No ZT for me sorry

Are you going to send it in to KAI for warranty work? I would be interested to hear how your CS experience goes.
That guy in the tape roll spine tap video said he was sending all 7 of his in. I don't know if ZT even considers spine whacking failure a defect. I'd be interested in seeing the weight hang load on them instead because that's more of the type force you'd exert stabbing the tip into an object.

I am thinking it would do as well as other framelocks since spine whacks are more about sudden impact shock absorption (or lack thereof) and not force/torque builtup.

5 whacks on the 1st ZT I could find, the one on me an 0393. Stopped at 5, figured that was enough.

I really like ZT, but have had issues with more than a few of their framelocks, also have had models where the threading in the drilled holes for screws had become stripped so they wouldn't even tighten securely and stay in even with loctite. It was a used knife so assuming person that last owned it stripped the threads, but could have came like that from factory. Who knows. It didn't bother me enough either to send in, with the locks or screws, sold them with issues listed. I like most of ZTs designs and have had many that were flawless.

As others have stated I would send back to seller you bought from if possible. I have never dealt with ZTs CS/warranty so couldnt say whether good or bad. Have heard mostly positive things tho and REALLY like they will do balde replacements for around $30 like benchmade.

I wouldn't let this bad experience turn you off completely to ZT. Butt your choice.

To me, the spine whack test is a little silly. I try to close the blade without disengaging the lock bar. It shouldn't close, and it most definitely shouldn't close easily!

1. I have four ZTs of various ages. 0550, 0566, 0562, and 0609, each picked up when they were first launched.

The closest thing I had to an issue was having to learn to fire the 0550. I thought the detent was too strong until I was advised to stack force to 11 o’clock, not 9 o’clock vs the pivot. That adjustment magically had it firing incredibly well. Clearly, user error.

2. I freely acknowledge that ZT has had past issues. Mostly, long ago. Specifically, 0560/0561 inconsistent detent issues, and the ELMAX heat treatment issue during early use. My own 0566 has performed great with ELMAX, and the 0562 came after the issue was resolved and clearly performs well.

3. When Demko and that crazy Russian on YouTube started torturing everything years ago, I had fun running around, spine whacking everything with my ZTs. Wood, soft stuff, metal, etc. I got reeeeaaaallllyyyy silly with the 0550. Even threw it spine-first at some stuff. No failure at all. Unsurprisingly, I’ve never run into any problems when using them as intended, either. I’ve used them heavily for years, and have nothing but great things to report.

4. I have to admit having 0 experiences with ZT customer service. I’ve never needed them. ‍

5. My lady made stuffed cabbage last night, and that $#!+ is delicious. This point has nothing to do with knives, but it’s the fifth bullet point, and people need to know how tasty that stuff is. I’m a health and fitness nut, and I am here to say: go try it.

6. The kangaroo with the ball is funny.

7. I love the 0609. Maybe too much. I’ve been browsing other knives for a few days, and nothing else is making me feel like I could bump it out of my pocket. It’s too good!

The only issue I've ever had with a ZT was with my 0909. I purchased a titanium pocket clip for it and removed the factory clip to install it.
Upon trying to install the titanium clip I found the threads on the screws were stripped.
I sent an email to ZT and exactly 7 days from that email new screws arrived.
Sometimes stuff happens. Even with the big boys.

... that crazy Russian on YouTube ...

Watching that one video about the ZT 0550 was a big part of why I ended up trying a ZT 0562. I've inadvertently whacked the back of the opened blade on my 562 quite a few times and the lock didn't budge once.

Granted it’s only been 4+ hours but she may have disappeared. If she does return and is sincere...

Yeah, this really needs to be in GBU. SpandexxHotWife SpandexxHotWife has documentation, she should post it up.

Still no return, and still no response to this... I guess we know how seriously to take it...

That was an awesome bullet point. As a guy who comes from a Ukranian family, stuffed cabbage is taken very seriously in my house...

Nothing against Kai / ZT but if you want the ultimate in spine whack proofing = Cold Steel with Tri-ad Lock ! :p

So the OP drops an unsubstantiated bomb about ZT, then disappears? No photos or documentation about the issue.

The ZT knives that I've owned have been rock solid, for years. Personally, my experience with this knife maker has been the exact opposite of the original narrative presented in this thread.

I have had over a dozen ZT knives and they have all been rock solid. If anything they and a few other recent production companies have help to raised the bar on quality both for themselves and for many custom makers. I don't really understand the OPs post, she seemed to imply her example had fallen to pieces.

I would think a spine whack (which I don’t do, but if I am suspicious of a lock I might do a few spine taps) is closer to a stab since the force of a stab is exerted all at once suddenly.

Or even closer to a hypothetical stab that you miss and end up hitting the spine instead.
