This is the snark thread brother, i dont take offense to much of anything here :D

... Maybe your saying its a waste to match the quality of the reel to the quality of the rod?

Exactly, consider that a rod and a reel together define the experience. You don't get the real benefit of the money spent on either unless they are matched properly. Under a $100-150 for a rod and $100 or so for a reel it doesn't really matter that much. You can get quality components and good all 'round performance for those prices. I agree with Ulf, there are a lot of good reels on the market today. Once one decides to spend the extra dough on one or the other, though, there should be some thought about matching them up or it's a waste. Kind of like...it makes no sense to put a few thousand into spinners on the wheels of an old beater car. Some people will still do it and that's fine if they want to.

If you are going to use this set up for salt water fishing you should look into reels made for salt water fishing. Different components inside. -or- you can get a fresh water rig and commit yourself to being absolutely religious about cleaning it thoroughly after each salt water outing if you want it to last.

By all the replies to this, one might think this forum wasnt about fishing?? :p J/K

What reels do you guys like, and for what type of fishing?

My wife says I like big reels.

The reel I choose depends on what I'm after and what the wind is doing. I really prefer open face, but if it's too windy a spinning reel it is. The red Abu has gotten the most use in the surf. The green Shimano Curado for most lake, skinny water, other fishing. The big boy Daiwa for sharks and reds and whatever else the deep has to offer up.

edit: If this rain keeps up, I'll be able to use these boys in my back yard. I declare the drought in my neighborhood to be over!

James, another question. :o

Would it be cheating to carry my Swiss Army Knife just for the tools? I use the can opener or awl to strike firesteels, and I use the screw drivers a lot.

Yes and no... use your Becker to make sparks and open cans  (just be sane and careful, as always). Do not use your Becker to drive screws. :grumpy: That's what a SAK or multi-tool or screwdriver is for. It's amusing to me that you keep asking me about "rules"... relax youngblood, it's your knife and your challenge. Have fun and do whatever you think is right; I'm very confident that you'll figure it out. :)

... possibly different steels including 5160...

Why? Jiminy jumpin' jehosaphat on a pogo stick, going backwards from 52100 to 5160 is just plain stoooopid, for many reasons.

I have been known to wear socks with sandals in public when in the mood to embarrass my sisters and nieces.

I kinda do like sandals in summer. No socks, though... that kinda defeats the purpose of sweat evaporatagery and quick drainage when I wade/fall in the crick.

On the other hand, Crocs are just plain wrong on men...

Alright. Probably not gonna open any cans (SAK or otherwise), not sure about striking the steel with it since I'll be using it stock when I go camping, so I don't want to mess up the edge. When I get some coating off the spine I'll at least try it though.

Just making sure I know what you wanna see out of it. ;)

I have been trying to post for a while now... but quoting multiple messages is sending me to the end of the internet :(

Ulf Krogstad, The most i have ever spent on a reel was 50 or so honestly. But i started looking into good reels and found that shimano CI4, liked everything i seen about it... Called my father and found out he has 2 of the CI4s and favors them.... But its definitely pricey for me as well and thats why i was asking who had one for me HAHA :D

Im about to be moving and dont plan to drop that much right away for sure. In fact ill probably just use one of my father's reels for a while.... Im just getting the itch to get back into the water so im reading up :)

mbay1455, That makes sense to me bud, except this part "Some people will still do it and that's fine if they want to." No. Not really. Spinners are STOOPID :D

Yea growing up i always used the same 2 reels for EVERYTHING, and they were cheap wally world combo rod/reels at that... To make them last you HAVE to keep them clean.. Salt water can ruin damn near anything LOL

DunkEm, NICE photo brother!! I tried one of the open face or baitcaster reels once but really preferred the spinning reels.. I didnt give them much of a chance honestly though.

The idea behind scrapyard knives, IIRC, is they use the scrap steels from swamp rat, busse, and whatever they can get to try and keep the knives more cost efficient than the other 2 in the family.... I could be wrong though. But either way id NEVER pick 5160 over 52100 for any type of knife unless there was a price difference making it worth it to do so.

Yeah, I thought the same thing about crocs until I got a pair gifted to me. Since I really don't give a rats ass how people think I look, I tried them out. Very comfortable. I like mine, and I own several styles. Now some of the colors don't appeal to me, but I do like the shoes. Try a pair, and not the generic junk. You may be surprised.

