Non-Tactical Looking Knife?

That's the correct grip, hardheart. Of course, the index finger sits on the handle and the thumb rests just above the spine of the blade....

Thanks, Dagon, but the "Gun Hammer" is a perfect example of the "tactical" problem. You are probably unfamiliar with our laws living in Belgium, but IL has what's called an intent based law. That not only means that you have to show intent to commit crime with a weapon, but that some asshole judge can say that you had bad intentions b/c the manufacturer or retailer of a product advertised the product for an ill-intentioned use. Words like "gun-hammer", "talon", "zero-tolerance", tactical etc. make the government's case easy.

Again, yes, like Pete says, most cops won't care, but if you get a politically motivated, corrupt politician and a politically motivated corrupt judge, and we have plenty around here, they can slap a possession of dangerous weapon charge on you and make it stick based on the advertising of the product. Plus, Chicago is the capitol of anti-second amendment politicians in the U.S., so "gun hammer" is definitely a stupid name for an otherwise fine pocketknife.

That's what federal court is for and all the way to the Supreme court if needed. If they violate your 2nd Amendment rights, it's unconstitutional. As long as you go strictly by what the law says on the books they can't by law convict you, if they do it will get overturned in Federal court. And when you win you will have one heck of a lawsuit.

It doesn't matter what it says on the knife blade as long as it meets Chicago's blade length laws. Any Good lawyer would take that case in a heartbeat.

"Worker" was the best name Spyderco ever gave a knife. Wouldn't it be great if they released some nice Sport Utility knives with names like Camper, Utility, Scout, Whittler, etc.?

Anyone thinking what I'm thinking? Spyderco Whittler? :D

I understand wanting to avoid something with a name like "Flesh Ripper 5000", or "Gut-Zipper", Just get something common, and that meets Chicago's laws. If there is an intent clause, you will have to deal with that if your blade is over the limit, and you do end up using it against a person. Arguing you didn't have intent and the bad guy is in the hospital and your knife is in evidence is going to happen no matter what the name of your knife is. If you use a knife on someone you will probably be wanting a good attorney regardless. Find a store buy a knife useful for your edc needs with a sturdy lock and a short blade, carry and use it and stop worrying about the what ifs.
Look into legal less-lethal options-taser, kimber pepper blaster, OC spray. They will allow you to keep distance between yourself and an attacker, always a good idea.

Also if you are worried about intent..as soon as your over jealous/corrupt DA learns of your useage of terms like Filipino grip, and "thumb toward target" I would think your worries of the name of the knife would be moot.

Good luck

Andy

Thanks, I'll check that out with my lawyer friends. However, what are the legal fees? Is the lawyer going to take on contingency? Will knifemakers donate to my case? I'm still paying off debts from when I was doing good works and got cheated out of unemployment on layoff....

yeah, I hear you guys. The knife would be the very last option, in a disparity of force/imminent fear of grievous bodily harm or death situation. I have pepper spray (picked up at local cop supply store) and will probably pick up a fenix edc light also for less lethal.

If I was in the legal situation you outline below, it would be after a worst case scenario and I would be arguing self defense. I know that there is an affirmative defense for even illegally carrying a firearm in IL and case law has established a strong castle doctrine, iirc, so the chances are in criminal court at least, assuming I acted properly, I would be alright in the medium term. It would be an ordeal, but...

I'll probably go with the 3.5" wood handled blade, maybe I'll go with the lone wolf longhorn after all....in public gatherings, I would have a blade less than 3 inches.

Point taken about the possible Gunhammer name problem.
Well then, here was the other Fox I recommended: the Pro Hunter. Sounds wilderness, not tactical. It seems to fit your requirements:

Here is also a short video of it.
