Nick Wheeler Prototype Fighter. "Oh YEA "......

Thanks Peter I am truly enjoying this and I am very excited to see the finished knife

Alas I have been having to dress up at least a few days a week and have really begun to appreciate a size knife that I did not have much use for but from what I have gathered over the years doing these radical distal tapered blades really have a magical feel that is hard to explain. This knife is gonna prove u can pack some power in a pure fighter.

I was speaking to Nick tonight and he said it was weird he did not know what to expect but know that he has the proto coming together he understands my point now and is very pleased with the result

Batten down the hatches these little babies are gonna blow people's doors off :)

I wish u would tell the story of when u where here for a visit and u where handing your nephew knives from the case what his reaction was when he was handed a certain blade it tells it all.

Joe a 600 grit finish for Nick is like a 1000 or higher grit finish for most makers :)

True, but you KNOW how much that lad loves his magic abrasive pixie dust!!!:D

That is turning into a mighty fine looking piece.....Thanks for showing !

That sounds like a new adventure sport I'm going to have to try out...

Or an emergency patient transportation system...

This looks to be a ridiculously cool knife when it's finished! After Lorien's WIP thread and now this thread, I really want a Nick Wheeler knife lol. Stop encouraging me!

Nice to see somebody put a knife together without those goofy shoulders cut right into the side of the ricasso to camouflage a sloppy guard fit..
The last place you would want a stress riser.
Way to go, Nick.

love, Love, LOVE this blade!!!! Turquoise and black micarta would be hot on this baby if you wanted to fancy it up a touch. Plain old natural canvas micarta is a great choice for a natural workman's ambiance. The only thing I'd change to my preferences would be to lose the choil and have the sharpened edge go right to the guard. I seem to have difficulty getting stuff I'm cutting hung in choils when slicing. Did I miss if any of these will be available and approximate costs?

Thanks guys! :)

Karl- Yea, I've never liked the idea of cutting the shoulders all the way around either. I actually tried it a couple times and couldn't get my guards to fit as well, so that was all the more reason for me to not do it. I know a lot of guys swear by it, but I just don't care for it.

"Parawheeler" now that's funny :D

This project is very exciting for me to say the least. Being that nine of the 10 are already spoken for is just fantastic

I want to thank everyone for participating

Thanks so much

Here's some more pics Joe!

I really like how the knife feels. *I'm leaving more meat in the handle than I usually would, to help with the weight of the blade, and also retention with a snap cut.

I'm putting a hidden thread Cobry bolt in this one... it's very strong and I think the size will go well with the beefy-ness of this piece. :) *I drill and counter-bore the handle for it when in block form, but wait to epoxy it in so that I can just saw most of the bulk off and not deal with it building up heat during rough shaping. *:)

if I weren't so broke #10 would surely be mine

This project brings back some memories of way back, when I ordered a no frills L6 bladed/Micarta handle camp knife from Young Nickolai. Very similar to the fancy Koa/Damascus camp knife Nick recently made for Lorien, just not fancy, as I had every intention of using said camp knife. I still have the emails between Nick and I, where he quoted me a certain price for the belt finished L6 camp knife with brushed finished stainless guard and green canvas bead blasted micarta handle. Sounds good, right? Nick quoted me a very reasonable price for the knife. Then, in the very next sentence, Nick tells me that for $75 more, I can have a clay hardened W2 blade with Hamon(handrubbed to something like 26,600 grit with a baby seal's belly fur) and an exhibition grade ironwood handle. :D

Needless to say, I went for the bargain deal on the fancier version, and needless to say, the knife never got used by me. Hmmm; I wonder if he'd still be willing to honor the old price on the plain field grade, L6/micarta version? ;) :)

Danbo, we need to meet one day. I think we'd get along pretty good.

They will make great mini choppers :)

it's funny you say that. I have a particular project in mind that I think you'd be into Joe. We should talk
