Not a One knife thread…but something like that

Great question...
The one I'd have to replace if it disappeared would be my Swiss Army Passenger. It was a birthday present for my 7th birthday.

Easily, for me, this would be the ESEE Izula, and this is the reason that I have 5 of them. This is not my favorite knife. This not my best knife. This knife holds no sentimental value, while many others do. I don’t think this is the best knife I own. It’s not really great at anything. But, it’s a fixed blade with no moving parts to break (my preference), easily accessible for purchase in case a replacement is needed, not expensive (maybe more expensive than it should be though), easily maintained, plenty durable, easily sharpened without any special equipment, small enough to carry unnoticed in the pocket yet big enough to do serious work, cuts way above its size, fits my hand perfectly, and it’s more a Jack of all trades kind of knife. I have nicer, I have more expensive, I have more sentimental, but if I can only have one to carry on a daily basis this would be it.

Absolutely agree with your sentiment and reasoning JWright214 JWright214 . I am in a similar situation. This is the knife that I use probably the most around home and the farm and the one that I replace the most. I take the tone of the 'knife display's' to a new (lower) level and give you the "Bacho"

It is just a Mora Companion made under licence and retails here in New Zealand for around $9 at any Farm Supply warehouse - that's USD $5.70 at today's rates. It is not my EDC as such but I keep one in my pack, my vehicles and in the house and workshop. When out on the farm or in the forest I usually have one on my belt or down a boot. It is the knife that I have used for all tasks around the farm, for dressing out countless pigs, sheep and deer and anything else that I have wanted done but not wanted to risk a better quality blade on. They are robust and easy to keep sharp. In fact they are one of the few knives that I have found that you can pick up off the store counter and shave the hair off your arm.....they come that sharp from the factory and sell in display boxes of 20 on the counters in stores. Farmers often buy them box at a time. It is the one knife that I always have a supply of. Interestingly, it is my wife's, (Sharon) most favoured knife for dressing out pigs in the field. She finds that it just fits her hand well and is the right size and shape for her tastes.

I like the look and spec's of your ESEE Izula, but still a bit expensive here.....approximately 14 times the price of the Bacho....:(

Cheers

If it’s not broken don’t try to fix it. I say stick to what works. The more I buy knives, the more I find that the basic, simple, quality, no frills, knives are my favorite.

Six years ago, it would have been my Griptilian. Not “would have been”. “Was”. I lost it and ordered a replacement that night. At the time, it was the most expensive knife I owned, and my daily carry.
The new knife came in a couple of days. By that time I had already found the original, lying in the snow next to where I had parked my bus.
In recent years, the game has changed. A couple of months ago I lost my daily carry Alox Electrician. After it didn’t turn up for a week, I tried a Swiss Army Seven as a substitute, but didn’t like the bulk of the three-layer knife in my pocket, so I got another Electrician. Only then, and inevitably, the lost knife turned up, in the toe of a shoe, so now I have two.
If I had to pick one in a vacuum, it would probably be my BK14, or CPK DEK1, or BK16, or very likely the Jääkkäripuukko.
As it happened, today, I had to cut some small brush out in the yard. I could not put my hand on my Tramontina 14” bolo, and had not seen it since fall. I used my other 14” bolo, a Marbles, which worked just fine, but did not cure the nagging unease I felt. As soon as I was done outside, I sat down and ordered another Tramontina.
I guess the short answer to Gary’s question is: It depends on what day you ask me.

Well, since my grandson gave me this one for Christmas, I have to say it's this one hands down. It will cut a steak or a sandwich or cord or open up a trout or whatever needs cutting and will look good doing it.

Carried every day......Bantang BT4 in 3V with sharpened top swedge.

