Nutnfancy is Talking to Us.

That's not what he's doing and that's not who he's talking to. He's addressing people who have strong opinions on subjects but don't have the actual experience to base them on.

High carbon knives rust (when wet), unless well taken care of, and that often gets neglected under strenuous conditions. That's the kind of point he makes.
Short knives don't baton well. Another point. I personally find that hard to disagree with.

++1^ I guess I dont really understand the gripe here, people that dont know what they are talking about sometimes talk smack on forums, thats what he is getting at. He aint talkin to me with that statement, mabe you, not me

I don't really watch any of Nutnfancy's videos anymore since he's gotten so LONG winded but he generally makes some good points. Sometimes he's off base though, as are we all.

My thoughts of watching his stuff, particularly some of his outdoor posts. I just get the impression he tries too hard to demonstrate the skills he doesn't really have and exaggerate his experiences.

I keep remembering that snow trip of his which looks all good on the surface in terms of how it is shot and stuff, but when you pay attention to him you can see his poor choices and the fact that he is inefficient and unfamiliar with his surroundings, all the while trying to bluff his way through it. Just watch his balance on anything and you will see what I mean. He whines a lot about how much work everything he doesn't like (or isn't good at) is, but most of the times it because he's just so damn inefficient with the tool he's using.

So when he makes statements about other things, like the so called problem with rust, then I just figure its about as useful as his demonstrations. The guy is borderline obsessive compulsive about WD40'ing his tools to the point of stupidity. How the hell can I respect somebody like that talking about rust? Wipe it on the jeans and two weeks later scotch brite the fuzz off...Jeez, Louise!

In the past in his videos he has talked bad about the forums and I believe he is hinting at that point again.
No he didn't, he was quite accurate. There is an awful lot of turf wars going on here, people being attached to a brand or a type or whatever, and 'defending' it (as if it needs defending) to the exclusion of all others. I happen to agree with that assessment. Too many people deliberately maintain tunnel vision. For them, the answer to every question is "<Insert brand/model here>." And there's no debating people like that because it's never about the pro's and cons.

There's only one possible outcome. And that is not conducive to a frank and open discussion.

Exactly, if you feel it doesn't apply to you then you won't feel offended. I'm not the world's greatest outdoorsman either, but I can hold my own. I know what works for me based on my own experience.
And I never take an axe either! :D

If someone watched me with a camera, I'm sure someone would find a flaw in what I do. I do the best I can the best I know how. Asking for textbook demonstration of everything seems unrealistic. He reviewed a Fiskars axe once and I remember thinking his chopping looked clumsy. This isn't to say I'm a pro, but it really is easier to judge than to do. I know for a fact that if someone followed me around for a while with a camera people would line up to show me how much better they could preform the tasks than me. All factors considered, he does a pretty good job. Until each of us takes the time to really put out some videos of the same nature, we should probably consider the difficulty and time that goes into it. We're all flawed in numerous ways, and it's easier to critique than not sometimes. Some of his reviews have been helpful to me and I appreciate the fact that he took the time to do them. Some have not helped me but perhaps someone else. Kind of a cool thing for him to do. I'm sure he benefits in some way, but who's to say he shouldn't? I like getting paid for working, I expect everyone else does too.

Well, there are a few posters on youtube who get caught up in their own alter ego and I think nuntanfancy is one of them. I tend to prefer the guys who post videos on youtube as a venue to discuss skills in the forums and to use their video as a forum to debate about rather than as a showcase or private tv-show. I distrust the motivations of the other type.

I think the important thing to note about nutn is that he is not a GOD. Who cares what he thinks the best kind of knife is. I watch his videos but I take everything he says with a grain of salt. As he says "your mileage may vary." This a true statement because the more you get out and try things the more you decide if you agree with his methods or don't. I think people get way to wrapped up in what his opinions are. Then you get people saying that his opinion is the way it should be done and sticking up for everything he says as if he is a freakin' deity.

My solution for a big lightweight blade for wood processing is a machete. Weighs less than a lot of the thick-bladed 6-10" woods blades out there and hits harder--it's almost always MUCH cheaper, too! :D

But we all have our preferences, and we use what we like. :)

I can't watch Nutnfancy's videos anymore. It's possible to be concise and articulate in a video. Why say in 10mins what you can say in 1?
Maybe I'm being nasty.

Dead on Bro!

Plus...knives are tools, plain and simple in my mind. To much mumbo jumbo and "what if BS" in most reviews. Knives cut s#%t plain and simple! Boil it down to this...can my blade cut what is put in front of me? If not get a damn hatchet! Cave men made it with bone & stone blades for goodness sakes!!!!!!!

I don't give a crap about this stuff, makes you wonder if companies are offering under-the-table advertising money. He can blab all he wants, I know what I like and how well it works. Noone can convince me the RC5 isn't a knife I can't trust my life to.

So whats the problem with that?

BUT ANYWAY, until N'Fancy starts posting here...I say we quit posting about him or his videos.

He has an account here but doesn't bother posting. As to the rest. We all have our own preferences :D

OK I'm exactly that should speak up on this but you guys see and have a point. It comes down to what you feel comfortable with. In an emergency even a butter knife would be good and you'd find some use for it. Actually how to use it.
Personally I really don't know survival knives, if I should call them that. That's why I'm here, that's why there's a thread where a surprising (at least to me) number of you put down your opinions and experiences. And that wasn't to "survive anything", it was to prevent me getting into a situation like that. This is a big difference between you guys here and him. The way you act is to explain that you're not know it all experts but you can give some advice that might (and in my case is) helpful.
Now for some of Nutn's vids - there's some bull to them. But what is worse than that is that he takes his experiences into account and with them tries to disproof everyone else. And based on that he gives a review and his opinion. Only he knows how busy he really is, but he should try to take time and talk with other ppl. Might give him some new insight to maybe something that he missed, and that might case him to stop over hyping things.
This is just my 2 cents

Welcome to Bladeforums Styx!

You're right about a few things! Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one. The thing about stating an opinion (like our subject Nutnfancy here) is that it leaves little room for argument. You will find some of the same here. Some of it is very productive conversation that is dynamic and beneficial. You can learn much here. It is important to be critical of what you read (or watch), no matter where you are.

Not speaking to Styx directly, but in general, I think that Nutnfancy may like to hear himself speak, he may derive some benefit from his reviews other than what we see, however, he's really just stating his own opinion. Take it with a grain of salt. Either you agree or you don't. He's not laying down law for anyone. He's just using his experience to judge the knives he uses, owns, handles (or in some cases just looks at I guess).

If you don't like his video's don't watch them. I have left off of watching them now that he's gotten a larger following. I haven't the time for his new 40 minute videos. The old school 10 min videos he used to do were helpful to me at one point. We all grow and evolve. As of now, I think I've surpassed his knowledge of steel and it's uses and limitations. However, he has had the opportunity to handle many more knives than I have, and when seeking an opinion, I can listen to his or any other youtube reviewer and evaluate the information via my own personal filter.

I cant stand listening to that guy blather on. I couldn't care less what he likes.

Yeah, well you're a HOG. A different class unto itself. You throw knives, some of which cost more than some peoples cars. Nutnfacny would be worried about scratching his CS San Mai Tralmaster (I think he mentioned one of his safe queens is a CS San Mai Trail Master way back when I watched his videos). His reviews are meant for people who aren't knife nuts, the average Joe's who work hard to buy one, maybe two knives and stop there.

P.S. That avatar, is still freaking me out :D
