NEWBIE KITH "I'm ready" and photo thread

The simplest thing is to leave the maker the choice.

This is my feelings exactly! The MAKER should be the one to choose which KITH he want his knife in. I reread this thread again and if I missed it, I'm truly sorry, but it seemed like others wanted this knife moved to the Christmas KITH.

I personally don't care where it ends up, as long as the Maker makes the decision. It's as good or better IMHO than some in the Christmas KITH, but it ain't my knife or anyone's other than the Makers. Again, if it was his decision, I apologize for my post, just seemed like it wasn't.

My apologies to R Rock if my post above seemed like it was aimed at you, because it wasn't. You actually inspire me to work a little harder at my KITH blade. You're obviously very talented and I look forward to seeing more of your work in the future.

Why??? Steve entered this KITH because he considers himself a newbie. He's been a member of bladeforums for less than 2 years. He made a great looking knife. Is it good enough to be in the other KITH, YES! Is it in the spirit of the KITH for "others" to suggest that it is too good for this KITH? I sure hope not. If it is, then that makes this KITH the "Lesser Knife KITH" and not a "Newbie KITH". In which case, someone judged mine, Geek, Matt, Jon, Husker, and Remy's knives to not be good enough for the other KITH. I find that very insulting. I received a Christmas KITH knife last year and my entry this year is every bit as good as the knife I received last year. I entered it in the newbie KITH because I am still a newbie, not because I didn't think it was good enough for the other KITH. For "others" to suggest that a knife is too good implies that a knife can be "not good enough" and I won't believe that that is the spirit of the KITH.

Unky and I were advised not to enter two KITHs because it wasn't in the spirit. But it is in the spirit to take a great knife away from the newbies? I can't be the only one that sees something wrong here.

OK. first of all, I was the one who suggested that he move. It is my fault. no one from the Christmas KITH or outside of it influenced my decision. I was the one who suggested it.

When I suggest that he be moved, I was considering that he has put a tremendous amount of work into his knife. matching up the liners between the bolster and the handle and polishing out the hamon is a lot of work, and I decided that he deserved a chance at knives that are. I will not speak for everyone, but I know that my knife is not up to the Christmas kith. it just isn't at the same level. I was using that as a reference point and made a mistake. I mean no offense to anyone. now, here is my response to the earlier posts.

Zaph: The fact that he considers himself a newbie does not make him a newbie. similarly, the amount of time that someone has been a member of BF does not matter at all. it just doesn't. When I suggested that he moves, it was not becuase I considered anyone's knife here to be a lesser knife, but instead I saw a higher level of form as well as a very functional knife. are any of the knives here "lesser" becuase they won't work as well as a knife? no. I have no doubt that they will all serve well for longer than we are alive. however, he has taken the level of finish to the next level with the extra things that add complexity and difficulty.

as to you entering 2 kiths, you are either a newbie, or you aren't. saying you are both doesn't really work.

If anyone is offended by this, feel free to talk to me by e-mail and I will be happy to talk to you.

the last thing I will say about this is that my only motivation for this was that I saw a knife with excellent form as well as excellent function, and, after comparing with the entries in the Christmas KITH, I saw his entry as closer to theirs than ours. I was not judging you or thinking that the other knives were not good enough. I am sorry if I offended anyone.

Since my name was mentioned about entering both KITHs I just wanted to state why I was considering it. I was and still am very against the separate KITHs because I would be just as happy to get a knife from a well know established maker as I would be from a new maker, as long as they both did their best on the knife entered. If there had only been one KITH none of this would have came up, but the powers that be have their reasons for the separate KITHS and I understand their point of view, and accept it.

After seeing the knife that caused this I have to say that if people had knew what he was capable of, he would have been urged to enter the Christmas KITH. The work that was put into the knife and the end result is for lack of better words, jaw dropping:eek: Now being that you were the one that came up with the idea of the Newbie KITH, and I commend you on that, I do feel that you and Steve together have the right to ask for something to be moved and that decision is up to you Steve and Stacey, and no one else.

OK, guys.... lets all take a breath.

I contacted R.Rock and asked him if he wanted his knife moved. He agreed. It was not moved without his consent.
Geek was the one who made the initial contact, and it was a joint decision of all three parties.

I'm sorry about the hurt feelings about the two KITHs, but that was a result of folks wanting to participate when they were on knife one or two. As said in the early posts, there are a few who make number one or two and are far beyond the number 100 or others.
The initial info stated that if one was in doubt, he should enter the Newbie KITH, and if the results were superb, move to the Christmas KITH.

Lets not make Rock feel bad about making a superior knife.

Next year we will have one KITH, and deal with the problems differently. But, for now, lets finish what we have.

Now, let's finish those knives and get ready to receive your GIFT from the maker who draws your name.

Beautifull knife R. Chavez, love the design, TILLER very nice piece..PORTLAND! Glad to hear that there will only be one KITH next year! Ive put a K.I.T.H of alot a people this year as gifts as i learn this wonderfull craft of knifemaking, and the one thing ive noticed that whether it was my 7th or 40th while they are differences in those knives, there was no difference in the recievers SMILE when they got my knife in the hand, as 1 big timer stated the KITH knife he recieved wasnt perfect but it is a treasure that will remain in his collection! GHaile

Tiller, that is one fine looking blade! In D2 no less!!! It should handle just about any job thrown at it and look good doing it!

nice, looks like a real tough and comfy one. That thing's gotta be just about indestructible too, modest length with 3/16 d2... I've seen weaker looking crow bars. :)

Thanks guys, yea its a stout knife for sure. I'm pretty excited about this exchange, there are some fine looking knives on here!

I'm ready 1/8" 1095 full convex grind and fiddle back maple. The blade has been cleaned up some since this pic.
