Nutnfancy is Talking to Us.

Yeah, well you're a HOG. A different class unto itself. You throw knives, some of which cost more than some peoples cars. Nutnfacny would be worried about scratching his CS San Mai Tralmaster (I think he mentioned one of his safe queens is a CS San Mai Trail Master way back when I watched his videos). His reviews are meant for people who aren't knife nuts, the average Joe's who work hard to buy one, maybe two knives and stop there.

P.S. That avatar, is still freaking me out :D

You have no right to talk about avatars that freak people out ;)

Nutnfancy is right about one thing...

I connect with by gear emotionally.

There I said it.

He only had the rat3 to show that he'd prefer to use a larger knife for woodworking. Relax.

I stopped the video at 10ish minutes though. Spent more time talking about the other 50 knives on his table. I wanted an a1 review, oh well.

High carbon knives rust (when wet), unless well taken care of, and that often gets neglected under strenuous conditions. That's the kind of point he makes.
Short knives don't baton well. Another point. I personally find that hard to disagree with.

A fast wipe with a rag isnt too hard. And a short knife can baton small rounds fine.

If fancynuts was so concerned about processing large volumes of wood, he'd learn to use an Axe properly.

My thoughts of watching his stuff, particularly some of his outdoor posts. I just get the impression he tries too hard to demonstrate the skills he doesn't really have and exaggerate his experiences.

Watch his axe video. Watch it and tell me he isn't an idiot who is making videos about stuff he knows nothing about.

He does everything wrong that he could, and then claims axes are useless, and that they take too much training and effort to use. It's pretty easy.

I learned more watching Ray Mears video than I did splitting wood for the winter fire all those years of my childhood.

You mean the one where he uses a splitting axe to chop through the tree against the grain? :p

On a slope without clearing an area, and way more effort than needed? Yea that one. Pretty sure he smashed it into rocks and complained about edge chipping too. I know he said it was to show why he personally didn't like axes, but if he'd bother to learn how to properly use them, I'm willing to bet he'd like them. As far as being too heavy to pack, I have trouble understanding that from a guy who will hike in 15 choppers at a time

I find all his video's to long and I have yet to watch one to the end... I prefer simple ,informative vids that are short & sweet...
tone of his voice and his ego make me tone out LOL
if his name is in it I no longer click it ....

TTD is right, his vids are way too long. Some of his opinions are out there, but they are opinions.

I just watched the full 37 minutes of "Lessons of my Father: Depussification". It was a really good video. He grew up with a hardcore outdoorsman as a father and he died in a plane crash in the 1980s. Fancynuts is passing that on to his own children.

I have a new respect for the guy. When you get away from the "check this out dudes" videos, he seems like a down to earth guy.

eh. A knife is a knife. In a real survival situation, ie, when you're lost/traped in by a storm, You really don't sit around thinking "crap, I wish I had X, or a longer Y" You just take stock of what you have, and what you need to get done.

I dunno...I wish I had a longer Y on a pretty routine basis...

Oh you were talking about knives...silly me... :o:foot:

:D

Maybe that's what we all should do - just try to view his vids in a different perspective and ignore the sometimes maniac arrogance that is displayed. And I should know, I tend to get arrogant as hell at times.

Well one thing should be given to him - he is trying to help the average Joe. In a way. And trough the progress of his vids (I have way to much spare time now so I watched a lot of his old videos that involve bushcraft in the past few days) he does bring some positive aspects. And quite a few negative, although I doubt it's on purpose.
And sometimes those vids help. But one thing that I'm quite sure bugs most ppl is his making fun of others because they are doing sth wrong by his opinion. It can be the mentioned ax thing, the firearm carry (ok honestly what idiot would strap his gun to his chest in an open conflict if that's the biggest target on your body?!), the big/small survival knife... Actually in one of his adventure (if they can be called that) vids he comments on how his friend is poorly prepared. And yet maybe 10 mins earlier it was said that Nutn made a mistake there because he didn't tell him that they are going on that hiking trip, but instead a late breakfast. And as pointed out - who needs 15 knives on a day trip?
What I wanted to say, while he has good and bad things about him there are some logic failures and contradictions in his words.

And as pointed out - who needs 15 knives on a day trip?

while i can't stand his videos (or noz's) for that matter, Taking 15 - 50 blades into the woods on a day trip is just plain fun, esp if the group your with brings a bunch too. everyone gets to play with knives in the woods, after all, thats why we go into the woods, to play with knives!

I just don't like the attitude that if you disagree with someone you must not have any experience with something.

Sometimes "experts" like being experts and feel the way to stay the "expert" is to make sure they're the only one. Or at least viewed as the only one.

Go outside, have fun, and don't sweat personal preference.

Yea. I don't think he's a bad guy, or doing a bad thing with his videos. His editing has slipped a little, making vids too long.. Were all going to be a bit arrogent.

It's his inabilty to consider other ideas that bothers me. I initally thought anyone using a machete in the north was an idiot. But, I gave it an honest chance, and felt silly when I saw how good it was. And my 15 knife comment was solely related to his opinion axes are too heavy. I get that he takes all those knives out to compare them.

May I just say that this video was WICKED!

EDIT

Anything with a blood groove is not a "survival knife." It's a fighter that you may be able to use for batoning.

Here he goes again, this time more indirectly calling us out(i.e. survival circles/groups referring to forums). Well he doesn't like short blades, maybe he should try the Junglas. Also I don't know why he likes a stainless steel survival knife so much. Well, does anyone else disagree?

This starts at 3:00.

This has probably been covered before but NutnFancy has some pretty strong opinions based on his own experience in the woods, for decades. He knows what works for him. And that's it. I have seen almost all of his videos and a common thread you will hear/see is his railing against Armchair survivalists/bushcrafters/commandos/experts. He stresses that it's great that you have an opinion, but if you don't base that opinion on actual experience and first hand knowledge, your opinion is worthless. Period. I hate Stainless Steel by the way and carry multiple tools in the field to include axes, choppers, bushcraft knives with scandi and convex edges. Current favorites are a BRKT Bravo-1, Valiant Survival Golok, Fiskars Chopping axe and a Folding saw. These items ALWAYS come with me and I have no problem carrying them. If I had to take one, it would be an 8" Leuku. So, am I wrong because of my choices? Is my opinion valid or not because it might be different than anyone else? Am I even allowed to have an opinion any more if it upsets someone with a thin skin? I hope so. why are you watching him if you are so upset with what he says? Or are you the type of person he is referring to? Think about it.
