New ZT0550!!!

It is possible that some of the concern is for the looks of it. I guess if I were to buy this knife and wanted it to be the ultimate in badassness I would want it to have a huge pivot. That way I could say that even the pivot was specially designed to... when showing it off.

And no, I am not simply being sarcastic. I do thing there is some, perhaps illogical, attraction to the large pivot on the ZT300 etc.

That's just it though.... the pivot on the ZT0300 isn't huge.... the nut is, but, the pivot is probably near the same size as that of the ZT550. The difference is in confirmation. The ZT300 has a nut and bolt..... the 550 has a tube and screw. The diameters are likely not too much different (give or take 1/32). I suspect that if both are properly hardened there would be little or no practical difference.

+1 I was thinking the exact same thing this morning spiralarchitect but I was too lazy to post it. Good post!

I'm sorry, I should have asked, why isn't the cutout on the outside, like it is on Rick Hinderer's other frame locking knives, like the XM-18? Is there a specific reason he changed it on this blade?

Great question ...I would guess it has something to do with the way KAI was set up to machine the lock, but, it may also be a function of the thickenss of the Ti Frame and the associated geometries.... I look forward to hearing an answer to this question from someone in the know..... FWIW, most Kershaw and ZT Frame Locks have the cut out on the outside.

Some of the folders that have the integal cutout on the outside may cause problems if the pocket clip is placed over the cutout. I've got some Striders that are difficult to remove from my back pocket. The lip of the pants pocket seems to get caught in that area under the clip.
I'm not saying thats the reason for moving the cutout to the inside. Maybe it simply looks better.

Pretty much my point. I think the difference is really only cosmetic appeal with little actual performance change. That said, I still like the looks better (which I am having difficulty figuring out why, seems like putting a cow print seat cushion covers on a Ferrari).

What does that mean? :)

I would say the final product will be able to be seen when it's finished up. :)

That makes sense. Thomas are there two offerings? I know one was described in Elmax but not much has been mentioned for a long time about the original Vanax 35 model.

Will the Vanax come 2nd or has it been scrapped in favor of the Elmax steel? I'm sorry if this has been addressed and I missed or forgot about the Vanax blade model. I don't mean to waste your time. Thanks. :)

seems a bit blown out of proportion...
the cutout on the inside allows for a much cleaner look in my opinion, but even if it were on the outside i dont think it would THAT much of an aesthetic flaw.

what was said about ease of removal from the pocket makes perfect sense though, ive experienced the same issue with other knives.
i hope disassembly wont be an issue regarding the warranty, as id like to torch the frame to get a rainbow effect...or does anyone know where it can be sent to be stonewashed like the frames of the XM-18's?

Zt300's bolt is solid. 550 is a tube and screw. From my experience in shearing metal (i had a phase where I was experimenting a heckuvalot) it does make some difference. Any mechanical engineers out there to clear the issue?

Still both are more than adequate. I cannot forsee the pivot pin shearing off under use or batoning (disclaimer: do not baton folders blah blah....). Like no difference between using a shotgun or a cannon to kill a bird, both are overkill anyways.

Like I said... my antecdotal experience would lead me to believe that there is little or no practical difference... Any way you slice it a ZT (let alone one designed by Hinderer) will not be inferior to any other hard use folder on the market...ZT0300 included. ZT has made their bones by putting a product that law enforcement and the military can trust in their hands. There is no way that they will jeopardize the standing that they have fought hard to gain by putting a knife out there with a weak pivot.

This thread is too fricking long...... Thomas, we need this knife, so, we can quit talking about it and start banging on it....:p:D
