Northwoods Michigan Jack

Looking forward to this one.
I was very impressed with the Madison two-blade Barlow I picked up, but was a bit overwhelmed by the size, having been away from traditionals, save for SAKs, since I was about 10. Having picked up a 77 Barlow recently, I've found the sweet spot, size-wize (though I think a 47 is in my future.)
What I've also noticed is that about 90% of what I need a knife for on a daily basis (light food prep, opening mail/packages, trimming the loose thread here & there) can be done with a sheepsfoot or Wharncliffe blade. My go-to knife around the house is now the little GEC #15 Boys knife with a sheepsfoot blade, while my Enzo Birk stays in my pocket and the big ol' Al Mar Eagle is just resting comfortably in the chest. So the Wharncliffe on the #77 frame should work well for my needs, I think. And should be a bit more comfortable in size and more aesthetically appealing than the little #15.
And it looks from the pics off the GEC site that there will be quite a few nice covers to choose from.

Looking at the GEC pictures of the Michigan in production i cannot see any mammoth handles. Am i missing them ?
There are some very white handles, i presume bone ? but it could be an acrylic ?

Where can I see these WIP pictures?! I have looked on the site and cannot locate them. Please help.

Go to greateasterncutlery.net and look under the "What's in Production" heading on the right side. Click the link for the Michigan Jacks and you'll see the pictures posted.

You can also see WIP pics of knives by clicking on the "What's Happening" link

Disappointed it's got the "NoRTHwoodS" script across the top of the blade.

Just my personal preference... I'm not a fan of the font.

Was hoping the blade would be stamped at the base.

More great news for me but bad news for my bank account... I agree that we are living at a great time to be a fan of traditional knives, I hope Derrick keeps coming up with more winners:)

Man, that's my favorite part! I love the Rustic series with the stamp and heat treatment left on the blade. It just looks great.

What will make the Michigan Jack different from all the other knives using the 77 frame ? I think the answer is an easy open notch and Derricks stout Warncliffe-ish blade. This is a unique blade but not as all round useful as a Clip or Spearpoint. I would like to see the Northwoods brand define itself by unique patterns rather than just a unique blade profile, more along the line of the Case/Bose collabs. whose patterns are not in the regular Case offerings. There are many Traditional patterns from 100 years ago that are no longer in production that could be brought back as a Northwoods. This would increase price but be a dramatic 'move' that would truly set the Northwoods line apart from the regular GEC production knives.
Waynorths Washington Jack is an example of an old pattern being brought back and it is a superb addition to the world of Traditional knives. Northwoods could mine the great old patterns and become a truly special line of top end knives.

That's really what GEC has been doing since the start. That's what makes them a fun company for us knife knuts.

I figured there's probably a lot of people that like it. Just not my thing... same reason I don't have a Beer Scout Knife lol. I figured there was roughly a 50/50 chance the Northwoods logo would be stamped on the blade. I'm basing my opinion on pictures, I've never seen the blade stamp in person. I really like the 77 frame, EO, blade shape, cover choices... I might end up getting one anyway. I'm very curious how the red saw cut and mammoth are going to turn out. I was also curious about the oiled camel bone, but see GEC posted pictures today and it's surprisingly bright white. I thought oiled camel had a touch of tan.

Anybody know when these will be available? I just discovered the northwoods brand and absolutely love it, I really would like one of these Michigan jacks

Great! Thank you for the info Derrick. I think it's awesome that you take the time to interact with us here on the forum. Thank you for that.

As do I.

This isn't necessarily the right place to post this, but I just want to affirm that the whole KSF crew is great. I bought my Broadway Jack (I guess I oughta call it a mini-Michigan Jack to stay on topic...) in person at their shop in OR before the move and had a fantastic customer service experience. Looking forward to supporting them in the future.

As an employee here at KSF, I go in back around lunch every day to ask receiving if the Michigan Jack is here yet. Just sayin... I love the Northwoods rustic series. I can't wait!

I hope the KSF crew don't get swelled heads from all the praise we give them. Keep up the good work please !
