New ZT0550 Thread !!!

The 0551 is 100% manual - no A/O

I am not debating this knife's opening features with you. Apparently the NYC DA considers it
assisted if you only use one hand to open the knife. I will just quote the Knife Center: "As a company policy, the Knife Center does not ship one hand opening knives to New York State."

The 0551 can obviously be opened with one-hand, hence the KC will not ship. Per a news release earlier this year the NYC DA lumps knives like the 0551 in with gravity knives and switchblades. In NYC you must use two hands to open a knife!

Ironically I do not live in NYC, so back to my original question. Will any on-line dealer ship the ZT 0551 to a New York resident that does not live in the Big Apple?

Not likely. The policy is pretty much universal among dealers. However, perhaps buying the 0551 from individuals who choose to sell theirs might work:thumbup:.

The obvious solution is to move somewhere that doesn't have ridiculous knife laws.

I'll think you'll see it was Dave [kershawguy]that mentioned that.
And I am wondering the same thing. :D .. :)
See below.....

My mistake. Yes the question was aimed at Dave. Unfortunately, Dave contacted me last week and said he had a ZT0551 to ship to me but I had to turn it down due to Christmas expenses. So now I am really anxious for the ZT0551Blk. I am getting one of those not matter what. ;)

Does any one know of an on-line knife dealer that will sell the Zero Tolerance Model 0551 to individuals that live in Upstate, NY (zip 13901 if you are checking)? I DO NOT live in NYC, which do to the boneheaded DA, apparently has issues with assisted opening knives like the 0551.

I know that gpknives.com, Emerson, and the knifecenter.com with not sell this knife to any New York State resident. I am not sure what that is about.

I think that most laws for the State of New York cover all of the State, INCLUDING New York City. So whether you live in Manhatten, Buffalo, or Ithaca, no knives means no knives. It sucks. I'd find a friend in Jersey within driving distance and use their address for shipping

Whew...
Just read through every post in the old thread, and the new thread.
Took me a couple of days.
I laughed, I cried, etc etc...

I have one of these on pre-order, and am terribly excited to get one.

To Thomas W., man.. I do not envy you or your job. I do really appreciate you putting up with everything you do and making yourself available to all of us here on the forum.
Now, I finally get to own a Hinderer designed knife from a quality manufacturer. I have been waiting a long time to be able to say that.

Thanks to everyone at Kershaw/ZT and Rick Hinderer for bringing this knife to market, not to mention popping out a sprint run so we didn't have to wait on the Vanax model. I prefer stonewashed blades anyway.

Let me set something straight for everyone. I've posted this about a half dozen times by now.

The Manhattan D/A's jurisdiction does not reach beyond Manhattan and it's surrounding boroughs. NY state's knife laws are quite different from the laws of NYC. You can carry one hand opening knives, flippers, and A/O knives in the state of NY. If you have a fishing or hunting permit you can even carry an automatic knife as long as you are actually hunting or fishing. Many online dealers are not aware of the seperation between NYS and NYC for some reason so they just lump the two together and won't ship to NYS at all. To me this is bullshit and these dealers are not only losing potential customers, but customers that they already had as well. When you live outside of NYC your mail is not sorted within Manhattan or it's surrounding buroughs so shipping knives to anywhere outside of NYC should not be an issue.

I live in NYS, not NYC and I've written quite a few online dealers about their misconception without response from any of them. I won't even bother trying to order from these online dealers. Now I'm even noticing that some private sellers on the forums are starting to state in their posts that they won't ship to NYS. Those of us that live in NYS that are users/collectors need to set the record straight to these dealers as well as the individuals that won't ship to NYS for fear of prosecution. There is no chance of prosecution when shipping outside of Manhattan or it's surrounding buroughs. Because of all this nonsense I've mainly stuck to the forum exchanges to purchase the knives I am looking for. Not exactly the easiest thing to do when looking for something new and hot in the market.

Dave must be aware of this because he has never told me that he won't ship to me and I've ordered quite a few knives from him. Other online dealers must have done their homework as well because while they may not ship to NYC they will ship to NY state. When you are a dealer I would suggest that you do your homework because you may be risking losing multiple customers and a lot of money.

That information isn't TOO well known. However, I believe the dealers are simply adopting a "better safe than sorry" approach. While the DA has no jurisdiction outside of Manhattan, I also don't believe what he's currently doing is strictly legal either, so it's understandable that nobody wants to push their luck.

Guys, what the handle thickness on the 0551?
Im just wondering how it compares to Rick's knives. i know his XM-18 has 0.165" thick blade and a handle thickness of 0.515". the ZT0551 has a blade thickness of 0156" and a handle thickness of....(im guessing here, but i think it will be about 0.515 as well. [.167" Ti side +.184" G10 side + 156" blade thickness + X" both washers = 0.507"+X Handle thickness]) i just need a knife owner to verify the actual thickness please. Thanks!

I can't be absolutely certain until I get my XM-18 back, but I think the 0551 actually as thicker handles.

'Innocence is indeed a glorious thing;but, unfortunately,it doesn't keep well, and is easily lead astray.'

Quotation from Gnarly:

'Liking this knife better all the time; I am.'

Anyone know if the 550 will be stonewashed like the 551? or if it will be black coated with dlc?

According to Thomas on another thread there will be no DLC coating on the 0550. I believe he said Stonewashed finish.

I'm with Tony8179 100%. NYC is only 1 borough.

Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Staten Island, and the Bronx is where these ridiculous knife laws are in effect.
