to the game, but Flatlander1963 asked for some comparison shots to a 300 series ZT, so here are some group shots of the 551 with a 350, an Acies, Volt 3600, Speedform 3500, and a Spyderco M4 Military -

Oh you care. You sooo care!
It is painfully obvious for all to see and further illustrates your lack of honesty.
The solution to your pain is to repent but you have to be honest first and that’s obviously a problem for you.
I offered you a chance and gave you a golden opportunity.
Is that cross in you sig just for 'looks'?!
Think about it and confront your Pride.
I know it is going to be very difficult but you will have to do so and give account sooner or later.

Oh wait, you mentioned ‘meds’. How could I forget! Very telling choice of wording/spelling on your part. If you are truly suffering from a Personality Disorder, like I mentioned/suspected during our first encounter AND you are not under a doctor’s care, as you should be(!) you probably/actually “believe” everything you’ve written. Hmmm...

I guess the only solution is for everyone that gives a crap about you to keep you in their prayers. I tried/did my part to help you. Good luck/riddance.

(..more emails coming in for my support. From other forums/members! LMAO Thanks everybody. I really had no idea!)

What the heck, since we're talking comparison shots......

Here is a shot of some fine titanium framelocks, including the 0551:thumbup: I couldn't be happier with this knife!
