Also just one other easy design difference with both the XM-18 and the 0300 series is the way the hand fits farther up on the handle toward the blade...put both side by side and you will see this...This design is a departure from the XM-18 easily...when these hit the market you will definitly see and feel the difference...How do I know?? I designed and make the XM-18 and I designed this knife...Oh and another is the Spanto blade I have on my XM-18...:)...0300 doesnt have it.....In a nutshell...of course this knife has elements of my XM-18 in it..I designed both...however this is a different bird all together...again, when these hit the streets and you all have a opportunity to handle them side by side..you will see my point! Thanks!

Yeah It does look like a production XM-18 which is good because the availability on the XM-18 SUCKS! But then it's not anyones fault....it's the perfect folder.

We both agree then.

The 055X doesn't have spanto either unfortunately.

This is exciting news. The Spanto blade definitely intrigues me.

So are we looking at 3 variations?:D

This might sound controversial, but the 0300 was already a production XM-18ish knife in my mind. It always had more in common with the hinderer designs then the strider designs IMO. I'm not bashing the 055X, I just wish it had more to offer pre-existing 030X owners in terms of innovation and resemblance

When ever I stare at my 0301 from this angle, it's hard not to mistake it for a XM...

What does the 030X have in common with the XM designs?

1-S30v blade
2-G10 scale
3-Framelock
4-Hinderer stabilizer
5-Flipper
6-Metal liner on G10 side
7-Thumb stud blade stop
8-Blade stop contacts both sides of the handle
9-Framelock cutout on outside

What does the 055X have in common with the XM designs?

1-G10 scale
2-Framelock
3-Hinderer stabilizer
4-Thumb stud blade stop
5-Blade stop when closed
6-Esthetically more similar looking, incl. blade grind

I will probly end up buying a 055X, but it's pretty pointless to own both a 0300 and a 0550, probably end up keeping just one. These two knives will really be duking it out in terms of sales. In fact, they will probably end up cannibalizing each other's sales. ZT will have a firebird vs camero scenario on their hands pretty soon. But the new hinderer, given its obvious appeal and hype will probably be crowned the victor.

I would also disagree. I might not understand your post but, I was under the impression that the 300/301/302 were Strider/Onion designed. Last time I checked, SnGs & XM-18s don't look anything alike. You look at a XM-18 and a ZT301 and see similar design elemets?
Many companies use the Hinderer stabilizer (Lionsteel SR1 for example). Many companies also use S30V, G10/Ti combinations for handles, etc. From the time I've spent here and on other forums is people around here really don't need a reason to buy another knife. I seriously cannot see how someone can reach the conclusion that these 2 knives will create a problem for sales (one will bury the other), and I am trying to understand. So how or why is it pointless for people to buy/own/carry both? Variety is a good thing, some people want to have a couple solid folders, others want all kinds of models and variants that a company makes.

I'll have to disagree with you there. Not all XM-18s had flippers and many didn't have S30V.

I think the 0550/1 perfectly represents Rick's willingness to experiment with different steels and designs.

Good on you, Rick and Thomas.

MoreToasties and RevDevil hit the nail on the head. Until you can hold each knife and actually compare ergos, any comparison is premature. Just because they are made out of the same materials by the same company doesn't mean they are pretty much the same knife.

Wait 'til the 055X series :D knives come out, compare them to the 030X and 0350 knives, and then tell us what you think. And if you still only want one you can find plenty of folks here that'll take the other one off your hands.;)

Guess I need to go make more money so I can afford every variation that comes out!

I don't think it looks like a XM-18 at all, now his Camp Knife definitely. Eiter way it is going to be out of this world.

Hey can I throw out an idea for a Ti scale on it. If not how about one for my 3.5'' XM-18 c'mon Rick.:D
