Non smokers who carry lighters

Doc i have the exact same Austrian lighter got it on me right now didnt use it much seemed to run out of fluid way to quick . Then i read a thread on useing a ranger band on a zippo here and got a idea if you take a rubber band a small one and wrap it around the fill tube that slides out to fill the lighter it will seal it from evaporation. Use it all the time now and only have to fill it abought every two weeks .

Thanks for the info, LEGION 12. I haven't carried that lighter for years - still have it though.

Never smoked and always carry a lighter. Usually (especially if wearing jeans with that nifty little pocket) I carry a Zippo and a peanut lighter (flat-bottom) on my keychain. Always a Bic or three in any of my packs or bottle carrier as well (in addition to matches, firesteel, and fresnel lens).

Trying to find a way to minimize leakage from the zippo, especially since it's close to my body. I have to try a ranger band; the last thing I tried was parafilm and that wasn't so great.

Non-Smoker here - but I carry a lighter.

One of these:

A cheapie for sure, but it is O-ring sealed and seems to work well. I bought 5 of them to get the cheaper pricing and I have filled all of them with Zippo lighter fluid. I keep one in my pocket and have the rest lying around. Every now and then I'll test one that is lying around - after 4 months they still light fine, no sign of fuel evaporation. They are small enough to easily fit into a coin pocket on a pair of jeans. For camping I can keep on in my pocket and a couple in my pack - small, light & waterproof are pretty useful characteristics IMO. Despite being cheap rubbish they seem to work reliably - haven't had one let me down yet!

Geez, they don't seem like 'cheap rubbish' to me.

Hey rk,

The ranger band works pretty well. If I'm out and about in winter, I would also carry a small can of lighter fluid.

Thanks Doc  I'm going to have to give it a try and see what the mean time-to-refill comes out to be.

Stainless steel Peanut lighter from Country Comm
Its got a rubber gasket so that the lighter fluid wont evaporate.
Small, light and reliable. Carry it every day all day.

ex-smoker and i carry just a normal red bic.

its funny when people ask me why i have one, i ask em why they might carry a condom *(if its another guy)

Yep, non-smoker and carry a zippo everyday.

Have Bics all over the place, matchsafes, etc.

A good fire can cover a multitude of shelter sins.

IMO I don't understand how someone can get through a day without a knife, lighter and a flashlight.

Lighters are a great way to meet people, Gotta Light? has introduced me to many a good coworker or hook-up:D

so I carry a lighter for more of a social survival tool, even though I don't smoke cigarettes anymore.

Non-smoker. I always have a Zippo on me with a Z-Plus torch insert.

Pocket dump:

Zippo, dental floss, car keys with sealed vile which has jute inside and a small LED light, Leatherman Wave, Fisher Space pen, a few pesos, Emerson Super CQC-7B, a Blind Horse Knives fixed blade with Ferro rod in a JRE sheath (this one is a prototype of their Nov. special knife), and not pictured, my iPhone which I took the pic with.

Got a bic in both vehicles and in every bag and 4 in the house scattered. In the winter power outages or backups on the roads here can be frequent depending on the severity of the storm...better to be prepared.

Maybe not too you, but many people just consider the cheap metal they are made of and the 'made in China' aspect and consider them junk - reliable and functional aren't enough for a lot of people. Also when something doesn't cost much there are a lot of people that assume it must be crap (presumably they haven't spent any time using Opinel or Mora knives).

For me: I only need good steel in my knives and I don't really care if something is made in the USA or Japan or Taiwan or China - I only care if it is well made and will serve me well. I don't feel the need to drive a Porsche or BMW either, my last car was an older Toyota which was VERY reliable and got me around just fine.

Ex- cigarret smoker here, occasional pipe smoker (not weed) I always carry a lighter, too useful to not carry one. I prefer Bics, Bic knockoffs seem to suffer from less stable flames.

Years ago I carried Zippo, I got tired of having a constant red patch of skin on my leg.

Torch lighters are great, but more often than not I don't need a torch, not for things like frayed clothing, paracord, shoelace tips etc.

I don't smoke and I typically carry a Bic and a book of matches and a MFS on a lanyard to my Becker Necker and a matchcase in my book bag with strike anywhere matches...Four fire starters, just in case! ;)

Never smoke, but carry a zippo. Gets used more than I thought it would when I started carrying one. Lighting torches, people bumming lights and of course, just starting fires.

I usually carry the Silva (Brunton in u.s) Helios....
