NEWBIE KITH "I'm ready" and photo thread

had a little problem with knife I had planned to use for kith, its a minor problem that time could fix so I opted to use a very similar one I had waiting to be finished..

handles are glued up now, tomorrow I will have it completed with finished sheath and pics........

I've had no time and I hate working with deadlines and all, somethings bound to happen when one procrastinates to the very end.... my fault no doubt, should've done it a month ago when I wasn't as swamped....

I'm ready...finally! Excuse my ghetto light box photo's. It was raining here today and is suppose to be nasty through Tue.

This was my 2nd attempt at this knife. The first attempt ended in a warped and twisted blade! This knife is made from Aldo's 3/16 1084. Blade is 4 1/4" from the tip to the plunge. It's about 10" overall.

It's either my 9th or 10th knife I've made so far and the first one with bolsters. I used a 1/4" copper pin on the bolsters and a piece of copper sheet metal for the spacer and brass pins in the scales (thought I had copper 1/8th pins, but they turned out to be 1/16th and I'd already drilled the holes!) It was my first time piecing together a knife handle and I'm not sure I did it right. Couldn't find a tutorial on it (although there are plenty on how to attach a bolster!)

Bolster is black canvas micarta and the scales are stabilized spalted maple. Black g-10 liner tops it off. There's some basic file work along the spine as well. Blade was belt finished with a Gator A45 then hand sanded at 400.

There's a few flaws, mainly a small gouge in the edge when I was trying to even up the bottom of the ricaso. Kinda forgot to watch everything at once...:) I'll start on the sheath tomorrow.

wow. that is really pretty.

Calvin, there isn't going to be a next year. we are going back to one kith. There have been a few problems and disputes that make 2 kiths a bit of a downer instead of a helpful thing.

Specs:

1/8" 440c 59.5Rc blade
1/32" Yellow fibre spacer
1/8" Ivory paper micarta handle
1/8" brass pins

9-1/4" OAL
4-1/2" blade

No sheath, and no case. I apologise. Next year, no misunderstandings.

I'll be honest with you guys, if it hadn't been for this KITH I'd still be procrastinating on getting the blade out to heat treat, let alone actually finishing a knife. With a deadline to finish this, I worked through it step by step and learned at least a dozen new things at each stage of the process. It's been amazing, and I can't wait to do another one!

Names are drawn tomorrow. A makers mark is not required. however, it is something to work on before you start doing this a lot. it is one of my highest priorities right now.

In a few days, these people will get the below email ( with recipient info inserted).

Here is your KITH recipient.

NAME AND INFO

Pack the knife securely in a mailing box ( USPS Medium Flat Rate Box or similar recommended) and ship it within five days ( if possible).

Send it with insurance and a tracking number ( delivery confirmation).

Email me the tracking number, so I can keep track of the knives and know when all are sent and delivered.
thegeek574@gmail.com

If mailing to an international destination, check with the post office about the special papers needed. Fill out the description as KNIFE, and the value as $100 ( or as you determine the value). Mark the item as GIFT.

Put in a letter or note about the knife and any thing that you would like the recipient to know is a good idea. Include your email and phone number if you wish, so he can contact you directly with comments and questions.
If you make certificates for your knives, put that in, too.

Thank you for participating in the 2011 Newbie KITH.

Start getting your knife ready to ship this week. If we all get them out soon, everyone should have a nice box under their tree....Yeah, Right, like any of these will sit around unopened for a week or two!

When the shipping info has been sent to all, I will put up a "WOO-HOO, My Newbie KITH Knife Has Arrived" thread.

When your knife comes, email the sender and me to let us know you have it, and post in the Woo-Hoo thread.

All the E-mails are out. Thanks all for the wonderful year. It has been both a learning experience and a lot of fun.

It'll probably be Thur. before I get to ship mine. On the 2nd sheath. Don't know why this surprises me since it took 2 tries to get this knife made! I guess there's a reason they call us Newbies!

Thank you again Steven for all the hard organizing work!

Dropped mine off at the PO 10 minutes ago!

Mine has gone. Australia Post say 3-12 business days, if it doesn't get held up in customs.

Thanks Steven for running this!

Matt
