Pretty good discussion on Colorado's recent pot law. I ain't getting into it though. I stay out of the political and prac tac crap.

I know we've got some avid hikers here--The Trades and Dubz are always posting great trip photos. One of my new year's resolutions was to get out and hike more.

Can anyone share some good resources with good info on gear checklists/fitness/tips on planning hikes/safety precautions/navigations/whatever else you deem necessary?

REI.com or Adventure 16's website has excellent checklists. Another great one is Backpacker.com , the companion site to Backpacker magazine. Just add your own knife fix into all three of these, they tend to be squeamish about big blades.

Great. Thank you

No problem, I think the fellas you mentioned will have better suggestions than I do. I learned from the military, I go heavy.

Still very much appreciated

On another note: We have a Merrell outlet nearby with some killer deals on hiking boots. Anyone have any experience with merrell boots that can say something positive or negative about them?

All I know is how we do it. Just about every state has a state park site that lists trails, we use everytrail.com and trails.com quite a bit too. We pick a region we want to go to and start hitting google. Maps and trail info is usually available online. Call the park rangers. Gear lists are trip specific for thte most part coupled with a core group of gear items that go everywhere (including FA and survival/rescue). We hike or walk about five miles almost everyday to keep some trail legs. Let somebody know where, when and how long. We're big fans of trekking poles. Get out there a few times and you'll have your own method pretty quick.

Edit: I've got three pairs of Merrells with a bunch of miles on them. Big wide toe box and solid uppers with good vibram soles. At least, that's what they used to be.

I've owned several pair of Merrell hikers. The shoes are great, I have amphib type shoes for kayaking. I also have some high top boots from them, lots of miles and loads of life still in them. The boots are a little over stuffed on the ankle support for my liking, but they're excellent footwear.

When Merrill were made in Vietnam, they fit well and were comfortable, now they are made in China, not for my feet. I hike in Vasque... made by Redwing

When did they change? I've had my shoes since about '08, the last pair of boots I bought were in '06.

G&B,

L to R, Vasque MX2 (Italy), Merrell (China), Technica (Italy).

All three pairs have hundreds of miles on them. The Chinese made Merrells have held up exceptionally well for me.

If I had to pick one pair, it would be the Vasques. BUT, I heard they've moved to china as well.

Thanks for the comparison photo. The thought of a quality boot in the $90-110 dollar range is pretty appealing.

I'm not sure Murph... I had a pair of trails shoes I wore everywhere.. Got a new pair a year or so ago, and the didn't fit or feel the same. Made my feet hurt. I check and sure enough, China.

I walk in sketcher outdoor sport jukes now, extra wide for my duck feet.

I haven't had any issue with my Chinese merrill's construction, they just don't fit the same as the vietnam ones...
I actually like the shoe, they just make my feet hurt. Of course, I have had gout for 30 years

I hear awful stuff about gout, Moose suffers from that as well. I have flat feet, even had to have a waiver to enlist. My feet aren't too picky, I've beat the hell out of them and have only had athlete's foot once.
