Not a Liner.

She's a Titanium framelock with G10 on the other side....

I lightened up these photos posted by Thomas.

I like the look and design but I agree with Benny-X the lock bar cutout does look awful thin and a 4' blade would be very nice.

Maybe that version will be next.

Are people seriously worried about frame lock failures on this knife? Without having even had it in hand?

That picture posted earlier, from what I saw, was of someone batoning wood. It's also worth noting that the lock may have broken at the cutout, but the lock itself still held the blade in place. So even in case of failure under extreme stress, the lock does exactly what it's designed to do.

I dunno about everyone else, but I'm perfect willing to put my faith in Rick Hinderer's design and ZT/Kai's manufacturing.

Don't get bent out of shape over an opinion. I like the design I just went back through and read the thread where Thomas W. stated that this is only a prototype and that the lock cutout would be thoroughly tested.

But yes it is my opinion that it has the appearance of being to thin. I will gladly wait for those that have full confidence in the design to prove me wrong, which does not bother me as I am married and am always wrong anyway, before I purchase one.

The deal breaker for me is the 3.25" blade I prefer 3.75 to 4" on a heavy duty knife.

Overall I like the knife design and symmetry.

I don't see anyone or anything bent out of shape here (other than that knife earlier *rimshot*). I've just seen the anti-framelock rants quite a bit, most of them centered around using that picture as evidence. How is a frame lock supposed to stand up to something liner locks fail at for the most part as well? But maybe I'm the one who's wrong. Either way, my apologies if I came across as rude.

I dunno about anyone else, but from the angle of that prototype pic, I couldn't even begin to tell how big the cutout is. It's an awful angle for looking at that sort of thing. I do hope it's thicker that it looks, and I'm sure it will be in production.

I do agree that a little larger blade would be nice, around 3 3/4" or so. Too much bigger and you start getting into "why didn't I just get a fixed blade?" territory IMO.

The 3.25" blade is not a deal breaker for me. I can live with the shorter blade seeing as how I will be mainly using it for EDC tasks, and not zombie slaying or taking it into combat.

For me, I would be more likely to pass if it had a recurved blade, or was as portly as it's ZT0300 cousins....

Excellent post, Scott! Exactly what I was thinking.

I don't have the slightest bit of concern when it comes to this beast. From what I have seen and heard(From very reliable sources;)), this knife should be able to handle whatever I can throw at it and then some.

Are we serious a 3.25 inch blade......FAIL! Such a nice looking knife too, oh well. Usually knife laws are 3" or 4" I don't see why you'd bend a 3" rule for .25 more.....push it for 3.8-4 inch. That was REALLY disappointing. Oh well looks like I'll still have to hold out and buy a 0350, though the weights been holding me back for so long...

Ummmm...the 0350 has...wait for it...a 3.25 inch blade! So your knife-fu is also FAIL!

Wow!

This knife seems to be exactly what we’ve been asking for. A ZT Ti Frame Lock, smaller then the 300 series and a supremely usable re-curve free blade shape. The fact that it’s a collaboration with one of the hottest makers is just a bonus.

Between a of the new stuff from ZT, all the new stuff coming from Spyderco…well its gonna be an expensive year. Assuming it really will be offered with an honest to goodness stone washed blade the 550 is at the top of my “must buy” list.

I had the opportunity to actually handle the proto at the Blade Show ...this design is definitely a Hinderer Design. Built to handle heavy cutting and anything else you throw at it. Very Solid Build !!!

Weight wise ...not bad. It looks heavier than it really is. It has that balance of not to heavy and not to light. Comfortable in hand and get a very good purchase on it for grip.

The back feature is a glass breaker IIRC. Rick is a firefighter and I believe he makes a design with first responders in mind.

The cut out everyone is concerned about ...actually shouldn't be that big of a concern. The cut out isn't as thin as it looks in the pics and if so ...that shouldn't be an issue since the "over travel pin" is in place.

This is definitely a must have from ZT. I can say that ZT did the design close to what Rick wanted and worked real close with Rick to make sure that happened. This will be a HUGE seller for ZT . Take Good Care and Be Safe Always.

Glad you mentioned the “Overtravel pin”.
However, some idiots can destroy anything.
Look at the photo of the bent lock bar again.
Stupid trumps engineering.

I really like this knife and own some ZT's and a Hinderer but there is 1 thing I don't get.
Why make a 5mm or something like that lockbar and then mill it down to 1mm so that it can bend over.Maybe 2 or 3mm were possible.

I'm afraid something like this might happen:

You haven't seen this yet?!?

While I don't disagree with your statements, and with all due respect to the knife in the image, that knife ain't no ZT. :D

I think this board has discussed (in tremendous detail) most every locking mechanism and the strength/weaknesses that are associated with each. I'll say that if you can get an epic fail going with the 0550 you're doing something that no folding knife should be exposed to.
