Just mailed a package via Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation The contents were wrapped and taped and the outside of the box was wrapped in two layers of priority mail tape. Buyer says that when box arrived had brown tape on the end of the box and only 1 of 3 knives was still in the box. Seller chose not to purchase insurance, so what would you do?

tough call.

do you believe the buyer?

on one hand, he chose not to purchase insurance, and gave up any protections provided, including reimbursement for lost and/or damaged contents.

on the other, most here will conclude that the deal is not complete until both parties are satisfied.

i always purchase insurance, regardless of what a buyer or seller wants. when selling, i offer no alternative, and when buying make the request.

more details may be needed until we can make a fair assessment.

I always put insurance on all my deals just incase .... I have never had a problem here on the forums with the post office but things like this happen ..... I would say its up to the seller to make sure it gets there with no problems .....

Not sure what other details will help but the dc# number shows as of this post that it has not been delivered. He said he picks up his mail at a mail box store and spoke with the workers and they said I would have to start a claim.

How can I start a claim when no insurance was purchased?

I don't care what the buyer wants, when I ship I insure, that is protection for ME not them.

I suppose if you have it in writing somewhere where they said they did not want you to provide insurance you are on solid ground. In that case they are out of luck.

A package typically has a default value of insurance (depends on the carrier) in this case with the package delivered you are going to have a very hard time collecting. If it was shipped from one of those mailbox stores to one of those mailbox store, they also typically carry some minimal insurance amount. I doubt you will ever collect any.

If you click on the link in the first post I said insurance was an extra 2.50,when I received payment no extra was included.

It was shipped at a post office not by fedex or ups witch have built in insurance.

did he state he did not want insurance, or is this implied by the payment sent?

is it possible the buyer did this unintentionally (not purchase the ins)?

dc may be a couple days behind, so that doesn't really indicate anything.

I just hope you don't get screwed over. Just make sure to always insure. I insured a package last week for $600.00 and it only cost $7.00 and change for the insurance.

Do the delivery confirmation as well.

implied buy the amount of the payment

Since you offered insurance and the buyer did not opt for it, I'd say that puts the risk on them. That would make it a "no returns/refunds" purchase to me personally.

If you had not offered insurance at all, I would be singing a different tune.

did you advise the buyer that by not purchasing the ins that he accepts responsibility once the package leaves your hands?

in general, the deal is not complete until both parties are satisified, but this rule is not absolute, as there may be additional conditions specific to the transaction.

i dont know about a claim filing w/o ins, but it is certainly worth investigating.

I did not advise the buyer about the insurance.Come to think of it he may not have read the thread fully because he sent the wrong kind of money order. Not a big deal but an inconvenience to me having to go to the bank twice instead of just cashing it when I went to the PO to mail the knives.

I tend to agree with that.

But I also think that when you said "The contents were wrapped and taped and the outside of the box was wrapped in two layers of priority mail tape." that kind of screams open me and take a look. I buy insurance, but also try to package things as inconspicuously as possible.

The outside edges were wraped with priority tape not the entire box.

ive learned it is never safe to assume anyone has read a post in its entirety, in any of the forums, or if read, actually understood everything.

the buyer is relatively new, and probably didn't see the post with the insurance clause since it wasn't part of actual for sale sections.

he probably just saw the pictures, and scrolled down to make his post.
