Non-Tactical Looking Knife?

Hi,

I posted a question before re looking for a knife with about a 4" blade, thought about getting an endura among other choices.

However, I'm thinking filipino grip if I ever have to thrust cut and the endura doesn't really feel right for that- too thin for my hands.

Additionally, I live in Chicago, have read the laws back and forth, consulted with Bernard Levine and Michael Janich and have come to the conclusion that while I want to get a blade that's 3.5" or maybe even 4", it would be better to get a handle that comes in green or some other color besides tactical black. I love the griptilian handle, but have heard bad things about the axis lock in sd situations.

Could you recommend a knife that fits this criteria?

Again:

griptilian type handle or something that should feel comfortable with a filipino thrust grip.

non-black handle

non-tactical in appearance

fairly easy to open

preferably thumb stud

if liner lock, overbuilt/reinforced.

3.5 to 4 inches.

Thanks.

Spyderco Military or Para. Don't know alot about the grip you mentioned and the large Millie may be too big???
But they are/have:

Green, camo or orange handled with great locks.

Easy opening and grippy, even wet.

Doesnt look super "tactical" but can do alot of damage if called upon.

Oh crap, I forgot to mention: I don't like the spyderco handles. They're too thin and uncomfortable for my medium large hands/fingers, espec when doing a thrust cut with a filipino grip.

Also: SOG, anything with the word or appearance of "military", "paramilitary", tactical is out. I live in chicago, the politicians and bureaucrats here are scumbags and there is a high likelihood that they would use that kind of verbiage or appearance to hang you.

I don't know what a "filipino thrust grip" is, but in general here is a not too tactical looking really good quality one hand knife.
It should be quite excellent (I have other knives from the same brand).
But it's not cheap.

Assisted opening is another no-no. This is Chicago. In general, I don't like the looks of kershaws. Too modern/rocket ship.

I like the traditional look of a lum deja voo, but it's known as a tactical knife, so....

Kershaw Blur looks good and has good reviews. I don't have personal experience with it though.

To me the 740 is less a tactical knife and a lot more like a gentleman’s folder/utility knife.

Still if you think Spyderco knives are uncomfortable I would recommend finding a way to handle the Military in person. Everything about it screams comfort. And since you can still buy it with bright orange handles, that would be a good choice. IMO at least I cant see anyone sneaking up behind me with a bright orange knife.

Like mentioned above, you’ve got fairly narrow parameters and I’m having a hard time thinking of a knife that fits perfectly with everything.

What about the Chris Reeve Sebenza 21 with inlay.

Looks more like a gentleman's knife, but sturdy, quick etc.

Don't think you will have issues with the courts on this one.

Thanks, but did I mention that there's no way in hell I'd pay $400 for a knife?

I've handled the military. The knob on the end makes filipino grip uncomfortable, at least for me. Plus, like I said before, this is chicago, I don't want anything that says, military, tactical, etc.

Surely all of these knives made aren't just for mall ninjas, military types, folks outside of major population centers, etc?

To you the 740 is okay but to mercop on defensive folders, it's one of the best defensive folders and to nutnfancy, it has a crappy liner lock. two strikes, no thanks.

I'd prefer something in natural wood with a griptilian kind of shape. Safety orange is ugly as hell and I don't think I'd carry it for long.

My price is up to around $100 or so. Preferably clip rides low, so knife end is exposed, like the griptilian (makes it harder for some bureaucrat to argue that I'm concealing).

So you want something totally not threatening?

Check out the Manix 2 or the Tenacious. Both excellent knives with thicker handles.

I'm not sure what grip you're talking about, perhaps a link / pictures?

With your criteria you are going to be looking at either very expensive or very cheap with no pocket clip like the cheap Buck hunters.

No black knife etc, etc is going to cost you sense almost all are black these days.

I still think SOG or Chris Reeve would be the best 2 choices, but both are not cheap.

Now if you would go with black inlays then that will open things up a lot, I could point you to 10 great knives off the top of my head and they don't look tactical. ;)

It eather that or you will be carrying a butter knife, but then that's a fixed blade. LOL

How about a spoon?

Really though I wouldn't be too worried about the brand or color of the knife because you won't ever see a judge unless you break the law or Kill someone in self defense. It's not like they will be knocking down your door looking for your new knife. Look at it this way, a good lawyer can beat the knife thing if they have to, but dead is dead, end of story.

oh, that was a butterknife...nice.

I'll check out those two, thanks. I think the manix has two choils though? Wouldn't really be a good grip. Tenacious looks nice but I'm not sure the handle is shaped right for me. And it only comes in black.

A filipino grip is one that uses a tight grip with the middle, ring and pinky fingers. The thumb points toward the target which allows you to more easily hit your target when thrusting while absorbing the shock of hitting your target in the last three fingers.

An oval handle seems to fit nicely for me.

For the grip you like the CS Hatamoto would be perfect it's like it's made for it and the handles are big enough also.

You would have to hold one to be sure it fits you though, but I know it fits fine in that grip for me and I have pretty big hands.

Thanks, that clarifies things re almost all knives having black handles.

I would be interested in clipped knives with black inlay. Preferably medium large oval handle, 3.5 to 4 inch blade.

I am politically active here and oppose corrupt contractors who are tied to corrupt politicians and judges, so I need as lawyer proof a knife as possible.

Yes, that was a butter knife. ;)

Try an Paramilitary maybe? I can't seem to think of black as a bad idea, considering a lot of knives have black handles.

Perhaps a Sage II? I can't find a problem using that grip with any of my knives. Are you holding it further back? What is the index finger doing?
