Still very much appreciated

On another note: We have a Merrell outlet nearby with some killer deals on hiking boots. Anyone have any experience with merrell boots that can say something positive or negative about them?

I haven't done any real hiking with my pair, not with a heavy pack at least, but I have done a fair share of park trial walking and I love the Moab mid goretex pair I have had for a year now... they are still in great shape and I am very heavy. I usually destroy a pair of shoes in 6 months. I wear size 13 and have a wide foot, they fit very well for me.

Got to spend some time in the shop today, worked on a record 8 knives in one day. Hopefully some will actually leave the house!

Here's some straight-edged fun:

and the smallest carry-able kiradashi! ha! Good to get some things off the bench and make some room.

Didn't know Merrell moved to China. The pair on my feet right now were made in Vietnam and have Vibram soles, which are the Michelin tires of shoe soles.

My other pair of Merrells are zero drop Road Gloves running shoes, and they're made in China. They do have a wide toe bed.

I have a couple pair of Lowa (Germany) all leather boots that are durable as hell, but crazy heavy. I've been thinking about getting some mid hikers with more synthetics and less leather.

I don't have a pair of hiking boots from them, but I own two pairs of Red Wing work boots and they have been the best, toughest, most comfortable boots I've ever had.

Yeah, Dubz has some big paws. I had him send me measurements from knuckle to knuckle. I actually did make another one for a guy whose hands are at least as big though, if not bigger.

Once I finish up this chopper I'm working on for WW, I might need to get a 2x4 and see how well it performs before I send it out. Some day I hope to meet Dan in person. I owe him a few beers for the help he's given me. Real class act.

Nice, what steel are they?

Looking good, If you check out the performance take PICTURES :D

The small one is looking great too. I really enjoy watching the progress. And your doing a great job on it. Its awesome to see something i drew on paper coming to life. Thanks Crimson :)

3V :D Its going to be one tough cookie :)

I just made an interesting discovery. You can take one of these:

...and use it for a steel to touch up an edge.

It works.

Thats an awesome tip, thanks for sharing :) I will be trying it out. I always carry one of those strikers anyway!!

chop xmas trees at your peril kids!

Now us folk living in the city cant let a perfectly good tree get thrown in the trash. Thats at least an hour or 2 of knife using fun if you spread it out. I chopped all the branches off, bagged them for the trash and then cut the tree into 3 section and took them down to the basement for more playing with knives later.

But cleaning the sap off them sucks. Sticky stuff LOL.

I need to cut up our tree later today, too. (Well, I don't "need" to, I could just haul it to the curb, but like you said...) I figure if I save all the branches and break the trunk down into 3-4 pieces it will be good kindling for our firepit in a few weeks. I'm slowly running out of seasoned Bradford pear :(. That stuff burns clean and hot once it's aged a couple years...

My Browning Crowell/Barker is really the best tool I've got for the job, but I should probably use a Growl for at least part of it.

Not looking forward to the cleanup afterwards, though. I'm sure some of these guys have tips on that *hint hint* ;)

I'm not surprised, that makes perfect sense. Multi-purposing is kewl. Daizee and I were talking about stuff like that recently... there are some interesting ideas floating back and forth... I'll leave it at that ;)

I love the Browning Crowell/Barker competition knife!! I dont have one but my buddy does and its a great working knife. Comfortable handle.

I ended up cleaning the knives i used with rubbing alcohol. That worked excellently. Took the sap right off. But then i cleaned the rubbing alcohol off and oiled them up real good because i wasnt sure if alcohol might have a negative effect on the steel. But i doubt it since people use acetone to strip blades. Still better safe than sorry so i washed them after using the alcohol. then i oiled them real good. now they are back nice and shiny :)

The handle is a bit too blocky, but that's better than too scrawny. It would be easy to smooth out the corners a bit... but I haven't bothered so far.

Alcohol makes sense. It doesn't harm steel in any way I've ever noticed; in fact I use it to remove acetone residue after using the acetone to prep tangs and clean up epoxy mess, when gluing up handles.

The top choppers blade profile reminds me a lot of some old corn knives I've collected over the years. Very cool. Nice job crimson, what kinda handles are going on it?

Todd as of right now the handles are going to be Bocote on both. Its one of my favorite types of wood.

Y'all figured out the elusive 37th use of a Pop Tart, didn't you?