Not me... sewer rat may taste like pumpkin pie, but I'll never know. Plus, it's just way too much fun to mock dudes wearing Crocs and watch them get all defensive about it :p

See, you already figured that out :D If I thought you were a dummy, I never would have offered this challenge.

Just wanna see you have good clean fun with a good knife, that's all :) I think I can speak for all us older dudes when I say, we like to encourage youngsters to learn and experience things for themselves.

But either way id NEVER pick 5160 over 52100 for any type of knife unless there was a price difference making it worth it to do so.

There isn't. 52100 is one of the least expensive cutlery steels available, and HT is not nearly as complicated as some people like to make it seem. The specs for "5160" have gotten so loose that my main steel guy won't even carry it... there's no telling what it really is from batch to batch. There is simply no sane reason to use "5160" for knives, unless you just wanna cobble together some stuff out of old leaf springs and hope/call it "5160" for some weird marketing angle. There are far too many other great options to even mess with that stuff... 10xx series, 52100, O1 or 1095CV all the way for carbon steel blades, baby!

Yeah if you can use your old mans Stradic thats awesome. I honestly would like to try one. I got one of my Penn Battles the 3000 off the bay for $40. If your looking for a GREAT reasonably cheap reel would try to pick one up. Doubt you"ll be sorry. But as you say if you got ones that are already doing it for ya that's more money being put towards more blades.:D Don't need an expensive set up to catch fish that's for sure. The reel my dad was using last weekend had me laughing cause I know he has a nice old school Abu baitcaster could have brought instead. It was one of those zebco HUGE push botton spincasters and we were tossing out crankbaits. He lost a couple in the beginning because the drag was complete garbage and was using 6lb mono. but after he changed the line to braided line it didn't matter that the drag was junk and was slaying them.:D doesn't take much just gotta know how to get em and make adjustments when necessary.

I like spinning reels. Baitcasting reels always seem to outsmart me. :o

Fishing math:

Bait casting reels + zzyzzogeton = big time, massive, completely untangle-able bird's nests.:D

The only way I can use a bait casting reel is to sit in a boat, drop the baited hook in the water and wait for a hungry fish to happen to swim by.

I have learned when it comes to fishing, I'm much better at the drinking part than the casting, reeling, or any other part.

I really like fishing. I like 'catching' even more but I don't seem to do as much of that.

A wise man once told me, "Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he'll drink and tell lies the rest of his life."

 :D

What reels do you guys like, and for what type of fishing?

I was in the same basic spot that you are in earlier this spring. All I had ever had was whatever looked good at wally world, and I wanted to try something a lot better. What I found is that Shimano seems to be the standard to which everything else is compared. I ended up with a 2500 Symetre and a 2500 Saros. I played with a Stradic CI4 and holy crap it was nice, but I didn't figure that putting a $200 reel on a $100 rod made a ton of sense for me. If I ever get to the point that I start to get really serious into fishing and start buying higher end rods from St Croix or G Loomis, you can bet there will be Stradics on them though!!

All this fishing talk is just fueling my urge HAHA.. its been about a year since i got a line wet at all. Will change SOON.

This is headed to me... Neat looking little thing, doubt its going to be very practical though.... Not like a new reel would be LMAO :D

I didnt buy this though... So there is that.

I at least wait an hr to see if there biting and then start hitting the booze. ah who am I kiddin an hour into fishing I'm already fall out the boat( or somehow fall in on land ) hammered.:D I can't count the times on my fangers how many times have ended up in the water intoxicated. These days I only bring so much alcohol with me. Somehow stops the accidents from occuring.:D

:D Speaking of fires steels, gonna check out Gander Mtn since I'll be in the big city ( :grumpy: ) so hopefully they'll have a firesteel with magnesium and a striker so I won't have to worry about striking with anything that's not on my firesteel.

Alrighty, I'll do just that. :)

Just got a haircut, feels nice for a change.

My uncle works for zebco, so I use a bunch if the stuff that he's given me, not sure which models though

I got to play with one at a knife store. It needs a quick-detach to loop it on the necklace. Pulling the necklace on and off to use it would be a pain.

While out on our errands my wife told me to grab this to read :D WP_002493.jpg Its pretty interesting so far
