Exactly, consider that a rod and a reel together define the experience. You don't get the real benefit of the money spent on either unless they are matched properly. Under a $100-150 for a rod and $100 or so for a reel it doesn't really matter that much. You can get quality components and good all 'round performance for those prices. I agree with Ulf, there are a lot of good reels on the market today. Once one decides to spend the extra dough on one or the other, though, there should be some thought about matching them up or it's a waste. Kind of like...it makes no sense to put a few thousand into spinners on the wheels of an old beater car. Some people will still do it and that's fine if they want to.
If you are going to use this set up for salt water fishing you should look into reels made for salt water fishing. Different components inside. -or- you can get a fresh water rig and commit yourself to being absolutely religious about cleaning it thoroughly after each salt water outing if you want it to last.
