October Buck of the Month 2022...301 Stockman

On the one close up photo of the back springs it appears that the springs are straight but the brass frame is warped. I’m wondering if during the pinning process or gluing process that it somehow caused the brass to warp.
I’ve had a stockman knife that when it was at room temp about 70° or in my pocket it was straight both liners and blade but when it was cold the blade would pull off center enough that it rubbed and you could see the blade curved to one side. The liners would warp and gap open from the springs. After it warmed back up it was straight again. Idk but maybe something similar is happening on these.

I too was thinking a tight pin could torque the frame. So it would be possible that a tight knife may have more gaps than a knife with loose pins and blade play.

Brass is rather malleable, and that frame is rather long, thin and skinny.
No rivets probably doesn't matter much. Maybe even could have made it worse....

I'll bet if those frames were stainless the gaps wouldn't be as bad.

I think they were going for a look that exceeded the limits of the material used.

.....My public pondering.
I'm not a knife maker, but I do work with metal. Somethings perform a task better than others.
I try and make the architects dreams come true daily...... They don't always know what they're doing.
I don't think the frame being brass is a problem. Buck has been making brass framed, three blade, three spring, 301s for ages. I have one and if it's held up to the light there are some small gaps. Not really noticeable just to look at, and definitely much smaller than the gaps on the BOTM.

architects.......yeah. they also always seem to forget room for the meps.

Got mine yesterday. Put it to work today. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.
Only very slight play when main is open. No gaps. Slabs are good.

I’m just sending mine in for a refund. I played back and forth way to much when I tried to exchange my poorly finished, $350 212 legacy.
I don't blame ya. this wasn't a great run overall from what I've seen here.

yeah I remember that.....don't remember the ending though.....refunded ya or did ya ever get a good one?

They sent me two replacements that were every bit as bad, and then denied me a refund and made excuses about high turnover being the reason for the poor fit and finish.

I ended up selling it on the exchange for a about a $50 loss.

that's no good there. i remember an exchange and replacement wasnt any better. didn't realize ya had to take a loss. they should have refunded ya. sorry that happened to ya.

You would think they could just email it.

That’s what they said they were going to do. I sent them another email late last night/early this morning, and still nothing.

Why continue to buy Buck knives if you are consistently dissatisfied and Buck says the problem is not their product or service?

Out of the 100+ Buck knives I’ve owned, I’ve only ever had a problem with three to the point they needed to be re-worked. One was fixed beautifully by the warranty department. One couldn’t be fixed and was denied a refund because it was purchased through the BCCI program. And now this one, which I’m sure Buck will take care of and accept a return…. They’re just taking their time about it.

I can enjoy Buck knives will still holding them to the standards I know they’re capable of.

I don’t remember this practice? Is this a new thing? Why would it matter if it was a BCCI program knife?
bcci discount program....maybe its a no refund policy tied to it...I dont know I'm making that up, but think its due to the discount program rules of some sort......

Fixall, I am also interested in the reason for the denial. Was the denied knife purchased from BCCI at a discount ? (based on the retail price for the same knife purchased directly from Buck).

I'm curious to know so I am aware for possible future purchases from BCCI. If there is no Buck Guarantee for a discounted purchase from BCCI, I will have to take that into consideration.

Thank you
