New ZT0550 Thread !!!

Thomas

I ordered mine from my usual dealer, he said that his wholesaler has not received any 0500 yet
are they all out? should I worry?
thanks
Maxx

I thought I would chime in as I received a 0551 the other day. Due to the time of the year, I haven't had much time to truly mess around with it or even really use it yet as that will likely have to wait until after Christmas. I did have an opportunity to check it out pretty closely.

Fit and finish is really good, easily on par with any knife at this cost. The liners and every part is finished properly. There is a very "raw" feel to it in that it feels no nonsense and robust (not raw in the sense of poorly finished). The blade shape and grind is very nice and mine was very evenly ground and very sharp. My blade lock-up (near 50%) and centering was perfect. Mine was a little stiff I suppose, certainly not bad, but is very smooth. I have made no adjustments yet, right out of the box it was quite good. I was never sure what to make of the brick pattern G10 and felt if I didn't like it I would just do a custom scale. But, now having felt it and seen it in person, it is actually quite nice, it provides good grip with no sense of being too abrasive and the pattern is a nice chance of pace, very distinct.

If I made one criticism as this point, I would like it if the Ti slab was stonewashed or tumbled.

Hinderer Knives: I have always watched and read all the fascination with Hinderer knives and having never handled one in person, I was never sure what to make of them. Based on all the pictures and comments posted, I really liked the XM-18 but could never quite see spending that much on a knife. Now that I have handled the 0551, I will find a way to eventually purchase an XM-18.

Disclaimer and Comparison: I really like Spyderco products, I easily own more of that brand than all others combined by a factor of five. I have a ZT0350CB that I also really like and consider this 0551 similar overall but I like the 0551 even more. My Spydercos have very good fit and finish and I would put my 0551 on the same level. My most recent purchase, a para-military 2 with CF and S90V is one of my favorites. The 0551 is obviously quite different from the para-military but I would put this knife on a similar level but it is different in that it is so much more robust feeling, a workhorse perhaps compared to the para-military which makes me think more scalpel like.

Conclusion: This 0551 is easily worth the cost and is a very beefy folder in that it feels overbuilt but it isn't by any stretch clumsy or too porky. This was a very nice collaboration and despite a few hiccups and scrutiny along the way, a very well received knife. If you haven't bought or ordered one yet, I believe you owe it to yourself to try it out and judge it in person. I plan to buy a 0550 as well.

Regards,

Rich

I couldn't agree more. I just spent a couple of hours driving in the car and couldn't keep my hands off the ZT 0551. I must have flicked it open a hundred times. It's getting broken in nicely and is a real treat to hold. Anyone that likes a solid knife in their hand should get their paws on one. You will not be disappointed.

My second ZT/H 0551 #0397 got here last Saturday, thanks Dave.

Fit & finish on this one about as close to perfect as it could be also.
[The liner on the G-10 side had even been bead blasted.... ;) .. :D ... ]

Again, I will say; this is one impressive knife.......

I could rattle on and on about how it is impressive... but it has all been said countless times.
IMO, this knife is a "home run"!!! ... :)

Last night,next-to-eldest GrandSon came to visit, and wanted to show me his "first knife",as he called it.

It was a tiny worn Case XX two-blade,showing many actual miles.

He also showed me his first cut,on his left thumb.

So we talked briefly about knife safety, and I told him,"Elijah,if you use & collect sharp things, sooner or later, you're gonna get cut."

Then he asked about my knives, and I showed him.All of them.

His eyes were like saucers, when I pulled out the ZT/H 0551,last.

Bottom line: I spent over an hour in knifetalk with an eight-year-old.

Before his other GrandDad gave him that $5 Case, the only things that interested Elijah for more than 10 minutes was the computer,or those electronic babysitters known as Wii & Play Station.

Before he went home,I had learned some things about him I didn't know,or had missed along the way.

And learned a thing or two about myself.

Great story.

My son just turned 6 and he is always asking to see my knives. He knows how to identify a Spyderco from a Benchmade (or as he calls them "Butterflyco".)

His favorite thing to do is to have me hold my ZT 0301 and for him to hit the flipper. He jumps every time it thwacks open.

I can't wait til he's a little older and I can get him a knife of his own.

Howdy y'all.

Anyone around here know of a stocking dealer or person that has the 550/551 right now?

I can't read any more praise for this knife and not have one..... its killing me

BEknives, you wrote:

Your best bet is to contact Dave Anderson (aka kershawguy) at steelhead15@juno.com, and order one. He may still have some ZT 0551s in stock. I got on his short ZT 0551 pre-order list a week ago, and sent a check. He shipped the knife on Monday, and it arrived yesterday. This is my second ZT 0551. I got my first one from Dave as well. See: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=800010

The ZT 0550 has not yet been released.

1. Price is $200? (link above says two hundred..)

2. If I order one now, the rust issue has been handled?

3. Whats the difference between the 0550 and 0551?

Thanks much for the info... I emailed.

Its this damn disease I've contracted..... I just see a knife I want and have to have it.... as quickly as possible.

Thomas,

I ordered a couple of ZT0551 from a dealer who in turn gets his stock inventory from Blue Ridge knives. He told me that so far his distributor (Blue Ridge Knives) said that there is no news about the knives they sent back because of the liner rust issue. Is there a way for you to check when they will be shipped? I can hardly wait to get mine and start using them.

:(

1) $200 is correct.

2) Again you are correct. That issue was caught early on and only affected the very first ones released. It has been taken care of completely.

3) Go back to page 70 of this thread, starting at around post 1400 or so and all of your questions should be resolved.

once you guys made the waiting list (not the original waiting list but the one after the first batch shipped) how long did you have to wait before you were notified that it was your turn?

as soon as kershawguy reads your email or PM he'll reply and let you know. ;)

he notified me that i was on list almost instantly, which was impressive..my question is how long till you got your knife?

You live about 4 or 5 hours East of me so I'd say 3 to 4 days (tops) from the time he notifies you. If you pay by PP, Dave will usually enter your tracking number and PP sends you an email with it. I'm really not the one you should be asking but I generally get my knives from him in about 3 business days. :)

received my ZT 0551 today #399 !! I can't say anything that hasn't been posted. Just an AWSOME blade !! Thanks Dave !!
