So basically, since they're both ZT, they're both framelocks, have the same thumb stud method for a blade stop, they're basically the same knife ?

awesome

As far as I'm catching up, Thomas has said that the Vanax (2nd run) will possibly have different materials in the backspacer. Of course the 2 steels are different and are both excellent from what little research I've done. :)

They can take as long as they want, my wallet is screaming STOP on knives for 2010. Don't stone me for adding that. :D

. Will the 55X be available in a combo edge?
No combo edges will be offered as of today.

Also, will the tip strength of the 55X be comparable to the 300 series, or will it be ground thinner and pointier?
I believe the tip will be more on the thicker side.
Are you planning on prototyping the current design?

Or straight to production in a couple months?
We'll go straight to production, no additional proto's necessary from here on out.

So does that mean they'll hit the street by the end of this year or is it still 2011?

Thanks for the response! On a related note, would the act of having a portion of the blade serrated, by a professional grinder, void ZT warranty?

I believe you would be on your own concerning warranty after a mod like that. You have to remember that it would be pretty difficult to grind in serrations without hurting the heat treat on the blade, unless of course it was done completely by hand with files, but that would be quite a task on a hardened blade. Either way, I think you would void the warranty.

I'm not sure you can blanketly say that. I've had 3 knives professionally serrated, one of which, was a Blade-Tech PH Magnum, which I sent to Mikey Vellekamp, and he personally added serrations using a powered wheel. (he did an excellent job, btw.)

Anyway, I'd really like Thomas to weigh in on this subject. As a guy who's spent the last couple of years as a member of the church of the combo-edge, I'd really like to see if I have that option with the 55X series. My, apologies that this post was moderately off-topic.

As far as I know every folder blade from all manufacturers is serrated after heat treat. And all are done on powered equipment too!

Thomas is traveling....pretty sure he will get to this when he has time.

Tell you what....he will be in SLC next week for The Outdoor Retailer show....pony up some $$ and bust his chops in person....tall guy, red hair, really likes questions, hates sarcasm.

What do you think, SLC....do you think an after production modification like this would void a warranty?

I do, and cannot even fathom the mindset that would bring that up as a question.

+1 Agreed

Off topic- Kohai999, did you get promoted since the last time I PM'ed you regarding Iaijutsu and FMA - which you probably don't recall? :)

I do recall, and no have not been promoted....probably won't be..nidan suits just fine..the higher you go after shodan, the more responsibility you bear/politics you have to endure....there is enough of that in my "regular" life.

I don't know dude, harsh words indeed... my preference would be for someone at Kershaw to do it, if possible, while maintaining warranty coverage...

Now, back to the topic at hand...
More pics!
Spanto...

Anything else?

Fair enough. Like I said, I could be wrong. I just know that I've seen lots of advice concerning aftermarket mods to blades in regards to keeping the temp low. The blade heats up too much for too long and heat treat can suffer. As long as it's an experienced blade worker, maybe it's fine.

You already outed Mikey doing this for you....one thing I can guarantee is that Kershaw/Kai USA doesn't want regular requests for non-catalog modifications to knives, and you have shown yourself to lack discretion.

Do it yourself, and if you bust the blade somehow, realize that you will have to purchase at least a new blade. The very concept that you are somehow entitled to this is absolutely astounding. You cannot have everything you want. Get over it....this is not harshness, this is honesty....if you want harshness, step over to W&C.;)
