New ZT0550 Thread !!!

I'm sorry if it's been covered in this HUGE thread already, or if I'm confused but the original prototypes for the zt0550 that I saw had a finger choil, has that been dropped? I'm totally new to Zero Tolerence knives, and Rick Hinderer but have just recently been able to handle a XM-18 and a few ZT knives, Both impressed me greatly. I am really excited about the 0550 so I just wanted to be aware if any changes have been made. Again if this a mix up on my part my apologizes.

Am I the only one that thinks the one on the bottom (older prototype) Looked much better and the newer one is kinda BLAH plain?

I don't know if you're the only one, but personally I much prefer the looks of the newer one. Even to the sprint run version.

I love the pattern they came up with for this one and am ecstatic that they lost the choil!

Awesome job Kershaw!

Don't know if you're the only one, but I like the new one much more. Removed the cheesy pommel (glass breaker? screw driver? both?), made the choil much smaller, added a very cool looking pattern to the G10...

Hate to be the one to point it out.. but am I the only one that isn't a fan of the big ZT logo on the knife? Just seems to make it look kind of cheapish, maybe if it were in a different font and not circled?

+1 to both.... Great job on this one.

As far as I am concerned... you are probably the only one that would think the ZT logo makes the knife "look" cheap.

But hey, you asked and; to each his own. .. :)

My, what an incredibly helpful post. I wish the logo was 4 times bigger and on the handles too. Make it happen Thomas.;)

Do you have one of these yet? The logo stands out a lot more in the pictures than it does on the actual knife. I don't think it takes away from the knife at all. Whatever you do, don't let that be a deal breaker for you. I can't stop carrying mine. I used to rotate my EDC blades every couple of days, but I can't seem to do it anymore since I got the ZT 0551. Love it!!!!!

Thrill is right it really pops in the picture but not in hand. The logo is done quite nicely IMO, but each to his own taste I suppose. ZT is a logo you can be proud to have on your blade. ;)

I got the chance to speak to the designer about this knife and he confirmed that he got rid of the choil as he felt the blade (the effective portion) was too short with the choil and the balance was good without it. He also confirmed he got rid of the "screwdriver" as he felt it really didn't look right/add anything (and that it wasn't intended to be a glass breaker per se).

In total, the designer was quite pleased with the final outcome (and this is saying something as he handles fabulous knives every day). My 0551 was the first production example the designer had handled (yes, ZT hadn't sent him one yet).

The logo is fine, I like the way it looks in person, it looks nice and is discrete without being loud/obnoxious.

I believe there will be future ZT/Hinderer collaborations (beyond the 0551 and 0550) and I for one am looking forward to them.

Regards,

Rich

Okay, here's a question I have not seen asked about the new prototype. Where's the lanyard hole? Sure hope there is going to be one. I doubt I am the only one that gets a lot of use from a lanyard hole. Preferably bigger than the hole on the ZT0350. Can barely put a lanyard through that one.

I think he may be referring to this picture of the proposed 0550. No lanyard hole; I didn't notice on the earlier post.

My guess is that that pic is just intended to be a demonstration of the new G10 pattern, not a perfect representation of the 0550. It wouldn't make much sense for them to remove the lanyard hole and the pocket clip holes on the 0550 (since, irrc, the 0550 is slated to be almost identical to the 0551 except for the steel used and the pattern on the G10 scale).

I would agree; you're probably right about that.

Yep, all that was in the thread where Rick aka "the designer" and Thomas posted that. I think it was around June of 2010. ;)
I swear I saw about a dozen picture of the knife in Rick's hands 6 months ago (ZT 0550 proto), basically it's teh same knife just a different steel and G10 pattern. Not sure what you mean by the above bolded part.

I am not sure what part you don't understand. When Rick was handling my knife, he said it was the first finished model he had handled since the prototype (which I believe still had the choil and screwdriver on the pommel as well as the black blade in Vanax and standard scale).

Does anyone know if there are any more 0551 models being produced and coming
out soon? Or are they all spoken for?
I cant believe I didnt get on this sooner. If I end up not getting one Ill be kicking my
self in the ass for the next year.:(
