New ZT0550 Thread !!!

Heck I'm still waiting on my too come back from ZT. As soon as Dave has them I'll get mine. They should be good to go by then.

All that are waiting, me included, should rest assured that USPS will deliver the day after you leave town for the holidays.:D

My knife isn't fixed yet either, but I've got no one to blame but myself.
I have been too busy to get it wrapped back up and shipped out. Hopefully today.

I'd rather have it done right than fast, so take your time on mine Thomas.

Only took me 10 minutes to stick the liners on my buffing wheel and completely remove the rust, and only because I went through 2 different compounds to leave a high polish on it. Only thing worth nothing is that I managed to strip one of the screws on the pocket clip when switching to tip down carry. Interesting thing is that this is my second ZT in which this has happened, and this time around I made sure to put plenty of downward force when screwing.

I freaking hate the small torx screws <_<.

On the bright side the clip is secured tight and I shouldn't have any need to ever touch it again.

Agree! on the tiny Torx screws,Noctis.
Only time I've ever had to contact KAI before now was to request some replacement screws for my black Shallot...which arrived quickly...and free...and Cheryl even sent me a spare clip.
Lotsa scope mounts have gone to Torx over Allen screws...and someone said 'Torx is stronger and less likely to round-out'....
JMO: that's BS.
Again,JMO: Allen screws were originally designated as ' a Grade 8 fastener',IIRC.
And Torx screws are made of recycled Yugo bumpers.

By the way,I found this down on page 3.
Let's pick it up a few notches,knifevultures!

Well I've finially come up with a method on how I can open this knife. With the thick lock bar, I have trouble with were to place my fingers. So, I've started pinching with my middle finger and thumb (forward of the thumb stud) and pushing straight up to break the detent and then a quick swipe of the thumb on the thumb stud...slick as a whistle.

Is it me or is it this a common issue?

Probably just need a quality driver. Use Wiha.

I'm glad everyone else is so enamored with their customer service, but my patience is definitely wearing very thin.

Not necessary. I probably made it sound like a bigger deal than I should.

My torsion bar on my ZT0300 broke a couple weeks back and I contacted ZT CS. I got an email response the following day, saying they will be sending out a replacement torsion bar and it would take 5-10 days via USPS. It took closer to 10 days but I knew it was because of the holiday season coming up so I didn't sweat it. Finally came and they sent 2 torsion bars and a Kershaw T-Tool too. So my first hand experience with ZT CS is a positive one.

Back to the knife... I sure hope I get one. Dave (kershawguy) put me on the standby list for the ZT0551. I'm actually glad there was a bit of an "issue" on this sprint run selfishly speaking. That way when you nit-pickers cancel your orders, that will give me a better chance of snagging one. ;)

Has anyone got their knife back from after sending it in to get fixed/finished correctly? Post pics if you can.

I think it has indeed been a common issue. I fixed it by switching to tip-down carry instead of tip-up. Now my fingers rest on the clip instead of the lock bar. No problem opening it now.

I have no issue opening it (tip up)... it was tough at first but it broke in... that and I'm not a panzy.

:D

Thanx,knivesandguns!
Went to Wiha site and ordered Torx bits.
( Was pretty sure I needed T-6 & T-8 for Kershaw & ZT; got a pair of each.)
And remembered that the Burris Xtreme Scope Rings use T-10,so a pair of those.
I have a decent set of Irwins,in larger sizes.
Anyway, thanx! for the tip; no pun intended.

mine opens perfect. nice and smooth.

the way you have to open it is you have to position your thumb under the thumb stud and push straight up on the thumb stud instead of positioning your thumb on the right of it and pushing to the left.

Good stuff man, glad to hear that you're using XTR rings too :D

Alright, I like the new zt 0551 but do not have one, reason being: I do not like knives with different handle scales. Is there and 0551 with titanium handles on both sides? Or is it always gonna be g10 on one side, titanium on the other?

AFAIK no.

They're all G-10 on the non locking side and Ti on the locking side. You can always get an all Ti scale made for the knife, but I would assume it is going to be pretty darn heavy at that point.

I have read that suggestion before (maybe yours) but to be honest I don't find pushing straight out a natural hand position. It's not going to work for me.

That's OK, I have big hands and fingers are long enough to do the "pinch and push" method. It works pretty well and is how I open my TNT which is a much smaller knife.

I do like the 551 alot! But a flipper version or a all G10 with liner lock would work better for me.
