NW Lincoln Jack Picture Thread

A month!? Where are you headed?
Lol! Yeah, I got laid off, so I’m now in Australia for the time being, long story... Probably not the smartest purchase for the jobless, but c’mon, a Mammoth Northwoods/GEC 15? Just look at how awesome those turned out!

Oh I don't think it's a silly purchase. You can just about always move a Northwoods knife for what you have into it if you have to. So no biggy there. You'll be happy once you get your hands on it. Safe journeys to you in the meantime!

I thought some folks might be wondering so here's a comparison of the standard 15 clip blade to the new LJ clip. More belly on the standard clip. Actually belly isn't the correct term as they both have roughly the same belly. It's more of the angle of the two that's different.

very nice, i suddenly reconsidered but itll be difficult im sure to find them fairly. does it remind you of the clip blade from the modified one arm razor with a little more belly?

they did something to the lines of the clip, thats what changed my mind

Jack, think of the comparison of the two much like the two different clip blades on the 77 Medium Barlows. The LJ compares to the older 77 clip like what we saw on the 77 Stag Jack. It sits down in the blade well more than the standard 15 clip.

I personally like the clip profile on the TC's better. The cutting edge seems to be about the same on both but I like that the TC has a broader blade.
(sorry for the crappy indoor pic)

Wanted to add a photo that ties in with some of the recent discussion regarding the LJ blade shape and a few of the various clips produced in the past. I really like everything about the Lincoln Jack so far. Don't have enough time in the pocket or in-use with it to really give it a full review but I would absolutely but it again!

Great job Northwoods, GEC and @okbohn!!!

Very nice Jake. My slight negative on this knife (and this is strictly personal), is the Saber grind blade. I'm generally not a huge fan. But then again, the blade is the distinguishing feature of the Northwoods. I usually prefer a full flat grind. I was able to overcome that because it is a single clip blade from a maker that knows how to do it right. The only other slight negative (again personal), would be the heat treat scale left on the blade. It seems to be a bit heavier than other Northwoods knives and I believe that is why many folks are experiencing sluggish walk and talk. I removed some of it from my knife mainly because I found it to be too excessive from an aesthetics viewpoint. The walk and talk on mine was fine to begin with, but it improved after I polished off some of the scaling and hit it with oil afterwards.
There are a couple other things I would change if consulted, but I won't be so I'll bite my tongue on those. ;):D

Thanks Bob! I very much agree with you with you about the saber grind vs. flat from a functional standpoint. A flat grind is a much better slicer and to my eye a nicer looking blade. I do prefer the TC’s clip blade shape and aesthetic to the LJ’s. The last slight drawback I would highlight is the long pull. My preference is for a crescent nail nick or a long pull like on the 2016 TC. The LJ’s feels a bit small to me. It’s still a great knife and looks awesome but for me probably not going to be a heavy user.

Bob, your theory may hold water. My LJ has very little heat treat scale and what is there is very smooth. It also feels very snappy to me almost on par with that Red Soupbone TC Barlow you sold me.

The saber grind isn't really necessary, but it does add a 3 dimensional look to the blade which is very attractive. It reminds me of the blade on my Benchmade mini-Griptillian. Also the blade stock on these is about the same as on other GEC 15's so it isn't a thick saber grind. My Fremont Jack on the other hand has a noticeably thicker blade than corresponding GEC 79's with FFG spear points blades.

Travis, agreed it's a very attractive blade.n No doubt about that.
And to Jake, the long pull is another issue that I wasn't going to speak to, but since you brought it up...........:D My issue with this one is that because of the engraved Northwoods logo, they crowded the long pull in and it ends up too close to the spine of the blade. I have no real preferences of long pull vs nail nicks as long as each is fully functional. Because this one is so close to the spine, it loses some of it's functionality in my opinion. Get rid of the engraved logo and put on a fully functional pull in my opinion.
So to wrap up all that I will openly discuss about Northwoods knives and the Lincoln Jack in particular, it's a very attractive knife. It has much of what I look for in a traditional pocket knife, it will have a spot in my carry rotation and I'm happy to have scored one. Mostly personal preference issues with this run for me, but I think for the most part, everyone is going to be happy with them.

agreed, really bunched up there, maybe they can do it in smaller comic sans :D:p

thats gotta be high up there on my list of not really complaints for northwoods but things they may want to reconsider

All this talk about heavy pull kinda makes me regret not grabbing one! One of the reasons I didn’t pick one up is my Northwoods other than my Madison have light pulls, fine on the Broadway and Michigan with their wharncliffe blades and the way I tend to use them, but my Hawthorne is a clip and while it hasn’t bit me yet, I’ve had the blade start to close on me a couple times when piercing a package or cardboard. I guess it’s because I came to the traditional world after getting used to modern locking knives, and most of what I own have a similar blade profile to a clip or spear but of course lock so the angle I might pierce something with them doesn’t matter. Nowadays I rarely use, (but usually still carry) a modern locking folder, and almost exclusively use a slip-joint so I should just learn to adjust but instead typically use a slippy with a stiff spring.
