October Buck of the Month 2022...301 Stockman

I've been busy and away the last few days and just saw this this morning. At first I was upset but then a stockman customarily has three blades. The 301 customarily comes with three blades. So I'm not exactly sure what this is other than a knife. It looks great! To bad it didn't have three blades.

Mine was very well done except for this large gap between liner and spring

Mine came a coupe of days ago. I love it! Super sharp, and the brass and micarta are a great combo. It took about half a minute of flushing out before I realized this was one of the cleanest knives I've ever gotten from Buck. Gappy, though. Definitely some gaps in the liners, but nothing that I would have noticed before finding bladeforums.

I have a bit of a weakness for long-pull 301's. The new one is ready for work.

Mine came in today. I want to love it, but honestly I'm pretty underwhelmed. I know some of you are ok with the gaps in the back spring, but on a $130 knife, I personally expect more. These are the worst gaps I've ever seen on any knife that I've owned. The grind lead-off is uneven on both blades (but the primary bevel is solid), the Micarta is poorly finished with different thicknesses, and the Micarta has voids.

Other side isn't much better.

Mine is expected on Thursday. Now you have me worried.

The BOTM fit & finish has been inconsistent (18 BOTM knives in the collection). The quality control in my experience is lacking on the BOTM knives.

EDIT: now 19 BOTM. Unfortunately, # 19 also struggles with the F&F

That's not very impressive. Mine's supposed to be here Friday or Saturday. It's a shame that one has to say, "I hope I get lucky" when ordering what is supposed to be a premium knife from Buck ☹️

Can the gap be fixed by Buck if sent back ? Not understanding how the fix would be accomplished, it seems like it would be difficult to do ?

Fixall, those are some incredible gaps. It's hard to think that someone gave that knife the once over, and thought, "Yep, that'll do." I'm ok with some gaps but that's nearly a flow through design like on a Benchmade.

I also noticed that you have rounded bolsters. Mine are much more square. The squarest square of any square bolsters I have. It was one of the first things I noticed when I pulled it out of the box. I thought it was a design choice, but now I wonder if it was just a different person at the grinder that day.

Its a real shame that these issues exist.. Seems the last 301 BOTM had some issues also..
If a knife is a spot lighted knife it should be perfect to me!?!?
Heres hoping that BUCK stands behind this and they are made 100%!!!

I just got mine. No blade play. There are gaps as shown above, but.
Honestly if they hadn't been pointed out I probably would not have noticed, the frame and springs look pretty straight. Anyhow I wish it was perfect but I am happy as is.
None of my Bucks (this is my 4th, I am not in a league with most you folks) is absolutely perfect cosmetically, they aren't $400 knives either tho.

Its here.

It has gaps.

The grind on the clip was done by that drunk guy friday.gif

There is blade rub. On a two spring, two blade knife  How does that happen? The sheep looks krinked.

Compared to the 2018 Forum knife

The walk is ok, and it is suitably snappy. The sheepsfoot is tight. The clip has the tiniest bit of play. The handles are well fitted and I like the texture, which is slightly rough and not polished. It's a very handsome knife. It is a serviceable pocket knife. If it was$60-$70 it would be fine. At GEC prices it needs GEC F&F The last $35 Case I bought has better fit and finish. Shoot, the 302 I used to open the box has better fit and finish. I have half dozen or so BOTM and all the others were basically perfect.

I recently purchased a 250 Saunter and ultimately returned it because it didn't live up to Buck's hype or pricing structure. Given that I have way more knives than a normal person 🤪 I think I'm going to pass on future Buck knives unless they're cheap or they make something I really would like to have. A 303 with a punch in place of the spey comes to mind...hint, hint.

Overall, I like the knife, but would not buy it again. Way overpriced for the quality. I hope Buck's heat treatment hasn't suffered a similar decline.

Brass is rather malleable, and that frame is rather long, thin and skinny.
No rivets probably doesn't matter much. Maybe even could have made it worse....

I'll bet if those frames were stainless the gaps wouldn't be as bad.

I think they were going for a look that exceeded the limits of the material used.

.....My public pondering.
I'm not a knife maker, but I do work with metal. Somethings perform a task better than others.
I try and make the architects dreams come true daily...... They don't always know what they're doing.

Knife in hand. I love it as long as I don't touch it.

Gap - very slight. Not enough to bother me. One spot only at the sheepfoot end.

Did I mention I love the way it looks ?

The clip blade - easily moves side to side when open. Weak close.

The sheepfoot - solid, no movement. Snappy close.

The grinds - that drunk may be bad at his/her job - but they do a lot of work. So sloppy.

At this price - unacceptable !
