I called Spec-Ops about my sheaths arriving as foliage (belch!) instead of OD(Angels singing). Apparently OD was unavailable so they substituted foliage cause it was as close as they had on hand. She did tell me a guy in the office says Krylon will do wonders in this area. So I'll be doing that soon. Also did the insert mod for my 10's thumb ramp using Guyon's tutorial. Didn't have any boiling water at work, but our water "cooler" as a hot water setting that worked just as well.

I thought Spec-Ops discontinued OD a while back. Last year, I had a time finding a couple of old-stock OD short Combat Masters.

Maybe, but the way she told me was that they were out of that particular color. I know OD had to be an option for color still cause there's no way Id have picked foliage(Army grey). Excellent customer service though, seriously.

finally scored a replacement for my Ritter Mk II perseverance on another forum today.

Embrace the foliage..........The Army isnt as bad as you think.

Me and the boy are taking a man trip today. On our way to Bham we will be stopping off at Tandy leather and Bass Pro in Montgomery. Pumped. I will soon be attempting my first knife out of either a file or a lawn mower blade, too!

Tomorrow will be a good day for me. Gonna be finished with work an hour earlier than usual (1415 instead of 1515 - it's a German tradition) then go to an archery shop with a friend (who is friends with the store owner, discounts rule :D) to get my Samick SHT recurve, then when I get home my Martin Swinkels kydex and Victorinox SwissTool will be waiting for me here. Yay!

Here's the bow...

Trade, that's awesome. My mom made the same recipe last week after I spent the day chainsawing at her place. But she forgot the chx stock... complicated things. I bet yours is awesome. :-)

Jarod, ANNEAL the steel first if you start with a mower blade or file! ANNEAL!!! Dear Dog, PLEASE ANNEAL. This is the disembodied voice of experience talking.... And good luck, you'll have a blast.

So I was trying to both test and demonstrate how sharp I'd managed to get this high-ground A2 knife...

And this wasn't quite cutting it, so to speak...

So I whittled a hair! (and then manged to convince my cellephone cam to focus on it!).

That's it for the day, I'm going back to bed.

{very pleased} :D

How do I go about that at home? Just build a nice sized fire and toss it in? Let it cool with the embers dying?

That will almost certainly work.
It may also heat it somewhat unevenly and you may get some warpage, but don't let that deter you completely.
You can also do it in a fire/woodstove and pull it out and stick it in a metal can full of fireplace/stove ash for 12-24hrs. If you can get it evenly orange in the fire and then cool it evenly in an ash can/pile, I think you'll get less warpage.

I don't know about mower blades (googley), but files are usually W1 or W2, which are water-hardening steels. They must be cooled rapidly (usually in brine, not straight water) to be hardened again. Cooling slowly prevents the formation of the harder version of the crystal structure. Even if you just throw the blade in the kitchen oven on the cleaning cycle (clean the steel first, or you may never be forgiven) you'll make it much softer, but that will be more of a strong temper than annealing. Remember that files are some of the hardest tools out there because they're intended to cut OTHER tools.

Charcoal and a hair dryer will get hot enough to anneal it. The slower you can cool it, the softer it will get. Heat it to non-magnetic.