!! I have taken a photo from that exact same place!! Sorry, got all excited. It’s very rare for me to recognize where a photo was taken, especially that far of a distance from Canada. 😁

This has happened to me just last week. I have had three carbon Mora Robust Pros now. The first I gave to my nephew who needed a good working knife and he did not know where to start. I replaced it not long after. Then the newest greyhound chewed the pommel off it so I sawed the grip off completely to prepare for a wood grip replacement project, leaving me without the knife a while. The replacement showed up in 48 hours thanks to Amazon Prime shipping.

Here it is with its new yoghurt patina alongside its dismounted predecessor. Not a great pic, and as cleaning and stropping wears away the patina after a while, maybe I'll update the image at some point.

A great knife at a great price! Truly indestructible in even abusive circumstances -- unless you let the hounds get at them.

I'll fully admit that I tend to suffer from recency bias, but at this moment the one knife I'd definitely try to replace would be my Brian Brown Yeager-M. It just checks so many boxes for me. Super deep, hollow ground, Wharncliffe blade. Solid feel in hand. Clean lines. And the action is sooo smooth and satisfying. Acoustics ... phenomenal. Just wish the pocket clip was a hair less tight.

I have developed deep feeling for a lot of them, so it would be hard to choose just one. The ones I'd feel the biggest need to replace quickest would be the Benchmade Crooked River, Benchmade Bugout, Benchmade Griptilian, Zero Tolerance Emerson, Spyderco Police 4, Cold Steel AD10, GiantMouse ACE Biblio, Barkriver Bravo 1, Lion Steel M5, MKM Maniago Mikro 1, Kizer Mini Sheepdog, and Morakniv Kansbol.

I actually have thought about this same question. My answer is the plain bog standard 940. It is the closest to "My EDC Knife" as I have and is starting to look it. So if I lost my knife collection and the insurance company gave me the money to replace them, the 940 would be at the top of the list and maybe one of only a few.

an old picture, it looks a little more worn now:

Thanks for sharing guys, and I certainly found myself in that 'lost it, found it' category too often ;) I had a very old Rigid folder that was in a vest pocket of my coveralls and I remember leaping in the air, as much as gravity allowed me to ;), to try and chop off an offending limb of a tree that was bugging me. As I did so, the knife leaped from my pocket and fell into the grass, only to be found the following spring when my wife ran over it with the lawnmower. It spent the winter in the snow and showed no visible signs of damage from rust, she noticed the metal shining after she ran the lawnmower over that area, go figure! A short time afterward the wood scales did come free, they were just glued on and now, I know not where that knife is, long since gone.

But back to my choice, The Giantmouse Ace Farley, as some of you had done, I recently picked up a second one, a backup if you will. So I will not be without in the event the couch eats it, or the seat belt gobbles it up, my leaping days are behind me so that isn't a concern now ;) Here is the knife next to a Kizer Gemini with black micarta scales, also quite a nice knife but it would still be the Farley that gets my vote. Around that pair, above and to the left is my fixed blade Bradford knives sheepsfoot in CPM3v that would be my Fixed blade one to replace if it ever was lost. To the right of the folders are two magnifiers that I made, using lenses from industrial camera lenses that my old company threw out, I tore down the lens to repurpose the inner lens for such duty. The closest one has a walnut front with an oak blended tail and using three bamboo pins just for decorative but also strength and the far right is all walnut.

940 is a truly great design. Carries small and light, especially for what it gives in cutting ability. I really like mine too. Obviously. Gives up very little in blade length to a large Inkosi. But much lighter. Glad to have both.

So, we’ve had many threads over the years that said
“You can only have One knife, what is it?”

This thread asks

“Of all your knives, which one would you keep forever and if you lost it, you would try and replace it right away “

So not a one and only question but a Which is your favorite to date

For me, not including my SAK’s as I consider them more tools than knife, would be my Giantmouse Ace Farley, just a very comfortable size knife

The micarta is soft to the touch

I was not aware of this brand and just checkd out their website. Thank you for bringing it to my attention, I am thinking of ordering one of Sonoma V2's in canvas, they look like a great company.
