Newbie collaboration knife?

Hey Icky, would it be a good idea to put the final drawings on Post #1 so that we can find them easily for reference purposes?...AND any other pertinent lists or dorkumentation as well. :)

Good Idea, but instead, I will put on Post #1 where all the most important posts are, so that people can go right to them. Don't have time to search the entire thread today to figure it out, but I'll get it done.

I haven't had a chance to do this yet. Honest, I'll get to it eventually.

Slacker....you'd think you had a real job or something! :D Have fun in Sacramento. I grew up about 4 hours from there in Susanville, CA.

Susanville? What kind of sissy name is that for a hometown? :p

Susanville  It's got an anvil in it, musn't be too sissy if it's got that.:D:thumbup::cool:

(weird thing is I thought the same thing Scott but didn't say anything about it :) )

Yea, it is kind of a wussy name. Named after Peter Lassen's daughter, Susan. He was apparently the frontierman that laid claim to the area (it's located in Lassen County). There's your history lesson for the day :D

Actually, I was in Susanville today on my way through. I was also in Chester at Collins Pines Sawmill. I had lunch at the Knotbumper restaurant. I'm sure that you're probably familiar with that restaurant.

It's a very nice area. I loved it up there. Lots of deep snow there right now.

Nope, don't know the Knotbumper, do know Chester though. Have a good tour of my old homeland!

Hello Joe,

Any update on the forging? Looking forward to starting the grind. Let me know if you need my address for shipping. Thanks!

Eric

Snowed in on one Tuesday, wife had a conference the Tuesday after that... I'm feeling like I'm a big letdown here. Tuesdays are the MABA (Michigan Artist Blacksmith Assn) Open Forge Night, and I need that dang guillotine fuller. :(
Bumpity Bump!

Any new news folks?

-d

I'm here....lol. Sorry. I had no idea that it would be so freakin' hard to get some propane brought to my shop.. Gonna start forging using my old grill bottles tomorrow....sheesh:D

Any update?
YES!

The hawk is on the way to Knife Head as we speak

I really bit off more than I could chew on this hawk. Forging knives, I'm all over it... forging hawks, I'm pretty wet behind the ears. So I had to borrow tools, recruit a striker, etc etc.

I left it extra meaty to grind down, especially around the eye. I figured there ought to be some margin of error for adjusting centering.

The damascus performed fabulously, Deker, and it's going to be gorgeous, no doubt about it (you can see the layers when you pull the billet out of the fire- don't know whether it's different cooling or different oxidizing in the air, or both). I think I jiggered it up a little right at the very end. There's a bit of a start of a crack at the base of the spike. Not the damascus' fault- I think I tried to straighten it too cool. I hope it grinds out! :o
